The #1 secret to staying SAFE when traveling!

There is one thing you can do when you are traveling that will keep you safe in almost all situations, and that is being confident. Even if you don't "feel" confident, showing confidence outwardly will deter most con artists and thieves. In today's video I go over multiple ways you can make sure YOU stay safe when you're traveling, especially if you are a woman solo traveler.

Great advice, just returned from Italy. In Florence, I noticed 2 women hovering around my sister as she paid for some items, the women followed us into two more stores and again got too close for my Spidey senses. When Ii made eye contact with them and got between them and my sister they became aggressive in language, shoved me twice and left in a hurry.

I just make sure people in my eye shot know I see them. I also am aware of my environment. I also walk in a cluster and not off by myself. If someone is trying to get close to me from behind, I will stop and move so they will have to walk past me.

Having travelled and walked cities alone many times these are worthwhile tips. Spidey sense is so important. Be aware of surroundings. And yes, work out beforehand the destination rather than staring at phone. Well conveyed. 👏

Excellent advice. Thanks. I’ve always taught my children to walk with a purpose, with confidence, especially when you’re in a place far from home.

I live in New Orleans, and sadly there are some not so great areas of my beautiful city. I always walk with a purpose since I like venturing out alone. My sister jokes that I will talk to anyone and that I’d talk to a wall if it answered me back! That served me well in Italy last year. I learned so much by talking to the locals. They were very warm and friendly and willing to share stories about their cities.

You wouldn't have to worry in Japan - they are so nice. They care about people that's why someone asked if you needed help. Japan is safe.

When walking with my family along the beach walk in Barcelona there was a sketchy guy on the phone just looking at people. My son keeps his phone in his shorts pocket. Hand in pocket with phone at all times. A little further down there was another sketchy guy on his phone. He then started walking behind us. I noticed this and dropped behind my son and husband so he couldn’t get close to them. I think they called each other to let them know who they could target. After a little bit the guy went away. My spider senses were oh high.

All important tips, especially traveling alone. The last tip too!! I always wanted to go live in the mountains, so I just packed up one day and went !! Alone! I couldn't let fear stop me. Best 4 years of my life and so glad I did that!!

Thank you for these tips, especially because I've started travel solo. I'm a 67 year old female, so I could be ripe for the picking. I traveled to London alone last summer, and several times, I incurred problems with directions. But I always seemed to find someone to help me. That boosted my confidence. 😊

Regarding eye contact. Each culture is different and direct eye contact can be perceived as aggressive. Intercultural communication differences can be easily researched on line. Otherwise these are great tips!

This could be a TED Talk by itself! All of this is good advice, not just for travelling, but for daily life as well. To see a good example of the Power Pose in action, I suggest watching Céline Dion singing live. She commands the stage and the auditorium. I always post the same points on travel threads, don't make yourself a target! And 100% fake it 'til you make it 😁

Lol I must look really confident because wherever I go people think I’m a native. Of course I have not been to Asia where I clearly would not look local!! Edit: There are a LOT of places where smiling at strangers and making eye contact is not normal and immediately marks you as a tourist. I think the most important thing is to blend in. In some countries when a woman smiles at a strange man they automatically think she is - well - a hooker. Best to know your audience. I agree about having all your senses on guard though.

Some cultures such as Pacific Island cultures find eye contact intimidating and rude so consider how smiling and 'normal' eye-contact may look to them.... Submissive postures and manners matter more in many cultures than 'asserting your space and dominance' to prove confidence. Cultural respect means learning the manners and rules of the place you are going to as much as possible. 'Confidence' looks different in other cultures. What says 'I'm confident' in North America, may make you look aggressive, loud, demanding, bossy, attention-seeking and rude elsewhere. Yes, stand by a wall to safeguard yourself and belongings, walk briskly, ignore people who talk to you. Learn phrases in the country's language for: 'Let go of me', 'Go away' and 'No!'.

I'm sorry, but as a traveler, I have stopped smiling so much, especially in Europe. They don't like that. But thanks for your other tips.
