Full Gymcastic Interview • McKayla Maroney - GymC...
At the 2013 World Championships, McKayla Maroney failed to qualify for the floor final due to receiving an overtime deduction.
During the qualification round, the American gymnast exceeded the 90-second limit by one second and endured a 1-tenth penalty from the Time Judge.
Had she not received this deduction, she would've placed ahead of teammate Kyla Ross and therefore advanced to the final.

@@Appaddict01 It was not? Simone, Mai, Larisa, Sandra, Vanessa, and obviously McKayla were all in contention for medals. Simone was the favorite for gold and barring major mistake would get gold. The timer doesn't start when the music does. They start the timer once the gymnast starts moving; McKayla even acknowledged "...or, I started my pose too early." So, it sucks a LOT, but it wasn't like she got screwed over. She just moved too soon, and her time started a second earlier than she should have.

Did you know that Martha Karolyi didn't utilize one of the spots at these Worlds so McKayla could compete all-around? And in typical Martha Fashion, this wasn't announced ahead of time. This is my understanding-someone else will likely know more(I'm still new-ish & figuring it all out). At the time, you could only challenge D score. Today, you can challenge more(like time). Her coaches are still upset over that 1sec too!! However they are huge proponents of "that's the breaks, accept it & move on"....& "sometimes it's 0.1 in your favor, sometimes it's 0.1 against you, it happens, we try our best & can only do what we can do" That mentality is instilled from young, judges can definitely be unpredictable sometimes!! Think that's why it confuses me so much, so much is subjective from judge to judge(&I definitely can't watch college gymnastics if I'm trying to understand-lol)

I could not find them online. I found the men's, but could not find the women's. However I would not be shocked to find out that there was some personal bias 🤷🏻‍♀️ Anyone who has been around/seen judging for this sport knows that it happens often. I have such mixed feelings about AI judging, I have seen my kid get a 9.95 that she didn't really deserve(more like 9.7/9.8)& I've seen her get a 9.2/9.4 when she deserved a 9 6/9.8. Seems all judges can find a way to score 0.5 up or down in every routine for every gymnast 🤷🏻‍♀️ The receiving end sure does feel great, the other side, not so much!! The downside of AI would be no allowances for anything. Expecting computer "perfecfion" from human athletes. Guess the best would be a hybrid model? Getting an AI score as a base & averaging it with a human based score 🤷🏻‍♀️
