That reminds me of my first daily driver OC build, intel E2160 at 3Ghz. The ram was 667mhz 2gb generic dell + 800mhz 2gb low profile kingston that I got for 5$ plus 0.5g of weed from a guy who said he found it on a random park bench. It ran in dual channel 1066mhz for at least 5 years and I even sold it in the end. Amazing RAM that was.

I recently upgraded my skylake i5 to a ryzen 5800x and wanted to keep the green pcb ram ( 2400MHz CL17 crucial) if it could overclock. Surprising enough, it OCs to 3200MHz CL17 just fine at 1.4 V. Aida64 memory latency is at 64-65ns, which is pretty decent. Just goes on to show how easy it is to OC memory these days and you don't need 100$ kits if you can't afford it.

Hey Buildzoid, is going above 1.5V on DDR4 potentially dangerous for the RAM dies or memory controller or does it only go indirectly harmful for RAM dies because of increased amount of heat? I've tried and I've tried and I can't see unequivocal answer. It always is 1.45V with an argument "just because".

Hey Buildzoid, quick question on Command Rate. I have a Maximus X Hero with an 8700K, was wondering what the Command Rate 1:N meant? There's 1N, 2N, and 1:N. I'm guessing 1N and 2N are same as 1T and 2T, but what's 1:N? Sorry, I don't memory OC beyond XMP, but I want to get into it. I also have a hell of a time getting my kit (G-Skill 3600MHz 16-16-16-36) to run with 1N, okay, so I can't get it to work at all, though from what I've read it doesn't seem to make too much of a difference (besides latency)? Or do I have that wrong? But I'm getting off the subject, just wondering what the 1:N thing meant :P Thanks Buildzoid, love your videos, always learn tons more from you than anyone else! Edit: Also, how on earth does a noob like me, get anywhere near your level when it comes to understanding how to set all those sub timings? I don't even know where to begin :P

I had a question about this topic before watching this video, I have 2x8GB Kingston Hyper X Fury DDR4 2400mhz Ram sticks installed in my build i7 9700k, Gigabyte Aorus Z390 Master. I switched on XMP and Overclocked the rams to about 2800mhz I did not touch the voltage and latencies as I'm not familiar with those. I know they don't make a lot of difference on Intel Platform but are they safe? Like its running on 1.2V at 2800mhz. Is it fine? I'm asking this question because on Kingstons Site it says it's okay to Overclock them.

But how is the memory speed functionally? you could have made a AIDA64 RAM test to see the actual transfer rate and see how actually overclocked it is. In my Country Bolivia I have yet to see a MoBo that doesn't specifically points out that it needs dual-ranked RAM, single rank is faster, so that's a factor

do you remember the memory voltage inserter thing you could get i the old days. You insert it into a mem slot and power it, the Vmem was then produced by the thing and inserted backwards into the motherboard and out to the other mem sticks.

You’re super vague... Hynix will die before Samsung, and Elpeda Hyper can handle even more. It also varies per binning of the kit. You probably didn’t know that the brand and manufacturing process is important, and that it’s just like running AMD/Intel at different voltages, but now you know. Also Intel is destroying a lot of men controllers at low voltage, and first gen Ryzen shouldn’t be blasting SOC or mem voltage to the moon either, even if it was perfectly fine for the RAM kit (so it may be worse on your CPU, so knowing even the exact kit of RAM wouldn’t be enough info, it even varies per CPU binning, and nobody will know when it fails/degrades, because every single piece of silicon will behave different. I would recommend not exceeding your factory kit limits (honestly, I wouldn’t run some of the high voltage rated kits at XMP, because 1.45 may destroy your CPU running XMP...). If you run it within spec, you’ll at least have a warranty on your ram (you won’t on the cpu above 1.2v, so don’t exceed that even if your running a million dollar server....). Also if you run liquid nitrogen, you can safely go higher voltage.

I see ridiculous voltages here, does he run them like that 24/7? Does it require extra airflow or is a CPU fan enough? Edit: Ok, finally finished the video, so he does stop at 1.5V for daily usage. I heard that 1.5V is the most for ddr4 daily usage so I didn't even try pushing anything above it (that and also the ddr4 guide on overclocking Reddit said Micron 4Gbit Rev.A will not go above 3000, I tried it once and didn't want to loosen the timings so I trusted them, maybe someone could prove me wrong) and got my timings down instead. Got my Corsair LPX Vengeance 2400 14-16-16-31 2T to 3000 13-17-17-36 1T at 1.5V and auto VCCIO and SA (they are 1.32 and 1.24 but can probably set them lower manually), haven't tested stability long term but no problems in Time Spy or Aida 64 for a few minutes. To be honest loosening the timings down from C16 to C13 had barely any effect in Time Spy, better some places, worse some place else, margin of error type stuff. I did see latency reductions and bandwidth increases in Aida64 bench, but that's about it. I was really hoping to see some noticeable improvement in minimum FPS, that was the point. It seems from my results that bumping the cache from stock 3.9 to 4.5 had more of an effect than overclocking memory - around 1 fps from 11 to 12, that's a 9% improvement.
