That Pedal Show - Big Tones From Small Amps? Yes You Can!

Музыка

Welcome to That Pedal Show and thank you for watching - please subscribe to our channel and visit our store www.thatpedalshowstore.com/

In this video Daniel and Mick are discussing the practicalities and benefits of using lower power guitar amps to get great tones at real-world volumes.
We’re also responding to a question we asked regularly: ‘Can you use some normal/smaller amps to get good sounds, instead of the really powerful/expensive/boutique stuff?’
Yes we can!
So we’re taking a Fender Blues Junior - probably the most widely used 15-watt valve amp in the world - and a 5-watt Marshall Class 5 as the basis for our tones, on the end of a bunch of common effect types.
The pedals we’re using today:
• Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Deluxe
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2uVGMBL
USA: bit.ly/323rheM
Australia: bit.ly/2ZA9MfE
• Lovepedal Vibronaut - no longer made
• Wampler Tumnus
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2AKx1eG
USA: bit.ly/3yJjLlu
Australia: bit.ly/2Vy2v1q
• Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem - no longer made
• Analog Man King Of Tone
www.analogman.com/kingtone.htm
• Chase Bliss Audio Warped Vinyl
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2H7vIJ9
USA: bit.ly/3dZ3Y8A
Australia: bit.ly/2JxcATd
• Electro-Harmonix Memory Man 1100-TT
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2WbQLhG
USA: imp.i114863.net/GWqeE
• MXR M300
UK & Europe: bit.ly/2hLvESX
USA: bit.ly/3yo9D1c
All pedals are going into both amps (yes, wet/dry would sound fantastic too).
Interesting bits and go-to sections…
• What amps are we using today and why? 1:43
• Lovepedal Vibronaut brief intro and sounds: 3:23
• Origin Effects Cali76 Compact Deluxe discussion and sounds: 4:13
• Amps played on their own and together: 7.39
• Amps in and out of phase with one another: 8:21
• Can you use small amps live? 11:10
• Tumnus discussion and examples: 13:54
• Compressor into Tumnus: 15:15
• Overdrive pedal considerations for small amps: 18:00
• Modulation / Warped Vinyl discussion and examples: 22:05
• Reverbs and delays: 26:06
• Rock rhythms with distortion: 29:30
• Dan making awesome noises with the Gretsch: 34:20
Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Gibson Custom 1958 Les Paul Standard and Gretsch Players Edition 6118T Anniversary.
As mentioned above, amps are a Fender Blues Junior III and a Marshall Class 5 (original version, without the low-power mode).
As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

Hey guys.....love the show! This video in particular resonates with me as I have played guitar for 20 years, but only at home. I have continually downsized my amps over the years to try to get a better tone at a more reasonable volume. I had a 40 watt Mesa DC-5, then 22 watt Fender Deluxe Reverb, and finally a 15 watt Fender Blues Jr. Now I am looking in the 5 watt or less market and would love for you guys to consider doing a show on them. I am leaning towards the Vox AC4-1 12. Keep up the great work!!!

I first saw this video ages ago and thought, “Well, that’s nice and all, but I don’t see me ever using two amps in my (acoustic) trio. Now, I’m about to embark on adding some electric to the group and had a friend (and local guitar tech) build me a 5 watt tube amp (a Fender Champ clone) and it... is... AWESOME! The Marshall Class 5 is my next choice because it’s such a different sound. It won’t happen soon because of finances (the amp itself, extra microphone, and accessories). Is there another amp I should be looking at to pair with my tweed “Champ”?

Daniel & Mick, if you're doing something more with budget amps in the future you should REALLY look into the new Fender Bassbreaker amps. I got a 007 and it's absolutely sensational. +TsiratiugZ Hello! It's an American Vintage '62, around 15 years old or so. The pickups are Seymour Duncan Antiquity and the saddles are KTS Titanium. Otherwise its stock. I think the pickups Fender is using in the current American Vintage guitars are as good as anything by anyone. After that, my personal opinion is that it HAS to be nitrocellulose, have a vintage vibrato with a quality steel block. Light body, biggish neck. That's where Strats sound the best to my ears. And then I'll play a Squier that I love... Go figure as the Americans say. :0)

  • @ThatPedalShow

    @ThatPedalShow

    7 жыл бұрын

+Marc Piechowicz Depends on the gigging situation Mark. The AC4 is a very specific thing - great fun and good sounding, but they're very definitely in 'small amp' territory. Bit boxy and small sounding (which might be exactly what you want). However, the 15 is the better all rounder we think. Sounds bigger and fuller. You can turn it down for the flat, and it'll shout loud enough for most small band situations. You need to play them both really - you may prefer one instantly. Cheers!

What I love about really small amps is that you can crank them all the way up on the clean channel, and get awesome old overdrive without crazy volime. I did this with a Gibson Les Paul Studio and some 5 watt Marshall tube combo at my school, and it sounded brilliant.

Excellent episode as always... In my experience i found out that if you pass the signal through an overdrive or a boost pedal which has a voltage doubler (example: keeley katana boost) it makes a great difference as it enhances and widens your original signal, giving your sound a huge headroom. You can try it for your bedroom volume too. Works wonders!

Great video... You got some massive tones from those tiny amps. For people who say its impossible tiny amps give "boxy" tone.......just watch this video! I rarely gig anymore and mostly use a small amp at home and at small party's. This was very instructional. I have new found respect for a compressor too!

I own the BJR, Bassbreaker 007, Marshall Class 5 (and about 10 other tube amps).... After extensive testing of the Bassbreaker 15 against the Bassbreaker 007, I prefer the 007 (and the Class 5). The 007 gets a better breakup whereby the Bassbreaker 15 just seems a bit sterile... unless you really need the extra volume... I agree, the Bassbreaker and a BJR, and you can cover 99% of tones you may want. Bassbreaker is that good. But I am not ever getting rid of my Class 5.

Hello Dan and Mick, I want to thank you for the awesome work, I've been learning lots and lots since I started watching your videos. I only recently watched the video on the graphic EQ, and was wondering if you guys might do something like it, but instead exploring parametric EQ pedals? There are some pedals that focus on that type of equalization, and it's a different approach to EQ. Thanks again for the great videos, you guys rock.

I wanted/needed a new, quieter amp for a home-away-from-home, and I really tried to buy a Morgan AC20 or MVP23, but there is a flavor there, and perhaps it is the class A thing, that just doesn't sit right with my ears. I walked away from about 3 hours of playing those amps spread over two days, stopped at another store and bought a Blues Junior after about 10 minutes. And I left with a huge smile on my face. I have "better" amps at home, but the Blues Junior was the first valve amp that I bought and sold years ago, and it still sounds great. Thanks for showcasing a broad array of products and helping us get the most out of them. (Now, to purchase another Tube Screamer, like the old one that I sold years ago...)

Hi Guys, great show and your choice of small amps is brilliant! For those of us who can't afford 2 amps, or it just isn't feasible to have or gig with 2 amps, we have to choose one that is most versatile. This is why a transistor amp with a tube overdrive may be the most versatile option. This accomodates electric and acoustic guitars. I am anxiously awaiting when you have a show that features this as an option. :-) Thanks guys!

I have a lacquered tweed BJ with Jensen speaker. Playing it with fender strat with 69 custom shop pickups and it sounds amazing. Playing it on gigs in smaller clubs with volume at 6 and master at 3.5 and its loud enough. Could crank it much much more. To me it's the best Amp for smaller gigs up to 100 people venues. Need to try master on 12 though, since many people say the Amp sounds best then.

Thanks so much for this video (and all the Pedal Show vids...well done). I own both these amps (as well as about 10 other tube amps)... Gotta say, I have read some average reviews on the Marshall Class 5 about the time it came out. I recently picked up a C5 and LOVE the amp. It has such a great tone (even compared to "much better, more expensive" amps). I was looking for a mini-Bluesbreaker of sorts and this hits that tone very well. Much different than my Fender tube amps (the Marshall is much more mid punchy tone). The closest thing I can compare it to is my Fender Bassbreaker 007 which is a great little amp (perhaps the best small amp I have heard). If you are looking for that Fenderish clean jangle, the BJR is a great option but if you are looking for that meat in the middle, the Class 5 can;t be beat. Hoping the Pedal Show will bring in a Fender Pro Junior sometime to show how solid an amp that is. I am starting to treat amps like just another pedal anyway....want a different tone...choose a different amp.

+That Pedal Show hello from Puerto Rico. Really love the show, I've learned so much gear wise. If you guys are thinking of doing a transistor amp video, please try to get some good ones like maybe an Orange Crush Pro 60 head or combo, a Tech 21 trademark series or the new Yamaha thr 100. The thing is that there are some transistor amps that rival tube amps and it would be very interesting to see how you guys approach this. And if you guys now of other great transistor amps that are in the market, I think it would be great for people to know if they are looking for another alternative without sacrificing tone or feel. Once again love the show, cheers.

A hunt? They’re all over Reverb in head and cabinet versions with special editions available. These amps are not hard to find. Right this second there are 35 on Reverb between 380 for a normal combo and 1100 for one of the limited brown/burgundy head/cabs with a pinup girl printed on the grill.

Hey guy :) Great stuff as usual! I mean I use a stereo setup and one of the amps is a 5 watt Blackheart amp and I'm running it through a 4X12 ...but I'm still trying to get a nice tone I'm happy with. But it's nice to know it is possible to get even a half way decent tone! ...On a side note, I'm actually really liking the "Cali76". I'm definitely going to have to look into getting one soon. Cheers guys! :)

Oh fellas thank you thank you thank you! Been wanting a video like this for years! My Class 5 has been gigged all over the country either on its own, miced up or through my 2x12 and I love it. Such an underrated amp. Following your advice I have an AC10 on the way to pair with it and cannot wait. I'm not a big pedal man but I run a reverb/delay and a Rangemaster clone into mine and the tone is to die for. Thanks so much for popularising small amp usage and hopefully now I won't get sneered at by other guitarists so much when I rock up with my mini-Marshall (before they hear it) I learned a load from this and look forward to experimenting. Made my day. Excellent, excellent stuff.
