    Aloha Kyle! I don't think you realize how important this message is. For thirty years, I was a competitive tennis player, mostly a singles base line player. When I was introduced to pickleball, I was told to get up to the kitchen line, but nobody ever could explain to me why. In the beginning, I just shook my head and said to myself, 'Hey, I'm good at the baseline and can win from there!" As I delved deeper into the game, I began to see the logic of that, so I learned to move up to the kitchen line when receiving. Naturally, that has made all the difference in my game. And I have to admit, I'm one of those players who says to my partner who doesn't know that, "Get your butt up there!" LOL However, I do explain why and they are grateful I do. Great video as usual. Yours are the BEST!!! Thanks so much!

    Today I played open play where I ended up playing with or against anyone from 2.0 to 4.5, though most of the the time the 4.0+ knew each other and racked up together. I am only playing about 3.5 and didn't know who I was racking up with and several times ended up with someone who didn't come up to the kitchen on the return of serve no matter how many times I gently explained and encouraged them. I bite my tongue and play the game really frustrated that I wasted a turn at the trough as there was a 10-20' wait between games. Serve deep and return deep are good guidelines but you can recover from a shallow serve or return. Missed dinks or 3rds are part of learning and I expect that in open play, but coming up to the kitchen on the return of serve is the only inviolate rule I know in pickleball. If you can't learn come to the NVZ on the return of serve you should find a different sport.

    Agree, I should have said players who don't at least "try" to work their way up to the NVZ are in the wrong game. I have to hit pretty slow returns myself to make it to the kitchen.

    There's a lot of different aspects to this. I see too many players run blindly to the kitchen and eat a ball on the way up. You need to get to the kitchen safely, not at all costs. Also, if the other team are chronic lobbers, once again you may need to be cautious. If my 3rd shot drop is bad, I'll wait until by 5th shot or 7th shot to get to the kitchen. But I agree that playing with players who insist on staying back or even worse in the middle are difficult to play with.

    I played in a 3.0 ladder at Picklemall yesterday and a lot of people towards the bottom of the ladder were just constantly driving balls at the people on the kitchen line. Once I made it to the top of the ladder, those guys were dinking a lot more, using spin constantly and driving more selectively. Which is exactly what this video is saying.

    @@thatpickleballguy Well I don't know about that exactly, yes much of what he said was good but wanted to point out... Last year in the beginning of the season Ben was dropping 70% of his 3rd shots but at the end he was driving 60%. Of course he was almost always dropping his 5th unless someone popped it up for say the shake and bake. Pros are driving or aggressively dropping the third more than they used to. I think it is a good strategy especially if you can get the ball to drop with pace just over the net to the person's backhand. Next video should be whether to punch back (keep them deep) or do a drop shot when they drive. Getting real tired of these so called self appointed experts on the court dropping the 4th shot in the kitchen and allowing the other team to make it to the kitchen by making the run down. Another good video is where to hold your paddle when at the kitchen. Have gotten into a few disagreements over that. Had a guy stop play to tell me to get my paddle up. Ridiculous. After watching a few matches the two best doubles players are at belly button or below level along with most other male pros. Ben will sometimes move to hold the double handed backhand if anticipating he needs it but its almost always down in front. Women pros tend to hold their paddles higher mostly because they are always prepared for the double handed backhand (more common in upper level women's tennis) as they tend to utilize it more and are more comfortable with it. I'd love some deep dive into theories on this.

Separate question…if you’re playing indoors but on courts with outdoor surfaces, should you use an outdoor ball or indoor ball? I thought outdoor due to surface being outdoors but now I’m questioning myself…is it outdoor ball for outdoor elements (wind) rather than surface? And indoor ball regardless of it being a gymnasium or outdoor surface indoors? 🤔

Thanks.

  • @benpad

    @benpad

    4 ай бұрын

    Listen to Kyle more than me, but I think you need to learn on contact how good/bad you think the drop will be. Also there are techniques that can help you hit a drop from a set position, but begin your forward momentum as you hit. As rec players, we also have to be okay with being wrong 10-15% of the time and doing our best to crash and try to be offensive anyway in those scenarios-never concede even if you realize you’re going in on an iffy drop. Also key to communicate with your partner and try to move in on the same shot. If you feel the right contact on your drop after a couple attempts, consider saying “IN” to your partner as you move up to the line on a decent drop.

  • @aldrive622

    @@benpad So you were saying go ahead and begin moving to the kitchen after ball's contact? What if you don't feel right with the contact, still getting to kitchen?

  • @thatpickleballguy

    @thatpickleballguy

    4 ай бұрын

    I like what Ben said. I'd add, if you hit it and immediately feel its off, do not crash. If you are really struggling with your drops, be more cautious to move forward fast. There's no rule that says you have to get up to the kitchen after your 3rd shot drop. In fact, often at the pro level, it takes someone two or three shots after their 3rd shot to make it up to the kitchen. No point in running up there if you're about to get crushed. It's really a read you're making. Is it good? (meaning its going to bounce or your opponent will hit with an upward motion), then begin moving foward. If if not that, stay back. As you're learning, it will take you longer to tell whats good and whats not good. Of course some are obvious right away. But as you get better, You'll be able to tell if its good or not the moment after you hit the ball. Its a feel you begin to develop. I also made this video on the topic of when youre not the one hitting the 3rd shot, but the principle applies to you as well! kzread.info/dash/bejne/f2aOydVrlpvZY6Q.html Hope that helps :) Kyle

    It is a given for me, that when I'm playing with someone who refuses to come to the net, we will be losing that game. Typically they are not good enough to keep a rally going from behind the baseline. Furthermore with their weak returns, they offer me up for target practice by the opposing team. Yea, thanks bud!

    Playing back is way better more fun safer better. You got so much more time to react to the ball. Crazy spin shots power hits and sky balls or just lob over there head they back up and maybe spike it but it’s weak your back pedaling walking backwards then if you hit it over I’m slamming it near the kitchen on there side bounce one then going to curve out they won’t get there in time. And I have slammed the ball at so many players and they get hit or injured not to be mean but to show playing up is weak not the way to play. All you got playing up is dink and Volley block no power shots but spike. And hitting the ball in the air is always weaker and hard to hit where u want it to go but if u let the ball bounce its faster lower and you can hit the ball where u want so easy. And let’s say they play up then they hit block volley drop shot I run up hit over there head they run back to get it maybe then r next power shot it’s over. And my crazy any which way spin shots to people playing up will hit it out or in the net. Playing up not the way to play.

  • @ItotheCtotheE
    @ItotheCtotheE4 ай бұрын

    Unrelated to the video, in the groups I p[lay with we're all mostly amateur level or beginner. There are a few people who love putting spin the ball and it's pretty frustrating. Not top spin or back spin but lateral spin. I don't think I've ever seen spin put on the ball in the pro matches I've watched. So I don't know how much value there would be in making a video about how to play defensively against these players, but if you could point me in a direction I'd appreciate it. Having to let the ball bounce on the service return just makes our matches boring.

  • @clintroberts1

    @clintroberts1

    3 ай бұрын

    Spin is very rarely a factor when you get good at seeing it and hitting it aside from top spin. Mainly because top spin keeps the ball lower in/on it's trajectory and adds to a lower bounce and somewhat of a burst forward when hitting the ground. A lower ball is always harder to attack. A curve of a shot may be used better during a drive on the edge of the court making it more of a reach for the opponent or to curve an ATP in...otherwise it's really just a lower percentage shot. Also you my think hitting the second out of the air is boring but as you get better it will start to make sense why it's needed.

    Work on what you're not good at especially when what your good at isn't correct strategy! :)

    I have tried so very hard to get myself TO THE KITCHEN whenever on the Serving Side; preferably at least upon our Fifth Shot...but, I can't seem to force myself to think "Kitchen" during an actual rally, until too late. Can anyone help, with a surefire assistance prop or something? Frustrated! 🙃

    You should always be thinking of how to get to NEUTRAL when you’re on the serving side. Tell yourself that you cannot win until you get over the first hurdle: get to neutral by getting to the kitchen. THEN try to score once you achieve neutral. Don’t try to score from the baseline. Don’t try to score from the transition zone. Only try to score from neutral. Get into that habit and mindset.

    Ideas: - Drill returning the ball and sprint to the kitchen. This is not what you want to do in the game, but it will create a behavioral anchor to move to the kitchen. - When in the game ask your partner to prompt you before each serve or when it matters most. If the opponents are your friends then ask them to prompt you as well. - Pay attention to the speed and placement of your returns and figure out which strategy works for you to give you the time to get to the kitchen. Slow and deep ALWAYS give enough time. Drill the type of shots that give you more time. - On the serve repeat a mantra you create about getting to the kitchen I am sure there are many more ways to help but this is a decent start. Best wishes :)

    what about when your partner continually hits very weak returns - sitting high and not sort enough - feel like a sitting duck and prefer to wait on the quality of my partner's return of serve when they at this level???

    Move back a few feet when you recognize that! To give yourself more time and space!

    High isn't so much of a problem if it's deep. Yeah if its high AND short you should get low with your paddle up and if you can take a few steps back to allow more time for the smash coming your way.

    This is a great video, but you know what's almost as bad as "Never come to the kitchen guy"? "Stay at the kitchen no matter what guy". I just hope the beginners who watch this video find their way to your defensive strategy videos as well.

    Alot of reasons, you get stuck as a sitting duck and makes you look like a 3. player. Do not play with those people a second time. You know how it is to give someone tips that does not want to hear it. The best thing I like to do is that when we are returning, they are at the nvz, I'll hit a short lob and let em get hit in the face since they dont know enough to watch your partners shot and move back, heheheheh
