Getting fed on the Arakaka was detrimental to him, but beneficial for the experiment I think. If a castaway were to come across a bounty, their situation had improved for sure, but they could be killing themselves by over-indulging. It's making me think that, yes, what you don't eat will spoil, but it could potentially still be used to get more food. Staying alive is the strategy.

It doesn't take much research online from much more modern medical resources to find that the advice to drink small amounts of seawater was shown to be more harmful than good. It's not a good idea to drink any seawater as it by definition cannot hydrate someone. It's saltier than you're blood, so your kidneys cannot remove the salt without removing excess water. @Chase B yes, it’s called minding your own business. You do not interfere with anyone unless they are harming others. If they want to harm themselves it’s their right. Who are you to stop them? Don’t get me wrong, I get where you’re coming from, wanting to help and save, and that is great in and off itself. The problem is people take things way past that into tyranny while lying to themselves saying they are operating under the guise of helping/saving.

@@readingthebible5413 I agree that the line has to be drawn somewhere. And where I think that line is, is when you have good reason to believe the person in question has impaired judgement. For example, if something terrible happens to you and you are beside yourself with grief and you try to kill yourself, and I slap the gun out of your hand and stop you, there are two possible outcomes. 1. Your moment of extreme emotion eventually passes, and you are very thankful to me for stopping you from making an irreversible decision in your moment of duress, and you are happy you still have the rest of your life in front of you. 2. You cool down, and in a more rational state, decide you still want to kill yourself. In that case, fine all you have to do is try again.

I did find that about 100 large vessels sink annually but most of the people on them are rescued. The United States loses about 50 commercial fishermen per year but most of them are killed by accidents that don't involve drowning or the vessel sinking. I think it's safe to say that it's fewer than 200,000 as of 2020 but it may have been a lot more in 1952. Changes in navigation, communication, and rescue services have doubtless made a huge difference. Nevertheless, 200,000 does sound almost incredible.

@@garethbaus5471 That is actually not entirely correct, the proposed Wolf Chaikoff effect is proven to maintain itself under sustained iodine exposure. I don't know if you are still interested lol. What the thyroid then additionally requires is symporters like vitamin C and selenium to limit the formation of hydrogenperoxide, which would lead to scarring of thyroid tissue. In general however, studies on the Japanese show that increased iodine intake several thousand times the RDA (which is way to low anyway) is beneficial and promotes both neuronal growth as well as enhanced energy metabolism. Anyway, castaways at sea are under a completely different situation and would probably face the same problems due to vitamin c deficiency. This could be alleviated by adequate fresh fish and algae though, since fish does contain vitamin C when not cooked. The bigger problem is actually meat starvation. Protein requires water to be broken down and not all seafoods are rich enough in fatty acids to make up for the high amount of protein in this diet. Tell me what you think. Super interesting topic :)

@@cdogthehedgehog6923 Yes, it is even mentioned in the video fairly early on as a theory to prove if you even watched it. If you're to the point of dehydration, your body is not happy and saltwater will make it worse. If, however, small amounts are used to augment whatever freshwater you get, it could be enough to survive.

Yeah, I'd say those figures are probably the worldwide deaths from drownings of any kind. Only a few thousand die at sea every year, unless it's WW2 figures or something.

Cool video. Thanks. Never heard of Alain Bombard before. What happens in many first hand accounts I've read. The castaways catch a fish or a seagull and eat the flesh. We can't digest protein without water, so they wind up vomiting and then thinking the fish or seagull, might not be palatable. The advice then is: if you're dehydrated, catch fish, drink the fluids, let the flesh dry in the sun, but don't eat the meat until you have water.
