Please research Stella Liebeck, she is much maligned. She was seriously injured and only wanted compensation for her medical bills. She had 3rd degree burns on her thighs and genitals and had to have skin grafts. At the time McDonald's kept their coffee only 2 degrees lower than the boiling point. Her medical bills were in the 10's of thousands of dollars and they only offered to settle for a few hundred. Contrary to popular belief she was not driving, she was a passenger and the car was not moving. She was trying to remove the lid to add sugar and when she did the cup spilled, when her son asked for help from the workers they would not give them anything for burns and ridiculed her. She only asked for her medical bills, legal fees and that the lower the temp on their coffee, the JURY decided to levy punitive damages for the equivalent of 2 days of coffee sales. After winning, Stella let them off the hook and actually accepted less money. And by the way, McDonald's totally knew their coffee was way too hot as they had received hundreds of complaints of severe burns from their coffee.

Ok so the truth of the hot coffee lawsuit by McDonald’s was that it was an old lady, sitting in her passenger seat while her son was in the drivers seat. It was in the parking lot and she accidentally spilled it. She even admitted it was her fault but the coffee was dangerously hot, above the temperature that it should have been served. She suffered third degree burns! They only offered her a couple hundred for her injuries which costed way more. She didn’t even want to sue them until they refused to pay it. She won, and McDonald’s knew they were serving the coffee too hot and that atleast a hundred other people reported being burned by Their coffee! But McDonald’s used the media to make it sound like she was driving, a middle aged women, and that the coffee wasn’t burning!

+joshua marti (pandajam7) she wasn't driving, that's a lie. Also the coffee was several times hotter than Mc Donald's instructs there employees to make it, in addition to that there were several people (a few dozen) who complained before about how much hotter it was than it should have been. So it was a legitimate lawsuit. You need to read about things before you go and blabber about it.

COFFEE SHOULD NOT BE HOT ENOUGH TO CAUSE 3RD DEGREE BURNS... EVER!

  • @GoddessFourWinds

+Kaegan McDonald McDonald's had had several complaints already. And coffee shouldn't be hot enough to give you 3rd degree burns. Google the images. No coffee from a fast food restaurant should be that hot. I guess if it had burned a dog, you'd be more concerned.

I don't care, it's not rocket science to realize that coffee is HOT, and if hers was hotter than good for her, doesn't everyone want hot coffee? Should we start giving people room temperature coffee so they don't burn themselves or complain that there coffee is too hot, let's just put a ban on coffee and only allow iced coffee so nobody gets hurt, or will the coffee be too cold that they go into hypothermia.

  • @justinbolbach2710
    @justinbolbach27107 жыл бұрын

The McDonalds coffee being too hot wasn't an exaggeration the lady that spilled it on her lap suffered horrendous trauma and when I heard about it I thought to myself "of course coffees hot and if one spills it on themselves they will get hurt" but after seeing the photos of the injuries to the lady hurt by it I thought well this is messed up and there's no reason for coffee to be so hot it burns someone that badly and the lady who bought it may have been jittery from not having her delicious heated bean juice or could have had Parkinsons or some other ailment to cause her to spill it so I say to the people who think "well coffee is going to be hot you should have known" look the pics up and tell me coffee needs to be as hot as napalm! Im just glad that it wasn't spilled accidentally on a clumsy kid that do routinely knock things over.

Ellie Harper - Her medical bills , after insurance, were in the neighborhood of $10,000-$11,000. That's all she wanted. Instead, she was offered $800. All she wanted was her medical bills paid for and for them to fix the problem and reduce the temperature of the coffee. Even when they went to court, she only asked for just barely enough money to cover her bills and make a point to the chain. It was the jury who said she should get the massive sums of money, as a punitive measure to hurt the company enough in their pocketbooks in hopes that the lesson would stick.

she was an older woman in an old car with no cup holder, so she used her legs to hold it the cup broke and burned basically her entire thigh area and her buttocks so bad, that the several surgeries she had to go through nearly claimed her life. the coffee that that McDonald's was selling was in temperatures exceeding 400℉. there is a documentary on Netflix in excruciating detail about the whole thing. the worst part is the family wasn't suing for some crazy amount, they just couldn't afford the medical bills and wanted McDonald's to pay them. McDonald's then started producing negative press against the women so as to make them the good guy in this.

  • @DameonStarflame

+MrFic It's not stupid. She was a 70-year old woman who was in a parked car and the coffee spilled. It was so hot she had third degree burns within seconds. If being older wasn't enough (your skin gets thinner as you get older in some cases), her genitals were fused together and they had to have major surgery to repair the damage. I see red every time I see that one mentioned because the media turned it into a laughing stock with a vague "oh she spilled coffee and sued" line, when in reality she was horrifically hurt by it. The only reason she sued was because she wanted McDonalds to pay her medical bills and they refused, so she was forced to take legal action. And honestly? As a fellow Canadian who lives not two hours away from Toronto? I'm actually very disappointed in Matt for bringing that one up. At least he didn't actually include it in the video.

The McDonald's coffee lawsuit is actually much more complicated then initially posed. The woman was in her eighties and the car was parked at the time of the spill. She wasn't driving either and was just trying to put milk and sugar in her coffee. The spill happened when she tried to remove the lid, and the coffee - which was more than 200 degree Fahrenheit - gave her third degree burns over most of her thighs and genitals. She requires skin grafts and wasn't the first to be harmed by McDonald's ridiculously hot coffee, just the first to file a lawsuit. McDonald's has since slandered this poor woman even though she was clearly the victim.

She sued them because she was an older woman with severe burns, and because of her age it took a lot of money to recover from, regardless it was found the coffee was beyond boiling hot, she had a real claim and she went a long way to win. It's progress against big companies that pay the press to infantilise customers who try to mess with them, to turn the public against them, and it clearly worked because you think the old woman is an idiot for it. Don't be an idiot.

If people got third degree burns when it spilled on them, what would it do to your tongue if you tried to drink it right away? You couldn't, so what is the point in keeping it that hot?

For example, the elderly lady that requested McDonald's to pay her hospital bills after receiving 3rd degree burns from a cup of coffee; before learning the details of this case I thought it was ridiculous as well. However, if you look into the details of that case in particular, you would likely agree that she does not deserve mockery for her plight. This prejudice opening prevented me from watching anymore Santorum videos for the night.

McDonald's ran a smear campaign against her. Turns out her thighs received 3rd degree burns, and she only asked her medical bills be covered. However not only did they give her barely anything, but she waited weeks to hear back. During the lawsuit McDonalds hired protesters to protest against "frivolous law suits" even though the coffee was kept at an incredibly ridiculous level. This was done so people would be wary about filing lawsuits against companies, even if there was a valid reason. Example: 3rd degree burns from a spilt product: worth a lawsuit. got fat from eating nothing but crap: not worth a law suit

The lady who sued McDonalds for spliing coffee on herself suffered 3rd degree burns. It was found that the manager at the McDonalds she went too had the coffee machines heat turned up. So that customers who dinned in wouldn't be able to get a refill on there coffee, because by the time it was cool enough to drink they would have finished there meal and would be leaving the store.

That Macdonald was sued thing. You haven't heard the real story: She ordered a cafe from Macdonald, and she was sitting on her daughter. And so the car went driving, and the car hit a bump and she spilled the cafe over herself (she was a passenger) and since the cafe at Macdonald's is actually really hot, she was so burned that she had to go to the hospital, and after serval surgeries she survived (she could actually died). And for the cost of the surgeries she called Macdonald and ask them kindly to pay for her surgery, but they refused. And after serval attempts she had to sue them to pay the bills. Many other people had also been critical burned because of this. Don't judge her!

Just a heads up. The McDonalds case was actually about the woman asking for help to pay her hospital bill of 20,000 dollars after she had received third degree burns by spilling coffee in the passenger's seat of a parked car. Of the 20,000 dollars, McDonalds was truly generous offering a whole $800 for the hospital fees. If you are wondering how the fees at a hospital could be so high, the woman needed skin graphs and surgery after the coffee spill. Funny enough, over 700 people had complained about the temperature of the coffee being too hot and could cause burns within seconds. Poor McDonalds ended up losing the case due to the jury faulting them for not caring about their customers, but being super classy and honest went out of their way to destroy the reputation of a 79 year old woman so nobody else who had been harmed would feel the need to sue. Helps prevent companies from being held responsible for unsafe conditions if people think it is a scam.

The woman who sued McDonald's suffered third-degree burns and ended up dying her family sued. This predicament tunnels had been cited multiple times for the coffee being well over the acceptable range. You should never get third-degree burns from something in a cup and a restaurant attend to you through a window. This McDonnells had a malfunctioning coffee pot which was eating a coffee to almost 100° over the allowable and although they have been told they refused to fix it. The family sued for the medical bills after the woman died due to the 3rd° burns. Before you get snarky about something you should understand it and maybe you should watch the documentary about it.

+William Bradey (Test) before you start talk you should maybe go to medical school. She died due to complications and the autopsy stated that the repeated surgeries and repeated infections along with her age had a direct correlation and was the causative action for her multi organ failure and general decline. So since the coroner ruled her death due to complications from the third degree burns then I was right. A death does not need to be immediate to be related. Christopher Reeves death was caused by his fall from the horse since he died from an infection that he would not have gotten had he not been a quad. See how that works?

Heidi Williams You claimed she died and her family are the ones who sued. "The woman who sued McDonald's suffered third-degree burns and ended up dying her family sued." I would also like you to link me with the autopsy report you claim to have read because I can't find it. There is no mention whatsoever of any complications, infections, or multiple organ failure involving this case anywhere online. So unless you can back up your claims with the autopsy report, I, and others, are just going to have to assume you're talking out of your ass.

Hey Matthew, you make really high quality content. I really enjoy it. I just want to say the woman that sued for the hot coffee isn't as ridiculous as it seems. The coffee was at a ridiculously high temperature, McDonald's actually had to change their process because of that. The lady was also burned horrifically. I still think it was a bad case, but its seriously not just ridiculous. She was seriously hurt and the coffee was just way too hot. At a lesser temperature I don't personally believe she would have sustained the severity of injury that she did.

The spilled coffee from McDonalds lawsuit was not as stupid as it sounds if you know all the facts surrounding the incident. The McDonalds had gotten in trouble several times before by code enforcement for having their coffee at too high of a temperature. The family originally only asked that McDonalds cover her medical bills... they refused, so it went to court. She didn't have a little red burn on her leg, it was so hot it completely melted a large amount of skin away. She had to stay in the hospital for a long time. All they wanted was medical bills covered, due to this being a documented issue with that particular McDonalds constantly serving their coffee at a temperature not allowed by food code enforcement. There is a documentary on it I watched on that lawsuit that changed my mind from thinking it was stupid.

The story about the lady suing McDonalds because the coffee was hot is misrepresented as a frivolous lawsuit. She sued because the coffee was so massively hot as to cause serious harm; bad enough damage to require skin grafts. One expects their coffee to be hot, but not so hot that a spill will put you in the hospital.

That McDonald's Coffee lawsuit is actually worse than you would think. The lady who spilled the coffee was sitting in her parked car, and her 20 yo son was the driver. She was NOT moving, and she spilled the coffee. The coffee was actually ove 200 degrees Fahrenheit and gave her 3rd degrees all over her lower half. She was in the hospital for weeks. The McDonald's corp. actually paid a lot of money to keep that part under wraps.

Before stating that a lawsuit is ridiculous, please do your Research. The McDonalds "ridiculous " lady's lawsuit was only brought because she had 3rd degree burns requiring MANY surgeries, and she suffered horrific pain. She was one of many Hundreds of people who had brought it to McDonalds attention that their coffee was MUCH hotter than it was supposed to be, but McDonald's typically offered people 400. Dollars for their burns and most people didn't think anyone would care. The reason most of us thought it was "ridiculous" was because McDonald's spent a sum of money in a smear campaign against the 70+ year old woman that could have easily paid for all her surgeries and all the other people hurt by their coffee. I'm sure the executive's were told the woman was "ridiculous" also. The reason I did some research on it, was because I had thought it sounded like a frivolous lawsuit, and wanted the facts. I think it's awful to smear a 70 something year old persons name without even knowing the facts of the case. Imagine that maybe 12 people who heard all the facts, and even though McDonald's had their high paid lawyers arguing, found in favor of the lady, maybe knew more than those of us who weren't in the courtroom. I don't mean to sound harsh, but I felt so bad about what I had believed when I found what actually happened, and over 20 years later, people still smearing the poor woman's name, without any knowledge of the actual facts. Also, she tried to talk to the corporation. Suing was a last alternative for her, because she couldn't afford the medical bills that were mounting up because of the horrific burns she suffered. McDonald's could have done a better job, but I still love their 🍔! ;)

Matthew, I'm a huge fan. Please research the McDonalds coffee lawsuit. It was NOT frivolous. The woman had 2nd and 3rd degree burns. McDonalds has been previously been warned about the temp of their coffee and originally the family only wanted the woman's med bills paid.

The lady who dropped McDonald's coffee on her lap suffering third degree burns needed treatment then McDonald wanted to pay less for the treatment making her in a bad situation having not enough money she sued them then McDonald's payed people to lie about what really happened so the company didn't look bad McDonald's sold coffee at high tempatures

The McDonald's coffee one was actually sad, a guy got the coffee for his grandma. The temp of the coffee was over 200° F. That ended up burning her privates, later becoming infected, the doctor said it was some of the worst burns he'd ever seen. All the family want was for McDonald's to pay the medical bills.

I remember the Michael Jordan one being in your 10 dumbest things people sued over video. That was funny. Especially the “I was not in Space Jam” joke you put in.

Disclaimer: The MacDonald coffee was so hot it burnt off skin and required surgery to get it fixed. The coffee was way to hot and she sued for the cost of the surgery.
