It's not car debt. Car debt is when you owe a debt on a car. They didn't buy a car. They bought the depreciation on a car. At the end of the lease, they have to give the car back to the dealership (or buy the car).

They could actually take the truck into a dealership and tell them they’re selling it and ask if they want to make an offer. I did this on a 2019 Toyota Tacoma (yes it’s always a truck) that I was leasing after comparing offers online from different dealerships. My highest offer was $72 more than my lease buyout amount. When I took it in, the guy inspected it, said we had a deal, and asked if the truck is financed. I told him it was a lease, and he didn’t even bat an eye. Dealerships, unlike regular people, are able to directly pay the lenders and get the pink slip. I was lucky enough that my Tacoma pretty much maintained its value and with the pandemic, used vehicles are in high demand. A very kind person at Toyota Financial told me about this option when I inquired about buying my lease out. Hopefully this helps someone!

@@BusArch42 It's really not that much money in interest as long as you're not talking 10-20%+ A couple 3-5k dollars really isn't going to make a big difference in your life. Now, the lost potential of what your money could have been over that 3-8 year car loan when properly invested is the big thing. Costco for example has averaged around 80-120% every 5 years in growth in stock price since the 80's and has never failed to do so. If you had 50k in cash and put it into Coscto stock in 5 years you'd have 100k dollars and could buy your car cash and then still have the other 50k dollars. And if you put your car payments in there for 5 years your 50k could be like 65-75k dollars, way more than what interest is gonna take from you.
