volvo made some good luxury trims for some of their models throughout the 2000s, but during the 80s and 90s volvo was associated with utilitarian safe and sensible cars. these days they're targeting the rich middle aged wife demographic, which is something most brands are doing with their 'luxury suv' offerings as well. manufacturers figured out that it's relatively easy to ramp up the profit margins in this target group without getting too much objection.

It's kind of subjective to him, but then also to the market. The quality and experience is near a Rolls, but the engine isn't as reliable. Nor does anyone think "Volvo" for luxury like they do Rolls Royce. Popularity shouldn't really be a factor in the scoring, but it is, because popularity affects the resale value. So if it were "initial" value it'd be higher.

+Doug DeMuro, I personally own a "fully loaded" 2016 XC90 Inscription. So, while I've seen an Excellence model, I cannot speak for that trim level. However, there a few corrections to point out. First, in "Rough Road" mode, the transmission limits you to a certain speed. But, if you're looking for a fast 0 to 60 speed test, then you should've chose the "Dynamic" drive setting. And the styling? Sweden is primarily known for two vehicle manufacturers; Volvo and Saab. I believe that Ikea furniture (Or, maybe just the styling.) is from there as well. However; if you're looking for something to point out, then why not the "Since 1959" that's stamped into every seatbelt latch? After all; Volvo did design the three-point safety latch seatbelt system. But Seriously???Can we really not get ONE mention of safety, or the safety features, that Volvo includes as STANDARD on all Volvo's?BLIS with Cross Traffic Alert - Lets you know when it's ok to change lanes. Warns if another vehicle is crossing your path.Adaptive Cruise Control - Maintains distance between you & the vehicle ahead of you. Lane Keeping Aid - Alerts driver if you drift out of your lane.Road Sign Information - Reads speed limit & school zone signs, and reminds you of your speed.Things you did not review:Any of the safety features; standard or add-ons.Head-up Display4-corner Air Suspension

I'm actually picking up a S90 T6 Inscription, and yes, you can put it in Dynamic, but keeping the transmission as automatic rather than using the gear shifter to manually go through the gears it does take a little more time than I care for the transmission to understand what I'm asking of it. It IS designed to be every day, rather than a sports sedan. *However*, what they have available now is a 'Polestar' tune, which is just a TCU (transmission control unit) and ECU tune that gives a little more power (not much, honestly), but it alters the shift patterns on the transmission which helps it fully utilize the twin-charging (and hybrid, if so equipped) for I think like $1500 or a little less. I'll probably have that done next year on my S90. It may also alter the AWD from being primarily FWD bias to RWD/Neutral, but I'm not 100% positive on that aspect. I also find the handling to be quite fine when it's rolling on 21's or 22's (which my tester had 21's). I think 22's would be too harsh and the suspension on my current vehicle is pretty aggressive for regular driving. To compare, I test drove an E53 and that felt like really responsive clouds compared to my current car, as did the F-Sport GS350 in sport and the Ghibli SQ4 in sport.

@@erikbuiten14 Yes, the actual P* models do have physical differences, but for the S90 T6 Inscription that I picked up last week, you can get the software itself flashed where it's been 'optimized' by Polestar. It's kind of annoying, because I feel like the P* flash should've been how the S90 came factory from the dealership. But, I know it came out a year or so after the S90 release and that platform required EXTENSIVE software updates to get everything working well, as mine does now. I know that they will release a proper Polestar built vehicle, but I think that's in 2020, isn't it?

Cheap front wheel-based platform, nothing more than poor 4-cylinder engines and doesn't have any full-size limo as competitor for S-class or BMW 7. Not even some nice roadster or coupe. However, it can still be regarded a high end brand for hipsters and metrosexuals who only care about large touch screen and connectivity.

The XC 90 is made in Daqing, Heilongjiang China and if that's not bad enough they're owned by Geely the otherwise most corrupt Chinese auto manufacturer, not to mention the producers of the World's most unsafe car. You missed one of the most important features: ”Low key”. One would buy a Excellence for the low key instead of a bragging Mercedes, Maybach, or other easily visible luxury cars. The low key factor is what I mostly like this car for. Why? You are left alone. 👍 Value? Priceless!!

Audi? The r8 cost less than that. Don't bring a good German series to a bad name, it's no where near BMW or Mercedes. A SQ5, which I would rather over this, is priced at 80k and would be a way better choice. Don't even talk trash on the engine either, yes they had bad times in the past but everything up from 2009 has been god like. I hate when people BMW and Audi in the same category. Once you drive off the lot with a Audi you don't feel like you just wasted a bunch of money.

Orrefors was handmade Swedish crystal (now it's defunct and a part of Kosta-Boda glassworks). The latest luxury line was Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld (a rather well known fashion designer). A champagne flute is about $35 - 150 except for the special series that are much more expensive > $ 2000. BTW it's not a seal - it's a black grouse. The name Orrefors just means grouse rapids. The sign Volvo Sweden means that it made in Gothenburg in Sweden - not in a plant in China, Malaysia, Thailand, Belgium or Ridgesville in the USA. The Excellence model is a special luxury model limited edition. You can get the 7-seater with most of the "normal luxury" for about $ 85 000 in Sweden. More practical, better value. No sports car - it's a SUV.

Doug, I loved your astonishment on 'Vlaams'. This is the Belgian version of Dutch (not a separate language, it's an accent difference). The reason that it's there, is probably because Volvo has a huge factory in Ghent in the middle of Vlaanderen, where this car is made. If you don't know Ghent, it's where the treaty of Ghent has been signed, starting the independence of your USA.
