As a tesla owner, Buying a used tesla vs a new has some drawbacks. The older ones have more issues that Tesla had to work out over the years that are not existent or less common in the newer models. And the newer the Tesla the longer the hardware will be able to handle all the new software updates you will get overtime. I personally would not suggest buying a tesla older than 2019 year. Teslas are also an exception to the depreciation rule. They do lose value, but much less in comparison to ICE cars.

I'm a huge Tesla fan, and shareholder. That said, some people go a bit overboard on the theoretical math of Tesla ownership vs traditional gas vehicles to justify the much higher spend. Would take many, many years to break even on gas savings if you're comparing a Model 3 to a higher trim conventional (non-luxury) sedan. And yes, fewer moving parts on a Tesla for issues to come up. But issues still come up on the parts that they have, and it's typically marketed as if all other vehicles have constant failures all the time, which is typically not the case, especially w/ certain brands.

The gas savings are not relevant in the $40-50k price range because if you’re worrying about saving on gas you’re better off buying a car for $20-35k

2nd largest yearly outflow of cash is a car, home is #1, food #3. I almost bought into the advertising propaganda 7-10 years ago... so glad I didn't. Around 6-7 years ago I started looking into the FIRE movement, and now I'm financially independent and going to work is an option. If you buy cars around 10 years old with low miles you can drive them for 5 years, and sell them for around the same price as your purchase. When it's sunny and beautiful you can go down to the beach, and if someone at work tries to pile on excessive work you can simply say no, or if you don't like a boss you leave. In fact, going to work can be totally optional once you saved enough. This is just scratching the surface of your true costs in buying expensive cars or wasteful / compulsive purchases. The real costs are your personal freedoms later in life.

Did a quick search. Used 2018 Model 3 tesla with 40k miles is 37k before taxes and fees so probably looks at about 42k. Only saving 8k.

And of course with an EV from mile one the very expensive batteries wear down giving you less and less range and a huge maintenance bill to replace. Not so with an ICV.

People need to start looking at vehicles like they’re appliances. Use it for as long as you can and know that if and when you sell it you’re not gonna get nearly what you paid for it.

@@mocheen4837 i would consider selling it now then. There is a 90s car nostalgia going on right now. I would be afraid of it changing with the new trend. Thats a great return on investment!

Thing is the car I have right now is not comfortable. Sure, I only use it to get to work and back from work. My first ''real'' car was a 2002 honda accord. I bought it for $4000 CAD in 2013. The dealer told me it would need a new oil pan. But every other month I had to go to the mechanic because something needed to be fixed. I ended spending $5000 in repairs in less than 10 months. Over the time I got the car, it cost me $500 per month. Then I bought a used 2013 impreza in 2015, had it ever since. The car is good but is not comfortable at all for long rides. It also doesn't have enough ground clearance for the canadian winters. 1 month after I bought the car, I got a hole in my front bumper because there was ice on the side of the road as I was giving enough space for a snow plow to pass. I mean knowing I work everyday and I can't even afford a new car sucks. I can't even afford used cars. Heck, a 2018 f150 lariat has an asking price of $38,500 CAD. 2015 4runners sell for $30,000-35,000 CAD. 2017+ colorados z71 sell for $32,000-35,000 CAD. That is just outrageous. Thing is, I already talked about money at work, and a female coworker got mad at me because I said I don't have the means to buy a house. She came to me and said ''I pay my house by myself, I had a daughter to raise, I sent her to a private school, I go on a cruise every year and I have a new car every 5 years. You need to learn how to budget. Want me to show you how to budget?''. Most people are living over their means and don't/can't understand people that are trying to live debt free. This having been said I would be lying if I told you there is not a week that goes by without me taking a look at cars available near me. But reason keeps me from wasting my money.

I'm not sure when this car was released. If only there was some technology on this desk we could use to access this information.

I agree with everything EXCEPT loss in value...my 2020 Tesla has gone down $3000 in value....and thats me driving it everywhere. I disagree from a drop in value standpoint....these aren't like average cars that depreciate.
