Even as seasoned TPS viewer, I really like these two last episodes. Its so refreshing, to get back to the basics and re iterate how to build the pedal collection from the beginning and why we have some many different option.

Yeah I often find myself going back and watching the old videos

Nothing makes my day like watching two grown men having fun as kids, laughing and playing and doing what they love to do and at the same time teaching us how to do it! I do miss those playing days not caring for anything and just having tons of fun, time would fly and I would get home with a ear to ear smile! Best show guys!

Guys, I should probably post this somewhere else but social media is not my strong point. Last night was amazing! You were obviously well rehearsed, playing songs everyone loved, great vibe, and it was absolutely spot on and thoroughly enjoyable. If it had been just the TPS band's gig that would have been enough. But then Andy Timmons, wow, I had no idea what we were in for. It was one of the best evenings of live music I've ever seen, in 45 years of going to gigs. And certainly the best since the Stones at the O2. I'm running out of superlatives... Cheers! Paul.

Idea for a challenge: Dan and Mick have to agree on an amp, guitar and pedals. They both have to get their "signature" type of tone using the same rig! Can they do it? It would be really interesting and educational to test their mettle at tone shaping and getting what they want out of a rig that may or may not be ideal for their preferred style/tone. Many of us have the rig they can afford, rather than their rig of choice. I would love to learn from the "masters"!

Chorus is so freaking nostalgic for me, it'd probably be the first piece of modulation I'd get. In fact, it was; I got the CE-2W within minutes of hearing what it sounded like. The big surprise for me in this video was that Tumnus, though. It's sooooo warm, like a spicy beef stew.

My favorite chorus has been the super chorus setting on my zoom ms70 I've had plenty of more expensive chorus like eqd boss etc. But I really like this one

This series is really so good, but on another subject: I've been watching older videos as I venture more into pedal-land (I'm a bass player playing more guitar these days), and I just want to say that both of you have really improved as players. You were both very good to start with, such great contrasting styles - but really, go back to videos from like 2016 like I did. Both of you are just playing brilliantly these days, you have both really advanced significantly as players. Along with your pedal/tone journeys, I am really, really appreciating your musical journeys. Just one more reason to keep watching and supporting!

Over the years I've owned and used lots of gear, from my early days as a kid with cheap student solid state amps and vintage tube amps that weren't expensive; with pedals, to racks, back to amps and pedals, to modelers, and revisiting many types of gear. Most recently I moved from using modelers direct into FRFR to using multi-fx into tube amps. Having owned a Helix in the past, I recently purchased an HX Effects and it works great in front of my Fender tube combo amps, and in the loop of my dual 100 watt Engl half stack. I can create patches and snapshots designed for each of my guitars; easily edit on the fly and switch modes quickly to navigate. HX Effects and tube amps are my go to rig now.

My DejaVibe is the one pedal that makes it onto my board no matter what. It’s a great way to make rhythm sounds more interesting and rich and can also be a great lead sound.

Dan and Mick: After YEARS of watching TPS while playing an all-in-one digital effects/amp modeler (for budgetary reasons but great for what I needed), I'm finally diving off the deep end and will pick up a new-to-me Matchless Lightning today! I'm in the process of setting up a small board: 2 drives, reverb, and delay (+ tuner)... I feel so educated going into this thanks to everything I've learned from you and no doubt waited for a Matchless to come along at the right price after enjoying Dan's HC-30 for so long. Cheers!!

Congrats! The Matchless is going to be energising and scary after the modeller. It’ll be like walking out of a dark and safe cave into the blazing light while dinosaurs try to eat you. Go bravely and don’t sweat what’s in your head too much. Kick off with the Matchless and try a couple boosts and simple ODs. Nothing too mid boosty. As a start, I've landed on a J Rockett .45 Caliber, Walrus D1, and Walrus R1 for a compact, versatile board (playing primarily in my church band). Will add a boost next, per your advice. Thank you!!

I respectfully disagree on the tuner bit ! Some individuals ,like yours trully ,are hearing impaired to a certain point ,so looking at a tuner gets you going in the right path , at least until you get used to your specific rig , and that takes a long time , but it's very well worth it ! These days I tune by seeing & listening / hearing ! But the mates suggestion is very valid ,to those not hearing impaired ! Live ya guys ! Peace ! 😎👍✌

You guys are wicked !!!! 2- days ago I was reminicing ,about my first pedal 👉 MXR Micro Amp / Booster pedal . I almost cried , dam ! 😥 Ten years later ,2 pedalboards , 5 axes , 6 amps , 1,200 patch cable of all sizes ! 652 pics ! Mostly worn ! Lets not foget that I have had to relocate ( move from apartments ) 8 - times , my neighbors dont really appreciate the lifestyle ! Now Im in a cabin ,atop a wonderfull slope in Colorado , nice views and nobody cares about my tones because they cant hear them !!! Wonderful !!!! Keep up the good work guys , I think Im gonna cry again !!! Peace ! 😥👍✌

Got two sparks. One always on as I was gutted when I switched it off and the other for actual boosts.

These last two videos have been great! Yes it's beginner's ground and all that, but the way you approach the signal chain is priceless. I'd rather pay attention to my guitar than my pedals so these roadmaps are really useful. Going to try putting Tremolo after the delay now. ;)

The Angel Wing is a good shout, sounds great. I would say their are a number of Vintage Analog Chorus’s that are very versatile and pretty affordable like the DOD FX65, or the Arion Chorus and many Japanese copies that can do Chorus to Flanger to Rotary turned all the way up and when using a tremolo in addition sounds really close! Also the Dyno-my-Roto by Keeley is a great affordable Rotary Pedal that also has Flange and Tri Chorus settings!

This is so great because you're explaining that some pedals are niche and some are general use. That is an important distinction .. not that one is better than the other, but they do different things in different hands. Cheers fellas, keep rocking/noodling/echoing.

It makes me happy to see some solid, budget option pedals. This goes to show that our understanding of how to get the tones we want is far more important then how much we paid for the gear. I have some really nice boutique pedals, but lately I've been on more of a budget pedal kick. There are some real gems out there. Great video and stellar playing from you both. Cheers

It's good to see vids like this. When you've been down the rabbithole for a long time, it's good to poke your head back out of the top to remind yourself what normality looks like!

Agreeing with lots of others here. I've not found a video of yours that wasn't accessible to someone new to pedals, but it might sound intimidating sometimes until you actually watch :) Hopefully new viewers will stick around - come for the tangents, stay for the deep dives!

Hello again Dan and Mick! I have to thank you again. I've been playing (poorly) for 30 years or so, and you two have opened my eyes in so many ways. From how to use a Fuzz Face to helping me understand my mental hangups pertaining to playing, your shows have helped me develop into a less poor player. And Dan, that shirt is the best! Imho, a flanger makes far more sense than any other modulation effect for a board like this. It can mimic so many other modulation effects, that it should be the first choice on a versatile board. As always, ymmv.

I rebuilt my board a couple weeks ago to make it more simplified. I found that I have been spending more time tweaking the knobs than playing guitar. 2 drives, 2 delays, a tremolo, and a looper. I’m putting together a separate board the knob tweaking and to try out new pedals.

Dang, that Tone City Angel Wing was a real surprise, I'll have to keep an eye out for one of those.... So! Now that you guys have established the 2x2x2 format for a board, can we expect a future video where you both do one tailored to your unique tastes? Might be a fun challenge video.

Great pair of episodes. I’ve got a tumnus deluxe, and it’s fantastic, plus it gives you some more tone shaping capability. I also recommend a Harmonious Monk harmonic trem. Essential pedal for me 😉

Thanks so much for this! You have literally given me a lightbulb moment where I now know how to organise & start my first proper pedal board. So far I've been lost in a random and chaotic mess of pedals with no real order! Thank you!!

So. Between this show and last week's, I'm expecting the second . I'll call it, "The Lost Episode" Where us once beginners bought six or more od's and a couple of distortions before we even got to the warble-y stuff. P.S. Mick's use of the delay as a thickening effect really added some bread to the broth. It made the licks a little tastier. P.P.S. Nobody should ever poo-poo a Deluxe Reverb.

Have watched you guys for years, love the shows. This one has helped for sure. I went back to this one because I am in pedal order trouble. My first three pedals were an Ibanez TS808, The Wampler Tumness as shown here, and a Boss CH2 Wazacraft Chorus. I have recently bought my next 2 which are a cheap Blax Delay Pedal, and an Ibanez 850 Fuzz. I was lucky to get this because I don't think they are made anymore. I have a shortlist of 2 pedals for my 6th. I am looking at a Bozz Auto Wah, or a TC Electronics SkySurfer as an extra Reverb. I like and use a lot of the Hendrix and Peter Green sounds. My amp is a Fender Blues Junior III (just before they changed to a Celestion speaker). So my pedal order is the > 850 Fuzz going into the Tumness > then going into the TS808, > then going into the Blax Delay > then into the CH2 Chorus. I was told at the guitar store to put the delay before the CH2. I have tried both ways round. The guitar is an FGN Odyssey Expert HSS Strat. I always start of with a cheap pedal if an area is difficult for me. My delay will be replaced by an MXR Carbon Copy long term. Delay is my weakness. So not worth the expense right now.

Super fun past two videos! I use to be a guitar teacher, and I always loved giving board building advice similar to what you guys laid out. Watching my students build their boards almost brought tears to my eyes haha. Cheers!

Gents. I love these shows with all the basics discussed. I am a big fan of boutique ish pedals, but it's is just great to (re)discover classics and affordable stuff. Maybe you could use this board for a upgrade your board show because the topic occurred in a recent vcq. Either changing pedals or guts (cables, power, maybe even a switcher). Even if the viewers may be fewer on these type of vids, at least I find them great fun. Cheers ye Olde tone nails

Dear D&M, Over the last couple of years of watching this channel, I have acquired a few pedals. On my board currently are TC PolyTune 3, followed by a TC Plethora X5 (yes, I know the Plethora has a tuner, but it's awkward to access and I think the PolyTune works better for me). In the effects loop of the Plethora I have my gain stages; Tone City Bad Horse, Joyo Sweet Baby, Fultone OCD, and a Greer Lightspeed. Lastly, I have TC Spark Boost, into my HRD or my new Line 6 Catalyst. The options afforded to me by these gain stages as well as the all the effects in the Plethora, I have barely scratched the surface of what I can do. This has effectively alleviated my G.A.S.... for the moment. But I would never have reached this point with you. Thank you for all you've taught us about the wonderful world of guitar and pedals... and amps. ;)

Great series of episodes! I love the emphasis on the concepts, these concepts apply to any brand and type of pedal. Solid work, it's so practical it's easy to dismiss, but it's fundamental. No matter what the algorithm predicts, this is great work!

Massive fan of all TPS airings but these past two episodes have caught my eye/ear. You've totally nailed the lesson that nearly all guitarists go through in setting up that board but in doing so you have also shown a board that 100s if not 1000s of pro musicians use (or a version of) this is both simplistic and all you need at the same time. Yeah, the pedal names change and some swap a chorus for a phaser or a flanger and a reverb for a second delay, and maybe a single pedal for a odd sound on one or two songs but you've nailed it. This board is 1000 stages right now, tonight.

For a 6 basic pedal grab and go board... MXR Dyna Comp mini, Visual Sound VS-XO, Mooer Ensemble King Chorus, BOSS DD-7, Source Audio Vertigo, TC HOF

I LOVE envelope filters. The way they interact with your picking makes you really care for dynamics. They sound familiar like a wah pedal, but also slightly different and unique. Controlling the sweep with my picking hand instead of my foot is convenient, too. Love them, did I mention that?

Invaluable advice for those starting their pedal journey, great sounds and playing as well :)

Really great show (again), you two. You've highlighted, again, the adage that should so often be remembered: "If it sounds good, it is good." I recently got myself both the Flashback 2 and Hall of Fame 2 so I could find *my* delay, and *my* reverb sound. I've been through a bunch of overdrives trying to find *my* sound in there somewhere. This helps and I'm hoping it helps others.

What I have I been doing watching these videos on my phone all these years. Just listened on my studio headphone and 🤯

That little Spark has been the terror (and pleasure) of my bandmates for a few years. They call it the "bright light" pedal and boy can you tell when I stomp on it. Incredible volume boost without much coloring at all with either 6L6 or EL34 amps. A must for cutting though the mix for soloing or a quick fill. Hall of Fame is also a great pedal. Wish I still had mine - I think I need to reacquire. It's the best all-around reverb pedal for the price. Everything form TC Electronics is very very good, and not very expensive.

Honestly my first three pedal types were OD -> Delay -> Tremolo. Next three pedals? Mid-Humped OD, Phaser, Reverb. Current board is MXR-Phase90 -> TS-Mini -> BD-2 -> MXR-Carbon Copy->Strymon Flint. I use the Phase 90 before gain stages and I can dial-in a few different sounds with it. It is the most versatile, I can fake an auto-wah sound, a vibe-type sound and a fake leslie sound. The Carbon Copy with modulated repeats sounds a bit like a chorus without being over the top.

This is great! My first 3 pedals were... a RockTek Metal Worker, a Danelectro Fab Tone, and either a Boss DD3, or the Danelectro Cool Cat Chorus. I still have all of them. These two episodes have inspired me to "reset" my pedalboard and think about what effects are important to my "core tone". Thank a lot!

TC Electronic Spark Mini Booster It's Funny because My friend found one at a Pawn Shop and at the time I thought "Why"? Now I know it doesn't ALWAYS have to be Expensive to be useful. Thank You!

Really enjoyed these, sending them to a friend who wants to venture into pedals. My first pedals were drive pedals and I didn't understand them because I was expecting DS1 sounds from a TC mojomojo. Gain stages is an intimidating realm, I think a chorus should have been my ideal first pedal.

The Go To drives on my board are the: Keeley D&M Drive in the 'middle' of the board, just before the Arion Tuner Wet/Dry Splitter. Last in the Drive Chain before the Mods and the Time Effects. (Dan- Level 9, Gain 10, Tone 12:30) (Mick- Tone 12:, Gain 2, Level 8:30) Greer Lightspeed (Loudness 1, Freq 12, Drive 1) into the ODR-1 (Drive 11, Spectrum 1, Level 1) Lightspeed on it's own gives a light breakup, ODR-1 on it's own give a mild crunch. Together they're into Lead Solo Drive territory. I've tried them ODR into Lightspeed, but I prefer the Mick side of the D&M for a coloured Boost. Alternative driven tones come from any of the above into the D&M. Special Drive tone is the D&M - Dan into Mick … ooh err

Obviously this video is not aimed at me but it’s always useful to go back to basics. With a small first board I tend to think about maximum versatility. So either two overdrives or a dual overdrive, multi effect for modulation duties then dedicated delay and reverb pedals, but all of this is a bit expensive. Therefore, initially a multi effects pedal is probably the best bet as it gives you a flavour of the sounds you like before paring it down to individual pedals.

I agree with this as far as looking for tones but if you want to progress your guitar playing I recommend swapping one of those for a looper as the last pedal in the chain. It will improve your playing and rhythm. Also fun to jam over clean progressions with a little drive and delay.

After several years of tinkering with various effects pedals I’ve finally got to a point where I’m happy with my set up: a TC Electronic Polytune 3 Mini, JHS Whitey Tighty compressor, MXR Timmy overdrive, One Control Dimension Blue Monger chorus and a MXR Carbon Copy Mini analog delay. These are all mini pedals powered by a MXR Mini ISO Brick power supply attached to the underneath of a board that is 40cm/15” long and weighs hardly anything. I could just about squeeze in another gain stage, but am unsure whether I should get a clean boost or another overdrive like the Wampler Mini Tumnus. At the moment I’m just using the volume knob on my Telecaster. Playing into a Fender ‘68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb, with built in tremolo that is always on a little bit. A relatively simple and affordable rig that sounds great mic’d up through the PA at gigs.

My first pedal was a second hand Boss BE-5. Boss's first multi pedal pedal. CS1 Compressor then blendable parallel OD1 and DS1, Noise gate, CH1 chorus and DD1 delay..ay..ay. All on the same circuit board in a black plastic box with four black plastic pedals on it. The controls are on tiny pots directly mounted onto the board. I didn't think it would last too long, being plastic, but, being a Boss product, it worked for 20 years and now needs the capacitors replacing because they have dried out. The case and controls are well gigged but still solid! You have reminded me just how much fun you can have with this level of kit. I may even get the soldering iron out for a cap marathon... My first and current chorus pedal is a CE-2W probably a bit advanced as a first chorus pedal but it sounds incredible, been obsessed with all things pedal related the past 2 years wish I’d gotten started sooner but really enjoy experimenting with different sounds. I wish my income could keep up with my pedal obsession 😂 love these videos and the challenge videos you guys do! 🎸

Great entertainment and educational as always! I like how you both started building your sounds from the time based stuff back to the gain stages. I havent realised before that I tend to do it the other way round but it makes way more sense to start with the sound of the room or space first 🤦‍♂️ My first 3 pedals, back in 1994!, were a Boss Blues Driver, a CE-3 and a DD-2!!

Magic wee piece Dan with the swells towards the end! Very cool :)

I have the Fender Pour-Over Envelope Filter and I love it. Even if you dial in a sound that's less obvious, it adds to the overall tone in a way that I like a lot.

A small amp I bought in 1981 (& still have) had both reverb & tremolo and two channels - but no drive. When I got a 12" combo with great drive channel I missed the tremolo until I set up for wet/dry with another small amp which has a drive channel. The TS-808 and Ross compressor combo brought a better drive sound to the driveless amp but the two speakers made up for that with the additional room filling and clarity. Today I favor two slightly larger amps and a small pedal board supporting wet/dry. Two 10" combos sound far better than my, more expensive, 12' alone.

Been loving these episodes chaps, it's always good to go back to basics every once in awhile. Keep up the amazing content, you're ju favourite channel on YT!

My first pedal was the Marshall guvnor. Had it over 20years but only recently started to appreciate it properly. I was using it wrong trying to add more to a max gained amp. Next was a Morley Wah. Which broke and eventually replaced by a Zakk Wylde Wah. Then added a Zakk Wylde Chorus (which got lost). Now I have my guitar in to my Wah - guvnor - Rat (which I fell in love with after your vid on rats) - big muff nano and then finally RC1 looper. I love all my pedals. I run the gain quite low on all of them. I’ll often have the guvnor and rat on together, but adding the muff as well gets way too much unless you turn the guitar right down till it just kicks in. Think a chorus, delay and reverb are going on my Christmas list. Keep doing what you do guys. It’s through watching your guys that I’ve finally started to learn how to use my pedals properly. Ratchet than just max them out and get a horrible mushy intangible noise. Lol

I have the Vent Micro. If you turn the speed and blend down, you get a nice faux chorus/vibrato. Best of both worlds.

Saw you guys last night and it was an incredible show! Such incredible musicality and stage presence!

Re: Fuzz being that dreadful mess. I was squarely in that camp and yet decided to try an EHX Octavix. Then added a Deluxe Big Muff Pi with expression pedal. And now I really think I want to get an EarthQuaker Devices Hizumitas fuzz. I think the lesson here is that if we open ourselves up to trying something we think we don't like, we may just find ourselves to be surprised. I _hated_ fuzz right up till I had one on my board.

My 6 pedals in the chain, after guitar (considering I own 11 effects), Big Muff Triangle, LovePedal TChula, Nobles ODR-1, TC Zeus Drive (all run on 9-volt carbon batteries), Cali76 Compressor, and MXR Analog Chorus (which I dial very subtle modulation, and use the dual output, Mono into amp left speaker & Thru Signal into my other 4 effect pedals which goes into right amp speaker).

To reiterate my comment from the previous video, my first three pedals were: MXR Distortion + Peavey CMC-1 Chorus Dunlop Crybaby Wah-Wah They served me very well for quite a long time. For the sake of this video, I'll name the three main pedals I was after to expand my sonic possibilities, as I actually bought a lot more than three pedals in a single purchase. The three pedals were: MXR ZW90 Wylde Phase 90 MXR M169 Carbon Copy Analog Delay MXR M159 Stereo Tremolo With those six pedals, and my Fender Hot Rod Deville 212, I can get 90% of the most common sounds.

I don't even play guitar, but enjoyed these two videos immensely!

ALTERNATIVES: MUCH Prefer the full size Spark for not much more money- (only $69) takes a battery, has 4 knobs- bass, treble, gain .volume- plus 3-way toggle - fully transparent+= MUCH better. For Klon clone I've got a Soul Food JHS Meat Mod, which will do the Tumnus plus more (If you ca find one). I A/B'd against the Tumnus Deluxe and returned the Tumnus. That Beetronics is cool enough for the paint job alone! (and what a sound-!) For modulation you can't beat the NUX Mod Core for the money- AND it's full stereo in/out, takes battery, excellent mod sounds. Rotary is on the mod core, but for a dedicated rotary Lex (stereo in/out) or Tech 21 Roto Choir (stereo in/out)-- Stereo rotary is a must for me, gives you 3D rotary like the real thing. Reverb alternative I'd go Biyang Triverb, inexpensive, great quality, stereo in/out, under $50 new.

As for your previous week show, I have been playing guitar for 35 years now, I have never owned a tremolo pedal. I would have suggested a reverb pedal if someone's amp doesn't have it built in, or a chorus pedal.

Props to you for rocking the OD20 for so long! The court of popular opinion went to the extreme of “if it’s not true-bypass it sucks!” for like a decade after the DD20 was released. It wasn’t until the likes of JHS and other knowledgeable sources showed the world how it could shine. I too bought the DD20 when it was relatively new and have loved it since, even when my friends moved on to Strymon & the like.

The small board i keep plugged in all the time is: Boss OS-2--Bluesdriver--Eleclady--TC tremolo--Carbon Copy deluxe--HOF2. Basically the exact board you guys built but with a flanger instead of chorus. Guess I'm not as dumb as i thought.

Great episodes and sounds as always! Two more suggestions from me: If you play alone, get a looper. If you don't play alone, get a tuner pedal.

I have tons of pedals but my favorite pedalboard consists of a Chicago Stompworks Blooze Maker, a very early version of the CMATmods Butah, Aqua Puss, El Capistan and Lovepedal JTM. I can coax just about anything I want out of that pedalboard. I had a sound in my head forever and accidentally stumbled onto it with that setup.

As a longtime fan of That Pedal Show, my small board with seven pedals is almost the same. My bonus pedal is the TC Electronic Ditto Looper. I have a ODR Mini, but an SP Compressor instead of the Tumnus; although, my JHS Tidewater Tremolo has a level boost that I like to use as, well, a boost. Now, I’m going to try moving the tremolo to the slot before reverb. Thanks!

Great video chaps! For anyone going through this process, I'd like to suggest taking a look at the Keeley Eccos as a potential delay. Not only is it an amazing sounding delay, but also a great looper pedal to practice playing with/over rhythm playing backing tracks. It also has stereo out so you can run two amps if you have them!

My 6 must-have effects are: Zendrive, Klon klone {current fav is Nux Horseman but GASing for the Mythos Mjolnir), Xotic SL Drive, Big Muff, Uni-Vibe and Boss DM-2W analog delay. My Carr Mercury has the most delicious spring reverb so I'm covered in that department.

I really love your show and this episode was amazing and fun, I have been used 6 pedals for the last 4 years (2 mods, 2 gains, 1 delay and a wah) and I'm really happy with the results.

Definitely OD, EQ, and Reverb first for me. Then delay, compressor, and modulation. OD is a rabbit hole though. I have dozens of OD pedals, but only 1-2 of any other types of pedals.

My main choice for wobble is the uVent 122. I love that it's not traditional chorus, flanger, or phasing. But I agree that the chorus pedal is probably the place to begin a qobbly journey. Rock on, gentlemen!

Great Video, the 2 drives 2 Mods & 2 Time based pedals is a great setup. On my board I just added a Tuner and its ready to do any gig. Got a Expresso Fx Germanium Fuzz, DS Custom Audio Rangemaster, Past FX Chorus Ensemble splitting into 2 amps, then on the wet side Jam Pedals Delay LLama Extreme , Source audio Ventris and the Harmonous monk great sounds :) love your show D&M

This is awesome. I have 3 of those pedals on my simple “go to jam” board. The 3 series (set on analogue), TR2, HOF2, The others are Morning Glory V4, and walrus Julia for the added vibrato or mix.

Lol sizzly nice stuff on pos 2 and 4….click…”ahhhhh”. Heavenly goodness. You guys rock.

Forgive any tone of pretense, but even though I may not need a video like this, I still gain from it. There is something to reminding yourself of fundamental things... "Oh, yes... that is why I chose that or passed on that." Played for decades, late to pedals... Appreciate this kind of thing a lot. Even as review.

Tremolo as it is with an amp peeked my interest. I run a board which is drives and compressors in a switcher... Wah in front. To a Rack Pre with an effects loop. Rack Multi inserted. Then out to some crazy (Filter Pro and Lexicon Vortex) Finally Delay (TL) and Reverb (BS). 50W Marshall and if I'm feeling indulgence a little Fender or JC120 as a Stereo Rig Sooooo, my Tremolo is Pre the TimeLine. I've spent untold hours re configuring this rig and landed here. My reasoning in the end (after ears..) Is to treat the Delay more as a studio mix and sync the time to the tremolo.

This kind of logic got me from my first 3 to 80+ and counting !

I recommend the UAFX Dream '65 pedal, If you dont have a Fender deluxe reverb Amp already - it sounds amazing !

I would advise against getting a compressor early on only because it could hold you back in terms of learning to play into gain/volume. Knowing how to dig in and get natural sustain is tricky with a comp on.

There are so many genres of music that really benefit from compressors early on. Not everyone’s playing blues licks through a tube screamer, Alan

When I returned to guitar about 10 years ago, I got the TC flashback and hall of fame as a relatively inexpensive way to to get a lot of different sounds so I could derive what was really what I wanted to be hearing all of the time. Years passed, Christmas comes, goes, and now the end of my loop section of my board is a belle epoch deluxe into an echorec into a strymon blue sky. End game time effects for me. I'm done. Catalinbread's delays are just insane, and Strymon... is Strymon. :)

As always, love your videos. So much useful info here. Can I make a suggestion? How about a "how to get that tone" show the features 10 or so song setups. For example: "Here's the settings for a decent Come As You Are tone" but play as little as possible of the actual song to avoid the copyright police, and then move on to "Here's the Bridge of Sighs tone", etc. All using you basic 4-5 pedals that you have on your minimal board. Makes for creative uses of the incorrect effect to get close to the tone (chorus for Leslie, Vibe for UniVibe, Delay for Room reverb, etc.). Or go all out and have the real effects for the exact tone.

I’ve got two boards. One has 5 gain stages, chorus, reverb, and a super delay. The other is a tuner, two gain stages and an analog delay. Board 1 is for fun experimentation with sounds. Oddly, board 2 is way more useful in 90% of cases.

Great info and knowledge sharing as always! I know you’ve talked about power sources multiple times in the past, but it might be a good add on to this video as I went through several sources after extending beyond 3 pedals before I found one you you and others recommended that worked for me!

Fuzz is a dreadful mess that makes me one with my guitar. I'm using majestic copy of maestro brass master from Ian Rider and I'm literally crying when playing it. It's delightful roaring underworld monster of a sound... And I find myself loving fuzz because of you guys. Thank you!

If I wanted a versatile board my choices would come down to something that could cover a lot of ground. First 3 choices would be: 1. Some amp-like overdrive with boost like Zvex Box of rock or similar (to have a solo boost included) 2. Some multieffect modulation pedal like TC Electronic Dreamscape or similar 3. Some versatile delay pedal like TC Flashback delay or maybe Source Audio Collider with delay and reverb at the same time Next 3 would probably be: 4. Some mid pushed overdrive like tube screamer or a version of klon 5. Wah - to cover funk and add another flavour 6. Reverb like TC's HOF (if it wasn't included in delay) or alternatively an octave pedal like Pitchfork or Sub'n'up After all these, next ones would be: 7. EQ to be able to shape the tone for different amps 8. Fuzz to add another flavour 9. A tuner pedal With this, it seems like the board would be more-less complete with option to switch some of the effects with better alternatives

Instead of ODR-1 and Tumnus I would rather have D&M Drive. One pedal, same options, takes less space on board. As always, great sounds, great show! You guys rock!
