For me it's the playoff stats that separate him. 15-3, 41:8 TD:INT ratio, 5135 yards, 67.9% completion % and an absurd 5 4th quarter comebacks and 6 game winning drives. He's 28 and his career playoff stat line is basically equivalent to an MVP caliber regular season. Not even mentioning that 2 of his 3 losses came at the hands of Tom Brady and in one of those losses he didn't even get a chance to answer in OT.

Well hard to say...eras are tricky. Mahomes plays in an era if you breathe on the quarterback, it's a penalty, and normal hits to receivers in the past are now unnecessary roughness. Older quarterbacks like Montana and Marino played in league where QBs got smashed, and throwing up the middle was risky for the WR. Who knows if the rules were reversed how much longer Montana would have played or if Marino would have even gaudier stats.

However, those same people forget how different the 2000-2010s nfl is to todays nfl. Mahomes is even more babied to Brady than Brady is to Montana. This is why Brady slammed him in the post season at age 43. From Brady’s words, “I see a lot of mediocrity in todays nfl”… I honestly wonder how a prime 2000s Brady would’ve performed in todays nfl.

Brady had his bugaboo’s against Peyton in the AFC championship games, Brees and Peyton faced off in the SB, Brady went against Kurt Warner, Farve went against Elway, Rogers went against Big Ben. In the just the playoffs in the AFC it was always Rivers, Ben, Brady, Peyton. NFC you had Farve, Warner, Rogers, Brees, Matt Ryan, Cam Newton, Eli. Guys who made SB’s, won SB’s, won MVP’s. Mahomes is the best QB in an era that’s pass friendly and not loaded with elite QB talent outside of 3-4 guys including him. What we saw in the late 90’s thru the mid 2010’s in terms of QB play was legendary. We just watched Joe Flacco of all people make a playoff run, and that’s really all that needs to be said about the state of the position today. I think the argument for durability is a weak one nowadays. Football used to be a tougher game; now, defensive players are penalized or fined for just breathing on the “star quarterbacks,” unless it’s a part of their style ex. Allen or Jackson. It happened with Brady, it’s happening with Mahomes. The unbelievable amount of times I have watched a defensive player just not tackle Mahomes is mind-boggling. For me, it falls in the same vein as “somebody hit Tom? Penalty.” Not that the safety of players shouldn’t be first and foremost, but it’s a completely different era when it comes to physicality.

His responsibilities include pointing out twitchy LBs, scrambling through a wide open gap (the OL makes on purpose, under credited OL) or throwing it to any one of his receivers averaging 3 yards of separation. That’s literally a yard over the NFL average, that gets swept under the rug because they catch like bats Think the offense is hard, watch Henne march 99 yards down the field for a crucial TD in the playoffs last year. If you're a late pick who is a good qb it means your team doesn't suck and you have a skilled gm at putting togethor good teams. It takes skill to pick a talented qb late in the first round. Even your average Joe can draft a good qb with the first round pick.

Out of curiosity, I did a quick count. 27 QBs have been taken with the first pick of the draft. 7 of them won Super Bowls. 6 of those 7 won at least two Super Bowls. Note: There are only 13 QBs in history who have won two Super Bowls. 16 Super Bowls titles between them accounting for 27.5% of all Super Bowl wins. As to the theory that late-round QBs are more likely to win the SB: 7 QBs taken after the 3rd round (or in the case of Kurt Warner, went undrafted) have won a Super Bowl. 3 of them won multiple Super Bowls. 14 Super Bowl titles between them account for 24.1% of Super bowls. Brady accounts for half those wins.

The only QBs Brady had to worry about preventing him from getting to a Super Bowl were Manning, Roethlisberger and once Flacco. Mahomes is going up against Allen, Burrow, Jackson, Herbert, Tagovailoa, Stroud, Lawrence and Rodgers now too (if he is healthy). There’s a reason that nobody else comes close to his MVP and All Pro numbers, he could be put on any team with any coach and be a lock for at least 10 wins a year MINIMUM. Strongly disagree about Montana. I actually do completely agree that Mahomes is likely to finish ahead of Montana, but your argument here is just a little bit too reliant on projection, and I personally believe that we have to evaluate active players as if they were going to retire tomorrow for the purposes of GOAT discussions. If Mahomes retired tomorrow, he might have the SLIGHT edge on Montana’s regular season career, but Montana is still ahead by a greater margin in post-season play and success. Like I said, I feel very confident that he’ll get there, but I absolutely hate the idea of giving active players credit for stuff they haven’t done yet. You get to be the GOAT when and only when you’ve earned it. Also, RE: the Brady section of this video, given his style of play, I’m not sure Mahomes maintains this level of play for more than another 10 years. It’s possible, but, given his raw athleticism, it just seems like an inevitability that he’s going to take a bad hit on the run at SOME point in the next decade that sets him on a gradual decline. The kind of hit that guys like Brady rarely took, because they were such boring stereotypical pocket passers. TBH, I view Mahomes as a more talented and luckier Rodgers. He’s absolutely got the skills and mentality to unseat Brady and Montana, but there is so much more that can go wrong for a QB like him that, over the course of an entire career, it just seems like a statistical inevitability that he’s going to have a much shorter career with a much more gradual and progressive decline than Brady. I’ll be happy to be proven wrong (because, fuck Brady, amirite), but he doesn’t get credit for what he MIGHT do any more than Rodgers gets credit for what he SHOULD HAVE done.

This will depend on how much money he takes and if they can sign talent. The QB contracts are getting so large they are eating up nearly 20% of the cap. One person takes 20% while the other 53 have to share the remaining 80%.

Thing is, after this season, I'm convinced that Mahomes can take high school receivers and make them look good.

As of now I still have Brady as the GOAT with Mahomes being on the same tier as Montana and Manning. Brady still has the greater career stats and accolades which naturally come from his insane longevity. If you're going by eye test only, Mahomes, Rodgers and Marino are tops imo (on the field, not talking about in the bedroom). It's hard to project into the future, but it's more likely than not that Mahomes is named the GOAT when his career is over. 2 more Super Bowls and 2 more NFL MVPs I think will be enough (especially if the Chiefs pull off the three-peat). I'd also like to see Mahomes pull off one behind the back pass in a game as an aside.

The problem is even with the 3 peat, he's well shy in accolades. He'd have to overtake the accolades if he's going to win less rings and be called it

As of right now, no he’s not. Nobody thinks this is going to be his last ring but nobody thought Brady would go a decade without one either. Also, the fact that Brady handed him his first loss, first playoff loss, and destroyed him in the Super Bowl is going to have to matter. We never got to see Jordan/LeBron play a meaningful matchup so it’s easier to compare them. Now if Mahomes becomes the first QB to have a 3peat, that would be his equivalent of LeBron’s 3-1 moment (and he’d have a way better GOAT case than LeBron). Something unique to him that’s only on his resume.

😂😂😂 So good!!! Let's not forget, it wasn't just Dee Ford's toe. That same drive was saved for Brady after a roughing the passer when Chris Jones touched him on the shoulder

Watching Mahomes and KC these last few years is a bit like watching Max Verstappen right now for Red Bull or Lewis Hamilton during the Mercedes days. You think you can them down but they have a secret extra gear to pull ahead at the end.

Stats and wins mean nothing to me as a fan of good football. Are you fun to watch (in a good way?) then the stats and wins usually follow (but not always). Mahomes is typically not fun to watch, just like Brady was typically not fun to watch. Getting bailed out by your team/defense is cool to see for the other players, but the quarterback seems to always get all the credit. Winning isn’t a QB stat
