I don't think you have to 'zoom out' looking at just the Roman Empire. You can zoom out and look at the whole of human history. The vast majority of people in power just want more power. It's a rare individual who is capable of walking away.
@billbadson7598

Yeah, and it only makes sense. Most people who get power are people who want power, and who actively work to achieve it, which is logical. The people who work to achieve a goal are much more likely to get it than those who achieve it by chance. It just so happens that those who achieve power also usually want to keep it, because otherwise what were they working for all these years? And then it falls into the muddy waters of having to figure out how much of the desire to hold onto that power is the desire to keep using it for your original goals, and how much of holding onto it is just pride and habit.

Chosen by whom? Politicians the world over are often prized for their ruthlessness... so long as they're on the same side as the person doing the judging. I wonder if the more stable the political system, the more people think they can get away with. Growing up in a system with solid institutions, they seem so permanent that a generation that grew up within them feels like there's little harm in undermining them slightly, if the stakes are high enough. It wasn't all roses and sunshine. They had Cincinatti, USA had George Washington -- and we'll just have to wait and see what America looks like 450 years after its founding. The thing you don’t mention about Diocletian is that he also came back from retirement in the Empire’s time of need. It wasn’t foreign oppressors that threatened Rome either, like in the age of Cincinnatus, but rather his bureaucratic tetrarchy. While he didn’t save the empire from power hungry rulers (including that one very famous Christian one who destroyed everything) I’d argue that he was actually far more influential than Cincinnatus. His bureaucratic restructuring paved the way for American and other governmental organization, as well as, ironically, giving the church the structure and support it needed in order to perpetuate through turbulent political times. (in fact they still use the term “diocese”, so named for Diocletian)

How about the OTHER time a farmer became America's darling by winning an Olympic gold medal by finally taking the win over Russia in wrestling for the first time in a long time? Miracle on.. ice..? Mat. Wrestling mat.
Thank you
The Roman Senate had Cincinnatus on speed-dial: HALP. C (waltzing into Rome): Now this looks like a job for me, so everybody, just follow me.
When I saw the title I thought you were talking about Diocletian. But turns out there was an even cooler guy I never heard of before. Cool video ;)
How in all the courses, books and podcasts on the Empire did I never hear about this absolute legend who disdained power?
Does put the famous saying "absolute powers corrupt absolutely" when in reality "absolute powers reveals absolutely".

One of my favorites from Frank Hebert, “All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”

@@Matthew-nw1zn It's both. Power attracts the worst kind of person, and corrupts even the best people when they get it.
Some people would rather be left alone to do their own thing rather than the time and effort sink of ruling a world they don't give much of a shit about.
Hey Simon, just wanted to let you know that some fragrance brand is moving in on your videos, I guess they heard about Rotting Turtle...
The American founding fathers were well versed in classical Greek and Roman history. Given recent events it might be a good idea to start teaching the classics and civic virtue again.

It's NEVER a bad time for that.
Power does not corrupt. It merely shows the corruption that was always there.
My friend: I've never heard of a ruler who ever gave up his power willingly.. Me, living in Cincinnati Ohio: really? Have you not?

It's just about not being an egomaniac, tyrant, dictator and megalomaniac. All the people who have power these days and people seem either unwilling or unable to stop it. I think I could easily do it as could most people. It's just that narcissists and sociopaths are the ones that *seek* power in these dark times, rather than as in the past where power was only handed to those who were *worthy* of receiving it and considered able to handle it well and use it for good, as opposed to their own enrichment and the detriment of everyone else.
Well that was the most professional ad read I've ever heard from Simon, especially since I'm used to his BusinessBlaze add reads
I've always said that the lust for power and authority should automatically disqualify one from any leadership role whatsoever. I believe he said he'd be good with someone, 1800 years later naming a city after him as reward for his services.
Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, and Titus Quinctius Flamininus we're both two of the most Noble men in Ancient Rome! 🛡️🗡️
“It is a curious thing, Harry, but perhaps those who are best suited to power are those who have never sought it. Those who, like you, have leadership thrust upon them, and take up the mantle because they must, and find to their own surprise that they wear it well.” - Albus Dumbledore
Haven't watched past the ads and I already know you are talking about Cincinnatus
Greetings, from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA!!
Power should never be given to those seeking, but to those unwilling to accept.
I've often wondered if the early history of the US might have taken a very bad turn if Washington had had an heir to pass his office/throne to.

?!?!?! What are you talking about? He didn't want or need the power anywhere near him.
A true leader. I lead when there is trouble. Nothing more and nothing less.
I have found that some of the best leaders I have ever served along side, did not covet that position, but had been elevated to it based on their ability &, the fact that they had not sought the position.
