Perhaps this is why it's a good selling point to women - like it's a church group or something. Women (I am one) think this will give them a social group/club and a sense of community and belonging. It doesn't, of course, but it's easy to buy into the fantasy of it.

@@ThePaulahoo1 Yes! They think that they are getting friends, but the moment they quit all of those girls are gone. Friendship is so appealing to stay at home moms, military wives and other women who feel isolated from their community. I think that's what makes these groups major targets.

They are preying on the basic human desire of feeling belonging to something, and wanting money and a name for oneself. I have seen it happen with several of my friends (one that ruined her life), and it was her own fault. Still, it is wrong for these companies to do this.

Except "pyramid schemes" are illegal and MLMs are legal. They're actually right in saying this. People don't really understand the history behind why the old pyramid schemes became illegal and how other people found legal ways of applying the same type of business model. The truth is, the best way to show someone how bad of a business MLM is to get into is to show them the pure math involved and how impossible it is to make the money they claim is available to make. It's an excersize in futility to tell someone who's in MLM that it's a scam. People instantly close themselves off when they feel insulted. Show them the math that exposes the lies in the income claims and walk away. Period.

When the chain reaches you, you are already at the bottom of the exponential chain and growing it further won't be easy

Kit you're absolutely right about the mlm cult. They earn money from recruiting people down the lines and selling training material.... someone complained about this to meleluca and the company rep said," it's a shopper's club " the new member was mad. You cannot make money from the pyramid unless you signed up with the company the first few yrs and within the first 300 people. Ive tried Amyway/ Avon/ meleluca, You can't make money and you are told to purchase a certian amount of products every month to be able to have a fake discount (because the product are ridiculously expensive). I bought $100 worth of Avon and only saved $10! No income earned. Dont remember much about Amway except for the brainwashing -"spend money to make money" and use only Amway products. They actually tell you to throw away products that aren't Amway( this was in 1979). Meleluca required 70 points, about $70 /every month purchase. You cant use $70 worth of soap and vitamins or tea tree oils every month.after I quit, it took me 5 yrs to use all the crap, and I gave a lot of it away. Thanks for getting the truth about this out there. Its a multi level marketing scam that preys on people's emotions with fake friendships and love bombing to get you to sign up underneath them. Its a cult. If someone is not being straight with you, while giving you an invitation to a get together- cut to the chase and ask "is this Amway/Avon/ lolourue/ mary kay/ meleluca? Because if it is, I'm not interested!"

One person after the other gave their testimony about how incredibly rich they had gotten and how much their life had changed etc. There was no focus on the actual products being sold. I had a hunch that it was all a bunch of horseshit, and that people were being suckered in. Many years later, learning about this stuff, I'm glad I listened to my instincts and gave it the finger.

@Chad Kneller the system of MLM is exposed for the fraud that it is through analysis of the mandated income disclosure. While yes if one was a sociopath and recruited many many people into a program where 99% of people lost money and managed to keep them in it then the recruiter would be successful 1% of the time statistically. It needs to be framed for what it is tho which is an opportunity to scam people with a false dream to take their money and if that to you is success in life you need to find Jesus or Allah or Buddha and learn some love for your fellow man.

@Dududu nope, not even close. Majority of companies don't sell people, they sell goods or services. On other hand MLMs are basic pyramid schemes made technically legal by adding some kind of goods that can be, in theory, sold to customers. In practice in MLMs absolute majority of the goods stay inside the pyramid in a form of join in packages or subscription plans.

@Dududu The lack of grasp on reality with you, pyramid cultists, is astonishing, but not surprising. After all of you had some basic math and common sense, you wouldn't be doing MLM at the first place. I'll try to explain again: MLMs are scams not because of levels, not because of marketing, but because they designed to take advantage of people joining as distributors, 98% of whom lose money. Absolute majority of income of MLM pyramids come from distributors themselves and majority of effort is to to bring new distributers into it to keep it growing. Classical pyramid scam scheme.

Their overall positive attitude and desire not to be sucking on the teet of welfare drives them to want to do ANYTHING but to be one of the generational dredges on society who feels lifetime welfare is a right. It’s sad that people take advantage of one another especially in that part of the LDS community. I almost got sucked into Amway. Trust me I know what they do and they take advantage of people who just want a better financial life by working for it.

I attended an MLM presentation for long-distance phone service at the behest of a friend who was totally into it . About 30 people were there, this was in a rural county, western Washington. The presenter looked like Alex Baldwin, big, sharply dressed, all the confidence, the typical package. He stated that his company wanted ten percent share of the local phone market, which in the area being discussed was about 10% of 4000 phones, or 400 phones. The deal went like this: get 40 people to sign up, and of those 40, 2 become sales reps. They must also get 40 to sign up, and of those, 2 more reps, and so on. Each of these iterations represented a new level, and when you got to the 7th level you would be making tons of money. About 15 minutes in, I asked him if he was aware of the concept of "geometric progression". I could see immediately his response. Everyone was looking at me . I explained that there were 5 people in that group from my half of the county, the half with 4000 phones. If we 5 all got 40 people to sign up, that would be 200 customers, and when just one of THEIR new sales reps at second level got 40 more, the market would be saturated, and nobody could get beyond 2nd level...(which pays about $30/month. At the time, I made that in 2 hours just going to work without calling every person I know trying to get them to sign up). The guy's fists were clenched, the audience could immediately see what was going on, and several of them got up and left the presentation. I, of course, fled the scene, having completed the mission. I destroyed the guy, and my friend was really pissed off and eventually quit the program after realizing it was a scam.

@@Yazolight They want to get 400 customers., if five of us each sign up our required 40 customers, that's 200 customers. Level one, you are already half way to market saturation. But, if the market and the number of people you could call were huge numbers, then, you could go to a higher level. I think we got a dollar per customer per month. At level two , we get a dollar and a portion of #1 level's gross. I don't recall the actual numbers. Of course, if you are level two, you are getting a little from each of 40 people below you. Level three, well...soon you are getting hundreds of people below you, all paying a little bit.. Then ...finally.. at seventh level, I guess you get to wear a gay looking suit and stand in front of a jet...which is what these two brothers did, endlessly, in their glossy magazine . They did have some legal problems also, of course. STILL...the product they were selling was fine. But the marketing of that product was classic Pyramid.

@@gblargg women tend to be more impressionable and agreeable which is the main thing. They're more restricted to working from home especially if they're moms. Also, the women I personally know tend to be less savvy with math and don't work out the losses as well. Also, they can often push men to give them money when they're upset. If they don't have a regular job, they're less likely to consider that time is money and more likely to be content with nearly $0 per hour. As a result, they're more likely to agree with their friend or relative's sales pitch, want the lie, believe the lie, and continue losing money without realizing it, or stay in denial of their mistakes longer. Besides women, have you noticed a lot of the members being religious? That is another group of people with high agreeableness. That group can also be convinced to stop thinking about time being money or thinking about the math that makes a loss immediately obvious. They can frame the process like an act of faith and keep praying for it to get better instead of accept when the business is just a scam. People who don't support the MLM can be seen almost exactly like heretics and maybe get ostracized. Some people consider religions to be scams so a religious upbringing could groom religious members to be prime targets for more scams.

When i was in Undergrad I had a friend text me saying something along the lines of 'I have this friend in town and he is a millionaire and he is only 28, I need you to come to X adress at X time.' Knowing the guy ran with some questionable folks I presumed it was like gang related. I asked what it was about. He said he couldn't tell me but I had to come. I called him. He didn't pick up. Again said he couldn't talk. I thought he was in trouble or doing something sketchy. So I told people where I was going and if they didn't hear from me in an hour or so to call the cops. I went with a knife in my shoe up to this large house. It was inside a gated community next to the ghetto. I knock on the door and they open up. Its a bunch of Frat and Sorority types. They demand I come in and take off my shoes. I make up an excuse to go back to the truck for a sec (to sneak the knife back out of my shoe) I then text the people I told and said I was safe. The whole thing turned out to be a pyramid scheme party to sell some shitty vitamin drinks. I sit through their speech then explain to the other and some of the members that this is literally a pyramid scheme and drew it out on a piece of paper. The house owner got pissy with me as I had detered at least one guy from buying in. I was then asked to leave. My friend who had invited me originally had gotten angry with me and the following time we tried to talk he cursed me out. We are no longer friends. Their behaviour is cultlike. Please people, do not join these.

This is obviously not targeting actual professional ladies-after or men particularly. MLMs are horrible but I will sort of give Scentsy a pass considering it’s a real product and not an opportunity. That’s the only difference.

@@michellejorgensen6333 ...I'm sure she did, but Kitboga broke down for me something I have long suspected, and that is those "early stage" people "earned" that large home by starting in motion a very long line of hundreds of others who actually lost money (per the graphs shown in this video, from the companies own numbers). I know some of those big earners...and so many are not on speaking terms with anyone in town. I could never have been one of the pep rally people encouraging my family and friends to "just invest to reap big rewards"...it is disgusting to me.

@@AreYouCubingMe True enough there is a product and maybe it was just the person we know. Every conversation, party, social get together was "start selling you can make a fortune, just buy the starter kit, have parties, etc" Again, maybe it was them.

totally up for you doing more on this, the more awareness, the better. It is hard to tell someone who is in an MLM that they're in a bad spot. So if they find it out for themselves, it's better.

Many years ago my then-girlfriend's sister tried to get me involved in MLM. I am not going to name the company, but I'm sure you can figure out which one it is. (It's the one everyone hates.) It was an intense hard-sell. At one point she asked me to meet her at a restaurant so we could we could discuss her sister's upcoming birthday party. Instead, she wanted to talk more about MLM. She even brought one of her MLM friends to try to convince me. I asked about the products they sell, but all they wanted to talk about was how much money I could make. I wasn't interested, but I got a free meal. She asked me not to tell her sister about our conversation, and I felt bad really about that. It felt like I was cheating on my girlfriend... with a MLM. Anyway, I finally told my girlfriend, and she got super mad at her sister. Apparently, her mother had been recruited into the company, and then she recruited several family members, and eventually everyone kinda started hating their mother. When her sister tried to recruit me it reignited the whole mess all over again. A year later I was approached by a guy at a restaurant who asked if we could meet the next night to discuss a "powerful moneymaking opportunity." I instantly knew he was talking about that same company. But, I played along, and I got another free meal.

I was nearly caught back in the 70s with a similar scam. Luckily I heard of one person just getting a box of documents that sold absolutely nothing, or had they anything to sell. Notes on how to do this that and the other. Fee to join was somewhere in the region of 50 pounds, and if you got someone to join, you get 20, owners get 30 and so on. Pure con.
