Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone Guitar Rig Challenge: Dan vs Mick - That Pedal Show

Музыка

He chooses an unfamiliar rig for me, I choose one for him… now let’s make some songs and music videos!
Life too short for long KZread videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Comfort Zones. Hmmm. Dan and I often get accused of being in our own ‘comfort zones’ fairly regularly on this show. That’s to say being in a place of over-familiarity and complacency with the kind of gear we use and the noises we make. What this means in may peoples’ opinions is that creativity and experimentation are inhibited. For the record, neither of us really feels like that at all - it’s hard enough finding time to be in //any// musical zone, let along a comfortable one! - but in the interests of at least addressing the question, we decided to give ourselves a challenge. Woop!
Thusly, in this episode Dan and I choose rigs for one another to deliberately move us away from our perceived comfort zones. We start by feeling out the choices as a first impression, before heading off to each make music tracks and, erm, videos.
Some viewers may wish the choices were more ‘extreme’. For sure all the gear here is within the collective comfort zone of TPS as a whole. One step at a time, perhaps.
Enjoy the episode!

I'm the person who never leaves comments on anything because I rarely see genuine humanity in action...people who care about each other and their success (especially on social media). Dan and Mick, you made choices based on your personal knowledge of each other and set each other up for success. Contrary to public tendencies, you made the show without competition. The results of your efforts and the effect of your show on me (and countless others) was profound. You didn't sell me on any products. You sold me on your character. Thank you.

Astounding! I have too many good things to say about this, but I'll try to keep this short. Insert all of the impressed, parentally inappropriate exclamations here... I am a longtime viewer and have been very impressed over the years, consistently inspired and, much like an essence of this video, creatively pushed by you guys, the show, the various approaches to subjects, etc... ...but THIS show - seriously epic and INCREDIBLY INSPIRING! I was blown AWAY by Dan's song, all of the things he did with the sound, the effects, amd the music. He was very self effacing, but that was excellent. Plus tge trippiness, the way the song moved along into its various parts - way, WAY better than the "spanking" he self described at the end (though if it were me, i would've said the exact same thing, so there's a huge grain of salt, lol). Now Mick (and Katherine for her cinematography), went so NEXT LEVEL... I am gobsmacked. Talk about inspiring. Like Dan said, I love seeing how Mick really rises to the occasion, and does something incredible. Seriously, the video aspect of that song was outstanding, especially with the minimal time spent - imagine the task of creating that exact video 25 years ago, amd what a huge production that would've been... I also really liked the visual images of Mick with his hands over his face. That, especially repeated as it is, with the falling on the ground, leaning/pounding against the corner/wall and the vibe, really creates an emotional reaction that seems (to me at least) to address sadness, depression, frustration, and struggle - now THAT to me, was what it took the song to an absolutely higher level, and prompted so many moments of feeling blown away. I have much more praise - the IDEA of the show was great - the RESULTS were outstanding! This going to be a great weekend, I have long been a fan of pushing my own music out of my comfort zone, and I think having some restrictions like the basic length of the song, making a video, etc, REALLY help nudge the process towards yeilding great reaults! I am so grateful for not just Dan and Mick, but every single one of you involved. Congratulations both of you on outstanding results!

Patrick, thanks man. Mick here. That the videos drew an emotional reaction from you is so great to hear. At the end of the day that’s what we’re here for - to try and convey that emotion in creativity is really central to music and guitar. We don’t always manage it, but it’s ultimately what drives this whole circus. ;0) And thank you for getting the depression thing. Obviously that is what it’s about and I’m glad that came across. Best to you sir!

@@ThatPedalShow The more i watch these, the more I find I hope you guys release both just as the individual videos, maybe in a week, or as a Christmas gift, around the holidays. I would only repeat myself in how genuinely impressed I am. They're both outstanding in different ways. It would be cool to share the videos, and get my non pedal nerd friends to see/hear these By the way Mick, as someone who has been recording and mixing since the 80's, 2 audio engineering degrees, blah, blah, blah, I commend you on your MIX. With those elements, you could remix that until you're blue in the face, sure maybe make it sound "better" (by SOME standards), but the way you mixed it, again, the EMOTION came through, and any person mixing it should be pursuing that very thing you achieved to great effect, in my genuine opinion, subtracting my TPS fan-brain. Seriously, solid. Soundgarden, I think, is the part you were wondering about, BUT what they did with it, and what YOU did with it - so good, and their own thing in the respective songs. Also, the silliness and off-the-cuff manner in which it began, I think is important, too. If you set out to be epic, it may be a long hill to climb. Taking a song that maybe had more "humble beginnings", and finding the "epic nature" in even a "silly" song, can transform it, creating a bit of synergy.

  • @ErikFritz

That was absolutely awesome! I also think there's a real lesson about the creative power that comes with not taking yourself, or what you're doing, too seriously. I know I suffer from that - this idea that what I'm doing is important/meaningful and that it has to be "good" - but again and again the best creative experiences seem to happen when I let that go and just give myself permission to be a little silly. Yet, somehow, I keep needing to relearn that lesson. We should all get "a bit carried away" more often. Thank you both for the refresher!

So a friend of mine linked this, never seen you before. I know almost nothing about this and I know this isn't really for me (yet). But I have to say, this was AWESOME. I love seeing people take that flying leap to play with something unfamiliar and let creativity drive draw outside the lines. Give yourself more credit Dan, that was great music, Mick just did a bit more post production, and seemed a bit more loose with the setup. But honestly I'm glad he did because he had a totally new concept to work with that Blooper and when you go that far... I know that rabbit hole. And best of all he worked with it from many angles since it was messing with him so much. When I end up working with a musician again I'm probably going to bring up that Rooms(and probably this video). Keep being awesome and thanks for an interesting and entertaining hour. And if the rest of your videos are like this, I can imagine it's a great service, cause I look at these boards with wonder, "How do you know what sound you'll get from this?" Well if someone has a video like this you can find out and makes it a lot more approachable. You guys rock.
