    Strider has an inflated ERA because he gets rocked by bad teams who focus on contact hitting but has ridiculous splits against winning teams with high slugging percentages. Zac Gallen is an amazing pitcher... But only at home. He's completely replaceable as a pitcher on the road. The biggest overrated guy you missed on this list was Jazz Chisholm

    Zac Gallen was so bad in the playoffs, as a Dbacks fan it was depressing to watch how bad he was. He definitely didn’t play like an Ace at all. World Series he was better than he was in the rest of the playoffs. NLCS he was so bad im shocked we even won that series even if it took 7 games but the 2 games he pitched he basically played like playoff Clayton Kershaw because in the first couple innings he was giving away hits for free.

    Spencer Strider with a 3.86 ERA but a *league leading* 2.85 Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) means he's 100% NOT overrated. Generally speaking, pitchers with a better FIP perform better over their careers (Randy, Pedro, Clemens, etc.). Cold take, Barry. My wife's boyfriend is disappointed in you.

    spencer strider pick i really disagree with. While yeah he had a high era last year, a lot of his predictive stats (FIP) suggest he was really unlucky with balls in play. He struck out 37% of batters and walked less then 8% of them, and I have full confidence his more traditional numbers will be much better going into this year.

  • @hennyruggs7134

    @hennyruggs7134

    also in case you don't know what FIP is, it's fielding independent pitching, basically only looking at the things a pitcher can control in an at-bat (walks, strikeouts, home runs.) Its typically a lot better at showing and predicting how good a pitcher was that year, and lower fip= more sustainable success usually.

    I don’t think you quite understand “the advanced stats” of baseball. Strider is undoubtably a top 25 player in baseball, he had a high ERA sure but his FIP (better ERA that grades pitchers based on the quality of their pitches) was extremely low, one of the lowest in baseball. I understand the thought process, but I’d recommend looking at some sites like statcast or fangraphs that have stats like fWAR or ISO. They are much better at showing someone who truly overrated or underrated as opposed to counting stats which can be the result of luck. Understanding BABIP is good though, that stat shows how lucky a player is when they hit a ball in play 👍

It’s still early in the year, but I’ve loved what I’ve seen from him so far and he is looking like that potential Cy Young winner we brought him here to be. Burnes as our ace with Bradish and Rodriguez following him is looking like it’s going to be a very good rotation for the season.

    Defensive WAR varies a lot year to year and can mess with evaluation of players, I would probably use like a 5 year average when evaluating. Also when using OPS+ I think you should consider the position more. A guy with an average OPS and a good glove at SS is more valuable than say a 115 OPS+ at 1B because there’s less of them and there are way more premium hitting options at 1B than SS.

  • @colindahnoodle4397
    @colindahnoodle43972 ай бұрын

    I think Barry fails to realize the importance of the Shortstop position in baseball, winning a gold glove doesn’t mean much in 6 (maybe 7 counting pitcher) positions on the field, but it is absolutely a huge deal for Shortstop and Second Base. That’s why their fielding WAR is so high

    A very interesting list, pretty bold at times but honestly I think most of your arguments are pretty understandable. Some of my takeaways are that I don't think many have actually considered Trout the "best player in the world" in a couple years, either because of the injuries or the fact that Ohtani exists, or both. And as far as Glasnow goes, I don't think the Rays "gave up" on Glasnow, because they clearly have a need for a starting pitcher. The Rays are excellent at identifying when players are at their peak and moving on from them when their arrow isn't going to go up. It's the ol' buy low and sell high. Now, I do think he may be overrated because I never saw that dude getting press when he was with the Rays but all of a sudden people are extremely high on him, and as far as I can tell, it's just because he's on the Dodgers. He was always a good pitcher, probably isn't going to get any better, but now that he's a Dodger he's a Cy Young favorite? Doesn't seem right to me.

  • @toilet_cleaner_man
    @toilet_cleaner_man2 ай бұрын

    Alright, after watching this video, I've decided to give my response to each of your picked players, and give my opinions on them. Andres Gimenez: I'll admit, the sudden fall that Gimenez experienced last year was jarring, but it wasn't unexpected. While that 98 OPS+ sticks out like a sore thumb, he supplemented (no offense to Lebron James) that rather pedestrian bat with some excellent baserunning and premier defense at second base, a position that generally lacks good hitters. Gimenez still provided positively to the team despite the poor showing at the plate, and is only 25, that baserunning and range at second isn't going anywhere, and as he gets to his physical peak his hitting (atleast his power) could see an increase as well. Properly Rated Blake Snell: I agree, I do not see Blake hitting those same numbers (no offense to Ji-Hwan Bae) he did in either of his Cy Young years, but for a pitcher like him we need a bit of a deeper dive to see where he might end up. Blake's huge issue is a massive walk problem (no offense to Stephen Hawking, RIP), with him leading MLB in free passes (no offense to John Stockton) last year and having an above average walk rate for most of his career. However, if we look deeper, we see that he otherwise has been phenomenal at preventing hits (career 7 H/9 through 900-ish IPs, very good), and preventing homers (career 0.9 HR/9, once again quite good). Overall, his FIP suggests he's due for regression, but not massive regression, and assuming he can keep his walk-rate manageable, he could be quite good in San Fran. Moderately Overrated Jordan Montgomery: To me, Monty is the inverse of Snell, he eats innings for breakfast, gives up more hits but barely walks guys, and overall is a more consistently good pitcher while Snell has underwhelmed and overshot his underlying by quite alot in his career. Outside of one legit year where he only pitched 4 innings and 2020 where the sample is 44 innings, he has held an ERA+ of over 100 in all of his seasons. Monty has a pitcher's body of work, and can easily continue to chug right along in Arizona as the slightly above average pitcher he is. Slightly Overrated Dansby Swanson: As a psychopathic Brewers fan, I have no reason to sing Swanson's praises, but if we are being rational individuals, he a legitimately good Short Stop. While the .244 average and 99 OPS+ looks poor, this is once again a case where a player can provide value beyond their surface-level stats. Swanson is a good defensive short-stop, the position second only to catcher in terms of defensive value, and he also hits a healthy amount of round-trippers to supplement that gilded glove, with 27-25-22 over the past 3 seasons. While he is entering his 30s now, he still handles a large load (no offense to Monica Lewinsky) and provides great value (you can't get 4.8 bWAR at short for $14m anymore from a free agent eligible player). Properly Rated Mike Trout: If he gets injured, he'll still be Mike Trout, he hasn't had a sub-100 OPS+ since the first Obama Administration, if he doesn't get injured, he's Mike Trout with a proper workload, though his WAR may take a hit if the Angels decide to move him away from everyday Center Field play, which is likely due to his injury history. Slightly Underrated Evan Carter: I do agree, I think he might not live up to the expectations he'll have from fans after the '23 postseason, but he is the consensus ROTY pick for '24 and still has amazing potential, but Barry got this one pretty much right. Moderately Overrated to Overrated Spencer Strider: The Quad-Stash Ball Thrower worries me, but not in the same way he worries or concerns Barry, I think if anything hurts Strider in the future, it's him getting hurt. Strider lives off of his devastating fastball and slider, producing some genuinely sickening underlying stats (20-5, 3.86ERA, *2.85FIP* , 281Ks, 1.093WHIP, 7H/9, 1.1HR/9, 2.8BB/9, and 13.5 fucking K/9 in 2023). He under performed his FIP by almost a full run and struck out 281 batters and came 4th in Cy Young voting. However, his high fastball usage and velocity is what troubles me, with UCL reconstruction surgery being a practical right of passage for modern pitchers, a guy throwing constant gas like Strider at his age definitely puts the fear of Tommy John in you, and could be his undoing if he is dealt a forearm strain of significance. Properly Rated Corbin Burnes: _I'm starting to get tired and my arm hurts from typing for this long so I'm gonna pick up the pace and stop rambling as much._ Burnes is a curious case for me, he is starting to show last success in the peripherals (3.81 FIP in '23), and had a sizeable Walk rate spike in '23, but I do believe he will still be alright in Baltimore. A weaker up-the-middle defense might hurt him in the long term and cause his high hits per 9IP to come back again, but he's built to be effective, and is only 29. Might not be worth that money and hype however, so he'll be: Overrated Tyler Glasnow: The funny Cillian Murphy look-alike has injury issues, but remains effective as an overpowering strikeout pitcher with some pretty decent control, if he gets injured again, it'll be bad, but not unexpected. Dodgers get whatever they pay for. Slightly Overrated Kyle Schwarber: He hits piss missiles and strikes out 30% of the time while walking 20% of the time. He hits like dogwater average-wise because he's so three-true-outcomes oriented, where 2 of the components (walks and strikeouts) reduce average. He had a .343 OBP last year, which is firmly above average and does his damage as well. Might be the weirdest lead-off man ever, but he does his job, you can't really get mad a 47HRs even if his surface-level average is below the mendoza line. Properly Rated comment if you disagree, I probably won't respond but will read them and am curious to see how wrong I am with my analysis according to the comment section.

    Yea Ima be real I fw him doing baseball now but to call some of these players overrated and the reasoning he gave was fuckin ridiculous. Calling Trout overrated in any capacity should get your youtube channel banned and the weird insistence on grossly undervaluing defense blows my mind. average to slightly below average offense plus golden glove defense is a player almost every team would kill for so this idea that it doesn't provide the same in terms of winning is insanity. Also buddy mentioned the fact that the Phillies are like a middle school team record-wise when Schwarber hits anywhere but leadoff and that's not even considering the fact that mans has a +.3 OBP with 47 fuckin homeruns. Overrated is CRAZY. Idek how to address calling one of if not the best pitcher in baseball overrated. I actually have no idea how someone could watch him play, look at his stats, and say yea, overrated for sure. all in all i'm beginning to suspect he actually knows jack shit about sports and we all may be here for the shout outs and jokes above anything else.

    That all sounds fair to say. I have a few questions for you if you have a minute: 1. Is Bryce Harper overrated, underrated or properly rated? He’s the player I see labeled overrated the most often the past several years. 2. Any Mariners players you think are particularly misrated either way? (That’s my team and I’m curious) And 3. What do you think of your team going into this year? (I don’t know what I’d say about Milwaukee, but for my Mariners I could see a lower playoff team if things go well, and around .500 if things go poorly?)

    @fortynights1513 I'm not the OP, but as a Braves fan who has seen Harper his entire career in Washington and Philly, Bryce USED to be slightly overrated, but is now properly rated. His MVP season with the best OPS since Barry was clearly an outlier, but since he was literally a teenager people touted him as the next Bonds. He's fallen more in line with a modern day Yazstremski, which is still an amazing comparison. You don't want to make him angry or he'll tear you up (hello again 2023 NLDS), but he's a solid .900 OPS outfielder, now first baseman. As for Mariners, Luis Castillo is very underrated in my opinion. He's a legit ace that will give you 160-200 IP with a good ERA and FIP. He'll never be Maddux, Pedro, or Koufax level, but at least 25 teams would kill for a #1 like Castillo right now. Again, as a Braves fan, I expect us to win 105 games and get swept in the NLDS. lmao

    @@fortynights1513 Bryce is somewhat underrated now. He used to get shit-tons of hype, but after his slow start in Philly the slander he got went way far out of hand, and he proved he was still elite with 2021. He's not Trout, he never was, but he's better than he was given credit for because he was one of the first to get a 300m+ dollar contract (now injured players get 700m, lol) As far as Mariners, the issue is they are quite talented, but quite unproven. Guys like Kriby, Miller, Woo, etc have all been in the league for a short amount of time, and they still have to show a certain amount of consistent aptitude to prove their pedigree. However, that pedigree is still there for a reason, and the Mariners on the whole could be set for a while with that rotation, and are offensively challenged but capable of playing better than they did last year. At the end of the day, they are the Mariners, so I will not believe the hype until they show they can rise to the occasion, but they are positioned well to do so. Brewers will be fine, we are young, we are developing, but we still have key pieces and can make some noise simply on account of being in the NL Central. Losing Burnes hurts short term, but we got a haul and will continue to cultivate the farm to position ourselves for the future be that on a scale of months, or years. The biggest thing is that we do have a future, and are not falling straight from contention to utter rebuild like the Royals did after 2015.

    You clearly havent seen Dante Bichette. He was one of the best hitters in baseball and was so bad at defense his war was like 0-2 every year. In 1995 he hit 40 home runs and had 100 rbi and his war was still just 2.9 for the season. Dude had like 80 errors for his career which is insane for an outfielder. Defense is just as important as offense. There are defensive players that are statistically as important as great hitters and the numbers prove it.

    Funniest thing is Schwarber’s biggest contribution was the 2016 WS where his Willis Reed like appearance was a boost to my Cubs and without hitting a single HR he hit .412 and would’ve been WS MVP if not for scrappy hard working daughter dater Ben Zobrist’s go ahead RBI double in the 10th. Who got the lead off hit that inning and represented the go ahead run though(with Almora replacing him as a PR)? Schwarber!

    Couldn’t be more wrong about Evan Carter, his hitting was a plus for sure he was hitting in almost every game which is not sustainable. His fielding and his plate discipline is unmatched and makes him so dangerous because he is so hard to keep from getting on base and is fast enough to get to nearly any ball, his hitting is far from his best attribute

    Thoughts on this vid: 10) Gimenez is plagued by LolMets and Cleveland's lack of hitting as a team but he's still young so give him time. 9) Super agree that Snell is overrated because he NEVER goes deep in games and his run support does nothing + 2 Cy Youngs seasons followed by injuries/inconsistency. Honestly he could be higher. 8) I don't know about this one honestly. 7) Dansby's offense is disappointing and not living up to that big contract he got with the Cubs + striking out a lot. 6) For Trout: recency bias sure he's in this list, but overall when he retires it's properly rated. Injuries since 2017 has hampered him as well. And it kinda hurts since I liked Mike Trout, he was a beast in his prime. 5) Like Gimenez, give him time but this puts pressure on him as a full-time rookie year technically. 4) Like Snell, super agree Quadzilla Strider is overrated. Sure strikeout everybody but he's super aggressive that he gives up home runs. As a Dodgers fan, Strider is like Kershaw in the playoffs early in his career: dominant full regular seasons then chokes in the playoffs. 3) Corbin Burnes' 2023 may have put him in there, but not this high in my opinion. Baltimore hoped to be that veteran presence on a young team for the rotation. 2) Super agree that Glasnow isn't durable. He had TJS in 2021 and missed a big chunk recovering in 2022 and the Dodgers lured him and their 2023 bugaboo was having durable starters and not to mention Julio Urias' suspension. Can't pronounce Glasnow without glass, amirite??? 1) Schwarbs is terrific in the playoffs but regular... if you put Jim Thome and Adam Dunn in a blender you get this guy. His defense is terrible too, remember he got hurt in early 2016 due to outfield collision by his center fielder which resulted his knee getting blown out but came back as a DH in the World Series when they won it all. Trea Turner should lead off + Schwarbs should be middle of order and be DH. Overall, nice analysis and good vid Barry.

    In terms of Schwarber, I think it’s pretty impractical to expect everyone to be a 5-tool player. As long as you have a 5-tool lineup, power hitters like Schwarber and Dunn and Gallo can fit into a lineup well. Sure, he’s only really good at a couple things, but he’s insanely good at them, and that’s the role he happens to have on the Phillies, and they’re a team that performs very well pretty consistently.

    Where’s “Charlie un-hustle” i.e. Manny Machado on your list?…you tempted us by showing him in the intro! Machado should be there. Perhaps Machado doesn’t make the list because his selfishness still gets him stats. Like swinging out of his shoes on 0-2 counts, not getting over runners into scoring position, not hitting behind runners, i.e. striking out a ton, hardly ever running out a ground ball, strutting like a peacock 🦚

  • @marcr196
    @marcr1962 ай бұрын

    I think you want your first batter to be your best hitter, and that is probably someone who can slug, but you also need that on base percentage. Phillies saw what happened when Schwarber went cold in games 6 and 7 of the NLCS last year and he couldn't do anything. Instead of a three true outcomes guy you need someone who hits doubles and maybe has a bit of speed to cause some chaos on the bases. So, like you said, Bryce Harper is probably better for the one hole for the Phillies.

    As much as I completely agree with all of this, hitting leadoff is just one of those weird things some guys handle well, others don't. Schwarber seems to like it, everyone else the Phillies try putting there don't seem to.

    Can you do a top 10 MLB players list, all time and/or current? Also. I wouldn’t say Schwarber is overrated, yes he strikes out a lot, but everyone knows that😂 he also still gets on base a lot from walks and his eye for the strike zone is on par with the Juan Soto’s of the league… he just has an extremely high whiff rate because he is trying to rake on every swing😂😂 he only ever had to field bc of Bryce Harper’s Tommy John surgery, he was only filling in but he’s a DH so his defensive value isn’t that much of a factor in my opinion, or shouldn’t be going forward at least as long as he stays DH. Hope you see this Barry !
