The Japanese word (魔人 Majin) that was translated here as Devil (or Warlock) is a gender-neutral equivalent of Witch (魔女 Majo). So Hector isn't part of a whole new group, just the 9th Deadly Sin representative to be introduced. And Ange is right, Vanity was grouped with Pride, and Melancholy with Sloth to give our present-day list of 7 Deadly Sins.

It's a mistranslation based on 魔神 being a homophone of 魔人. Considering that Petelgeuse has been consistently misspelled in S1's subs, the translator was definitively not given a written script and worked entirely by ear.

Really solid of you guys at catching the Roswaal/Subaru parallel of both being powerless people trying to save someone. Roswaal definitely sees alot of his previous self in Subaru. Young Roswaal's dynamic with Beatrice even looks alot like her and Subaru's dynamic. The way they both bicker with each other and Subaru/Roswaal can be teasing or flirty with her. Really shows why Beatrice warmed up to Subaru very quickly. Even if she tries to hide it in her typical Beako fashion by insulting him.

Devil = warlock = witch. Hector is basically a witch(er) of Melancholy

Obligatory deadly sins history summary incoming: So originally there were 8 deadly sins: - Gluttony. - Fornication (lust). - Avarice (greed). - Sorrow (melancholy). - Discouragement (sloth). - Anger (wrath) - Vainglory (vanity). - Pride. Later on melancholy got enclosed into sloth, vanity into pride and a new sin was introduced: envy. Which takes us to the currently known 7 deadly sins. With this said, the show seems to use all of them rather than to go for one list or the other. You can also notice that all the different powers called "authorities" share some common traits, the most easily noticeable is that all of them have the name of one of these original and current deadly sins (authority of sloth, of wrath, of vanity, of envy...). All individuals that have one of said authorities receive some kind of special title by society like "Witch" or "Archbishop", well Hector here is also one of those and while the anime subs decided to translate his title as "Devil" it seems that the Light Novels (and I say it seems cause I'm an anime only and this is what I've heard from LN readers) actually call him "Warlock" as in male witch. Meaning Hector is actually a member of the Witches of Sin just like Echidna or Satella, but since witch is a "femenine" noun he is called warlock instead of witch.

If you listen back in the OVA when you hear someone speak out pucks contract as the screen goes black with text, you can hear a familiar voice. IMO this confirms Anges theory of pucks origin/contractor.

My accurate theory regarding "what happened to hector" The main principle behind the barrier is " according to ryuzu alma/blima in s2 if someone leaves the sanctuary especially Demi Humans . Their soul will be removed. So my theory(not have proof) Hector is Demi Human(Half human and Half Giant) Note Skemet is full Giant not full human . So by activating a barrier. Hector lost his soul. Then echinda transferred the Melancoly Witch factor into roswal. Thats why the way of speaking of roswal and hector is the same.

Tappei already confirmed that Roswal mimics his speech patterns on purpose not that it was something forced on him.

it's not 7 deadly sins, there are originally 9 - Melancholy and Vanity are the other two
