“What is the correct order for my pedals?” It’s the first question for anyone getting into stompboxes for the first time, and will crop up again and again no matter how deep you get into the whole glorious mess. So in this episode, Daniel and Mick offer some practical advice on what to put where, and why…
Before we begin, let’s say this loud and clear for the record. THERE IS NO ‘CORRECT’ ORDER FOR YOUR PEDALS! However, there are a few conventions to follow that serve as an excellent start point when you’re trying to make a decision or solve a problem. This video explores that whole deal.
What we ARE dealing with in this video…
Basic effects order:
Wah
Boost/light drive
Heavy drive/distortion
Fuzz
Compression
Modulation
Delay
Tremolo
Reverb
What we ARE NOT dealing in depth with in this video…
Effects loops. Please watch this. • That Pedal Show - Effe...
Volume pedals. Please watch this: • That Pedal Show - Wher...
Gain stacking with multiple overdrive pedals. Please watch this: • Gain Stacking With Ped...
EQ. Please watch this: • Yes You Do Need A Grap...
As ever, all effects and amp routing is handled effortlessly by TheGigRig G2. For more on G2 see www.thegigrig.com

I can't believe it took a year and a half for me to finally take the advice of this video and try using the compressor after the overdrive. But doing this is absolutely the best improvement I've made in 40 years. And it's not only an improvement in tone, but what it does for me when playing with my band is no less than phenomenal. It has made the whole band sound much better. My guitar is now much easier to play. I touch the volume pedal maybe 3 times in a 4 hour show. It used to be every song. But now the band blends so much better. Solos sear through the mix without raising the volume. Everything has taken on a studio vide. I have long complained that our band just doesn't seem to be gelling, and now I find it was me who has been failing to blend. So humbling, but still so excited to have discovered this setup. I like phaser before OD too, Dan. Guitar > Wah > Hardwire CM-2 O.D. > Compressor > Noise Gate > Volume Pedal > Analog Delay > Boss CE-5 Stereo Chorus > Two Fender Blues Deluxe Amps set at least two feet apart with the stereo chorus on all night. From The Police to Alice In Chains this is tonal bliss for me. And maybe this setup works so well for me because the Fender Blue Deluxes lack almost any compression at all until windows are rattling.

WOW DAN... Mick... not just helpful, totally revolutionary! Been playing over 40 years and chasing tone 25+ As I watched this video numerous times and reordered my boards, I suddenly discovered I had so much better sound than I imagined... Perhaps I can stop chasing the next pedal and just enjoy playing what I have, even pulled a few out of storage and the work nicely without creating a bunch of background noise!?! This was without a doubt the most helpful tutorial I could ever hope for... thanks so much! WAH - FUZZ - MODULATION - HIGH GAIN OD. - LOW GAIN OD. - BOOST - COMPRESSION - DELAY - TREMOLO - REVERB = (~: Player

Excellent, thanks. I moved compressor behind gain section and finally I managed to get good marshal like compressed sound from by Fender Deluxe Reverb. What is worth mentioned, that in this setup tube screamer (High level - medium drive) should not be compressed, it needs to drive my tubes. Thus I have updated my setup as: Guitar -> MXR Distortion 3 -> Boss Super OverDrive -> Compressor -> Ibanez TubeScreamer -> Fender DRRI. Anyway, thanks for this channel.

I played in a Rush cover band for over 20 years and Alex used a lot of mild flanges - whether flange or his 80's & 90's chorus though - you want them AFTER compression, but BEFORE OD, i.e.: you want the crunch of the OD to dominate the sound on Rush songs afterwards it is too "swooshy"

You are GREAT! I discovered "That Pedal Show" just a month ago and it seems to me one of the best websites to continue learning about the world of tone. Please keep on groovin Wah / volume> TC Comp> Vick's Fuzz> Sweet Honey OD> Xotic RC // into the Loop >> Phase90> Chorus> TC Nova Delay> TC Reverb HOF >>>> Mesa LoneStar Special (I love it BTW) ...But I'm gonna try some different pedal positions, for sure :)

+1971SuperLead Chorus before overdrive is awesome. I've been having a lot of fun with: Guitar > wah > volume > compressor > phase > overdrive > distortion > chorus > delay > Mesa Rectoverb 25 combo (clean and distortion channels). This allows me the best of both worlds in terms of having the chorus and delay before and after distortion. It's killer :)

Would your nose gate earlier in the chain be best. I thought it would go tunner volume noise gate ect. I KNOW there is no rules and that's half the fun. Just trying to make sense of why it's a good thing

  • @1971SuperLead

Jesse Belanger The noise gate should be after noisy effects like the overdrive and compressor, but before the reverb and delays. The tuner needs to be before everything but maybe the wah. I use a clip on tuner, so I didn't add it on the chain.

+1971SuperLead Where you put your noise gate in the chain all depends on what you want to do with it. In a guitar effects chain they generally end up at the end of the chain right before any modulation or time based effects (which ideally should be ran through your effects loops anyways if ya got one and not into the front of the amp) this works; however like this the gate is generally ends up setup for one use, your high gain tone or your clean tone. Problem with this is if you have it setup for your clean tone then the gate will never close and if its setup for your high gain tone then its going to close all messed up on your clean tone sucking away all your sustain. Put your gate right before what you are using for gain and you will get a matched sound for your high gain tone as your clean tone. The ideal way to set your chain up would be a

Fascinating discussion and great demonstrations. Personally I like my clean boost after my compression, so I've still got another level, but compression after overdrive so it keeps things under control. And I know I have my tremolo in a weird place (I go mediumOD>lowgainOD>dist>trem>comp>boost in front of the amp) but I also have a Mobius in the FX loop that I can get tremolo later in the signal path for if needed. Tremolo before compression is great because the lighter you play, the more impact the tremolo has; conversely the louder you play, the less you here the tremolo effect.

Great video guys! Adding an overdrive after a fuzz can also help to eq some of the nastiness out of the sound. set your fuzz to taste, run the OD after (any OD with a "tone" control) and remove some of the high end harshness with the OD tone knob. set your volume and gain to taste (less is more in this case.) For this reference, I use a Fender 5150iii, head, into my cab, fuzz first in the chain, OD after. It can also be set to be a relatively clean boost via the volume or level control. These pedals run at the front of my amp. A demo with a humbucker equipped guitar would also have been great, as humbuckers are already compressed, and it will affect the sound and dynamics differently.

This has been mentioned in some other episode, or maybe it was on JHS channel. Placing a soft clipping overdrive after fuzz with just a touch of gain, or running it into a lightly driven amp can smooth out the "hair" on the edges of the heavy fuzz sound. And you end up with unbelievably smooth violin-like sustain on leads.

Hey there mates! Greetings from the Philippines! This is such an informative show! Really helpful for musicians out there. ☺️ By the way, below is my setup as of the moment. So, can you suggest what's the best order for my effects? Guitar > tuner > buffer w/ booster > 7band EQ > ts09 > distortion > noise gate > compressor > chorus > delay > tremolo > reverb > looper > amp (all effects are true bypass) Thanks in advance and have a good one!

Hi Guys, I hate that it took me almost 2 years to stumble across your Channel and this Video!!! 1st, you guys do some extremely helpful Videos and make them exciting enough to not only keep me laughing, also keep me on my toes so I don't miss anything useful!!! Thank you very much. Here is my situation and question. I have a rather large Pedalboard, that for the most part, I know what order works best for me. As you said, " There is no right or wrong way" to put your Pedals in order. My ONLY exception to that being, if you are using an Amp that actually has a DECENT Effects Loop, in my opinion, any Pedal which happens to be a " GAIN STAGE " Pedal; meaning a Pedal which actually Effects the Volume of your Amp......Distortions, Overdrives, EQ's, Compressors and the Fulltone.....BLOWING THE HORN......Mini Deja Vibe (MDV1) Uni-Vibe, Pedals such as these should run in line between your Guitar and Amp. Again, my opinion, because of the fact they have Gain, will be running into the Pre-Amp section of your Amp hence adding more Gain to the Pre-Amp portion of your Amp. My opinion.....again.....I don't believe you would want to run 2 different Gain Stages before the Power Amp portion of your Amp since the Effects Loops, in most cases that I have found, run with the Power Amp section of your Amp Head, Combo....yadda....yadda.....yadda... FINALLY....you may say.....TO MY QUESTION!!!!! YAY!!!!!! I noticed, in this Video, you decided to demonstrate using your Compressor both before and after your Carpe Diem.....if that's spelled correctly!!! What a HUGE difference it made running it AFTER your OD!!! I am having an issue getting enough Volume from my MXR EVH Flanger......Blowing the Horn..... This is the ONLY Pedal I am having this issue with. I have placed the Flanger in every spot, order wise, on my Pedalboard.......I had to put "Order Wise On My Pedalboard," to keep the Haters and Mentally Deranged people from telling me to place it in a certain order inside my body.....which they will probably do anyway.....LOL.....poor Slags and Losers with no life other than to make fun of people while hiding behind their Cell Phones and Computers....ANYWAY.....I am only needing to boost the output of my Flanger, which happens to run, LAST IN LINE, IN MY EFFECTS LOOP. Currently, I do not use Compression nor do I even own one!!! Collectively, what advise could you guy's offer to help me achieve that MONSTER " UNCHAINED " in your face Flanger Tone??? Please forgive my 1st Edition Novel of a question and will definitely be appreciative of any advise you may have to offer!!! Hopefully, you will see this and be able to answer in less time than the 2 years it took me to find your Channel and Videos!!! Now that I have Subscribed to your Channel, it will probably take me 2 years just to go through and watch all the Videos I feel I need to feed my thirst for TONAL NIRVANA!!!! Thanks again, look forward to your reply, Keith Darling
