I think there's a difficult and fine line between trying too much and being a weirdo-awkward-creep. I could stop trying to be friendly and kind and respond appropriately to people at work, or I could stop giving a single about their views on me, eventually earning me a reputation of a total weirdo and getting me fired. I prefer staying employed and generally very well-liked.

The irony is that Mitchell's character has the real people skills because he assertively tells it like it is and so actually helps the Webb-guy. Even though it's a bit confrontational, it's still said without rancour, with a cherry-on-top-agree-to-go-their-separate-ways ending.

It's worse when they hug you and you barely know them. I barely even hug my friends and family. I usually just give a half hug when I'm not feeling so huggy just so I dom't hurt their feelings. I'm only really comfortable with hugs that I initiate. I've had 2 practically strangers in my life hug me and I froze completely. One was just unexpected (I think it was part of a dare or something). the other was a manager at a place I was volunteering at. I was having issues with her and to start over she gave me a hug and I wanted to say no but I couldn't choke it out and basically remained frozen and I was given the most uncomfortable and scary hug of my life... she wasn't scary. I just felt scared in the hug.

I think some people see it as 'charisma'. Maybe they're all aspiring to behave the same way, but haven't got the language down yet, so they look up to this person's 'confidence'. Then if you say "doesn't that person seem a bit fake to you?", everybody glares at you and thinks you're just jealous because that other person is so much better at people skills than you. So your only option when other people praise this individual is to agree and say "yes, they're so friendly and charasmatic!", just so you don't come across as bitter. Sigh.

Love this comment and completely agree. Most people prefer to be lead rather than stand out. They prefer to be part of the crowd and latch on to anyone who even vaguely demonstrates control. Like you, it just seems so obvious to me that certain people are merely acting the part and I’m baffled how people seem to fall for the obvious charade.

Roger Froger Let's not call people pathetic. They are just trying to fit in. Although I agree with you. In social situations there have been instances where I've met a few people who, like me, don't mind being silent for a while or just observe the game, or whatever we were doing but feel the social pressure to keep talking and to keep socializing (I can almost see it weigh on them, and on me quite often). It's just weird, dealing with people.

I don't understand why there are all these Quora answers telling people that it's a Pyschological Fact that other people will warm to you more if you touch their arm and use their name a lot. I _hate_ people using my name a lot, or even more than once or twice, and I'm not keen on being touched, either, unless it's by a beautiful woman.

@@pineapplepenumbra Lazy social proof. Some publication of no merit has quoted another publication which the audience for the no merit publication haven't read. The artical in the journal is locked behind a pay wall as are peer reviews in other journal publications. Therefore ignorant people quoting ignorant people who either misunderstand a journal or quote something already debunked. Not at one point has the person thought "if this is important enough for me to insist on my position I should read the actual study and the peer reviews then link directly to them with supporting quotes which I should type out for the benefit of the people I am informing, as they may not be able to pay for the peer review and original artical access." No one does this as they dont have the spare money, time or inclination. The aduience they are debating with doesnt care to do that either or just ignores the proof favouring their own opinion (backfire effect) and everyone in the debate thinks they are smart enough to take part overestimating their own competence and the quality of the debate and debators. (Dunning Krugar Effect). This results in a distillation of two sides who argue with each other and have no merit. The two seperate groups go their own way. Both groups jerk themselves off for having the same opinion as everyone else in the group and start arguing with everyone they meet in person or online when the topic is raised. This is why some ignorant person posts online and tries to get likes from their social circle of likeminded friends. Resulting in sharing through the network and two uninformed opinions going viral. People start arguing over these positions, nothing but social unrest forms, the issue is never resolved. Except in the accademic text which everyone ignores when its actually pointed out, as the discenting view is always quoted when it favours the opinion of the unimportant prat who is arguing for the oposit of reality and finds disgruntled people to agree with them.

@@gm2407 I agree. Journalists should, of course, have the resources afforded to them to go behind the paywall and then, as you say, quote the links to the relevant articles/research and the relevant parts of the relevant articles/research, in order to be taken seriously. I've lost count of the number of times I've posted "Dunning-Kruger strikes again" when reading posts from people who seem to believe that everyone else they are talking to is stupid or uninformed, while blatantly displaying their own ignorance or stupidity.

It works because Webb is a natural cast for an antisocial person. ;) Now, serial killers, that's totally different. There's probably a good body of evidence that they are exceptionally great at winning the confidence of their victims. So they're likely brilliant people persons, all the way until seconds before the stabbings.

@PaddyMacNasty I'm already familiar with Reginald D. Hunter and Rich Hall. Both clever comedians, although Rich Hall has been around much longer (I remember him back when he worked in the United States in the 80s). Reginald's bit about the English not being particularly good at racism is quite amusing, as well as how he handled himself in Would I Lie To You when he had to convince people that the D stood for Delicious.
