A superb lesson Leila! It is indeed important to be aware of these potential mistakes among which many can lead to very awkward and embarrassing situations especially the 'send to all' ! The function 'unsend' or 'undo sending' can come in handy... if carried out quickly enough of course! Carefully Re-read is equally important if only to avoid typos or misunderstandings... I worked in a firm where I moderately appreciated the assistant of my boss for some reasons and believe me I sometimes sent him some well-felt mails to express my way of thinking lol. And Sabe wasn't in my back to moderate me 😂But, although his stupidity and incompetence sometimes deserved it, I was never insulting or unrespectful though, in fact I rather like subtle irony and sarcasm which basically are still perhaps more daunting and efficient 'weapons'. Congrats for the pieces of advice and the useful lesson! 👏Apart from that nothing special. I would just tell Sabrah (if she reads) again how much I miss her and how much I love her, and that I'm looking forward to her lesson, in turn. In regards to salutations - I have had situations that (1) I do not typically know the marital status of a female people, so I default to "Ms." and (2) with foreign names in the work place, I do not typically know the gender and/or cultural practices of their name. Very good news / my young daughter got a Govt job under Government of Assam (India)

Could you explain or possibly do a video on what X means in writing and when it is socially appropriate or encouraged? I'm from the US and we do not use it unless signing a letter with X's and O's. I've seen it in contexts where we typically wouldn't indicate a kiss in the US. For example, I got a dog sitting job in Cornwall and the owner who I had never met signed off nearly everything in her texts with an X (or multiple X's). I never use them, but I'm starting to worry that my texts might sound rude because of it. At the same time, I don't want to include them in the wrong context. Any clarification would be helpful! Thanks so much! Your videos are so helpful in clarifying our differences in language usage :)

Xx means 'kisses' basically. Well, I don't claim to be an expert, Cocotulle, but it seems to me that those kind of endearment signs, symbols or emoticons should be reserved for close ones, friends, or colleagues you know well and are close to. For people you don't know enough like new customers or some supervisors, line managers, etc., I guess it is better, at least in the first times of your relation, to stick to conventional forms of politeness such as those that Leila proposed and advised. I’m not sure if it is something like lol “laugh out loud” where people will use it to creat a lighthearted situation rather than actually “laughing out loud.” I feel like it means more than kisses since I’ve had so many strangers use it with me…

Thanks for this! Very useful especially the bit about passive aggressive phrases. Btw is there any way to say Dear Sir/Madam somehow gender neutrally? How bad is it to write Dear Madam/Sir? I try to avoid Sir/Madam so I write e.g. Dear Customer Service or Dear Supplier, how bad is that? I got feedback some time ago that I was passive aggressive to write Dear Customer Service 🤷

Corresponding with US English speakers I have more often been greeted with just my given name. You, a Brit, suggest 'Hi Peter' or 'Dear Peter'. In a British English context, would just 'Peter' as the greeting be proper?

I personally say Of'en, but basically both are equally acceptable, with a silent 't' or not.
