That Figure Skating Show’s thoughts on Kamila Valieva, Olympic drama in Beijing

Спорт

In this opinion video, Dylan and Asher speak their thoughts on the Kamila Valieva doping scandal at the Olympics in Beijing, not just as hosts of the show, but as figure skaters and coaches. Dylan looks back at his relationship with coaches and his time at Sochi 2014 and Asher talks about the responsibility being placed (or not being placed) on coaches Eteri Tutberidze and the World Anti-Doping Agency, amongst others. Plus they tackle the big question: Should Kamila Valieva be skating?

Raise the age limit to 17 for all senior figure skating competitions worldwide. Make the changes necessary for the future of the sport, investigate and punish the coaches and the team “doctor”, but don’t vent your anger on a 15-year-old. She is blameless in this.

ikr. kamila should not get backlash, shes still a kid. but eteri should be investigated and the team doctor and all those people behind the scenes. eteri should furthermore completely removed as a coach. she pushes their talents beyond the limits, with physical and mental abuse. she emotionally blackmails these girls and actively seperated them from their mother. these girls only last maximum 2 seasons and getting replaced after it because they have to retire even before they reach 18 years. imagine your body has to retire at such an early stage of your age from the sports you love just because of this abusive system with no limits. I would push for an age limit of 18 even, 18 is, when in most countries these people are deemed as adults.

It is a shame that you are throwing such accusations without even finding out the essence of the issue. Specifically for Valieva, she has passed at least 10 tests in the last 3 months, and all of them - except one - are absolutely clean. And in the only dirty test, so small a quantity of the substance was found that it is obvious that she did not even take a therapeutic dose of the drug. It can only be about accidental contamination - and not only of the athlete, but also contamination of the test. To make such a result with the meager amount of the drug found, it is enough just not to wash the test tube - and for some reason it seems to me that this is the question to the lab that had lost WADA accreditation for mistakes in screening tests in the past. Why people should trust them again after they violated time deadlines.

I've seen a lot of people expressing sympathy for the other athletes, both on social media and during broadcasts, for example Tara Lipinski, Johnny Wier , Ashley Wagner and Adam Rippon. I definitely feel heartbroken for the other competitors knowing that the field is likely not clean and that they will be deprived of a medal ceremony and the Olympic experience they deserve. However, I do personally think that the safeguarding and welfare of vulnerable minors should be front and centre of these conversations because this is a systemic issue in Russian skating (at a minimum - we've also seen major safeguarding issues in, for example, US and UK gymnastics) as Asher says. I think Dylan's point about the power dynamics at play is a very powerful one and how it would be for a child to be surrounded by adults intent on exploitation, even if she did know what she was taking. I don't know if she did. There is a precedent in sport for minors being doped without their knowledge.

But doping can’t be excused, can’t be encouraged, can’t be ignored. It is not caught all the time, so at least when it is caught, it has to be condemned very strongly. It is one of the few ways to deter others from doping. Imagine if all was kept behind the closed doors, her younger teammates may start taking this drug knowing that the consequences are minimal. In Russia it is very easy to procure this drug, or any drugs that you’d need a prescription for in the US.

This is the first Winter Olympics since I was little that I didn’t watch women’s figure skating. I was honestly on the fence about watching before the doping scandal due to the blatant disregard for young skaters’ well being. The doping scandal was just the nail in the coffin. I think every former skater can look back at some of the things that went on when we were skating and admit that there were many thing we would change if we could. I remember the judging controversies, the disordered eating, the overly competitive parents, and the coaches that sometimes pushed too hard. Even if we didn’t experience these ourselves we saw them happen. I think it is time for the ISU to step up and put a true effort into protecting the skaters. USA Gymnastics has shown it IS possible. Gymnastics is far from perfect these days but at least there is an attempt To protect their athletes after failing them so badly. As more and more of Tutberidze’s former students come forward the picture is becoming clearer and clearer, she does not care about her skaters past their ability to win. If you don’t care, of course you will dope them. She has a bunch of skaters in the wings to replace them with and once they are no longer competitive she doesn’t care what happens to them. Of the medication Kamila tested positive for only one was banned but ALL are concerning and potentially harmful to someone her age. It is very sad and I feel for Kamila. She has only done what those around her have advised, and at her age she doesn’t have the life experience needed to see the manipulation and ill intent of those around her. She thinks this is the only way to succeed when it is quite obvious that she is incredibly talented and would have a long career if trained in a way that doesn’t damage her body. Of all the people involve she is the biggest victim (and yes, I include the other competitors). Even if she is cleared, she will never be cleared in the court of public opinion. Given the life of Russian skaters, her Olympic career will always have a “*” next to it. People will always wonder. It is the coaches fault, it is the ROC’s fault, it is the ISU’s fault; yet the people who suffer are Kamila and the other skaters. I call on the ISU to do their own investigation into ALL the top coaches including but not limited to Tutberidze and those in her camp.

For as many years as Tutberidze’s girls dominate figure skating, they became pro in this field. And if they use doping I expect them to be pro in that as well. I find it quite strange that their biggest star is caught on doping on the Olympics… the day after team gold… And that this news were all over the media from day 1. Kamila Valieva skates more beautifully than anyone I've ever seen, but I agree that she should not be allowed to compete. That said, the ship of fairness sailed when biological men were allowed to compete in the women's competition. It's the equivalent of allowing someone who had doped their entire life - while their muscles (including their heart) were growing ; while their bones were growing - to compete against women who were not allowed the advantage of performance-enhancing drugs. I have nothing at all against transgenders. But allowing a biological male to compete in women's is absolute cheating. How do they not have a problem with that? When that is allowed, the concept of fairness already went out the window. The Olympics have been forever tarnished.

She said nothing of the sort. The point is that her grandpa uses those three medications and has been using them for years. So his system and his saliva is saturated with these medications which he needs to take three times daily. It is not hard to imagine that on Christmas an insignificant trace of her granpa's saliva, either through food or cutlery could have accidentally ended up in Kamila Valieva own digestive system. And it could well be that the medication was maliciously added during those long 45 days when it was held at the ITA labs to be analyzed to frame the Russian athlete and the team! So, before you judge, remember U.S. pairs skater Jessica Calalang, who tested positive last year for a banned stimulant during an event. She was temporarily suspended and lost her U.S. Figure Skating stipend, and she and her partner had to withdraw from the 2021 world championships. Calalang was eventually able to prove that her positive test result was due to accidental contamination through her makeup! Unlike US athlete Jessica Calalabg, Kamila Valieva NEVER tested positive during the Beijing Winter Olympics and her freak positive sample of the 25th December returned just a negligible trace of the banned heart medication which could not have given her any advantages anyway.

From my understanding, the sample was marked as non urgent and the labs had staffing issues due to the pandemic. That aside, I do agree that the timing of the results is fishy but it doesn’t mean the results aren’t accurate or there were any violations. Maybe I’m wrong here but that’s just my take. 2- her sample tested positive for tmz and 2 other drugs for heart conditions. Not sure what you mean by nothing was found when there was. You even admit to this in your point #5. 3- that’s the problem. The use of prohibited drugs was found and she wasn’t suspended. She should have been suspended. 4- tmz is banned as althletes have taken it in the past for performance enhancement purposes. Regardless, even if we were to argue that the drug doesn’t give any advantage, it’s banned. So don’t take it. There’s no excuse here. 5- the coaches and athletes need to request to have sample b tested. The athlete can even be there when sample b is tested. So the question is, why haven’t kamila and her team asked this yet? I don’t know the answer to this. 6- see point 1. I respect your level of dedication and love for the athletes and sport but my comments and opinions aren’t coming from a place of propaganda from media. The fact that she is a child who hasn't been protected and is in an abusive environment was not only acknowledged but it was applied in the way you gave your opinion. This is not only a Russian problem, it's not only even a figure skating problem, it's a societal problem with exploiting children and disposing of them when they've served their purpose. There has been such an unbalance in the way this issue has played out, with a lot more focus about figure skating and less about the fact that this is potentially a child abuse case that goes beyond Kamila. These kids are being put on beta blockers to prolong puberty so they look especially small for their age. They’re kids so they have no autonomy because they have to rely on the adults around them who can be abusive in the way Eteri clearly is, potentially drugging a child without her knowledge (this is not an isolated case, Kamila is one of many kids being given “vitamins” which are actually drugs). We don’t even know the future effects these drugs are going to have on these kids. I think it will be so if the IOC does not admit its mistakes and does not pay! Yes, Sally Jenkins is 100% right. (Sally Jenkins: The Kamila Valieva case is an indictment of the anti-doping system, not her) The Stockholm lab was already out of work in 2018 and they are again... The IOC, WADA, ISU will have to pay millions of money, moral compensation, for the damage they inflicted on Valieva and not only on her.

I just want to say a few words about banning Russian athletes…in figure skating specifically….without them there won’t be much left….Russia and Japan for men - those are the top countries to watch. In the USA, figure skating is kinda in the toilet right now… And in general, Russia is one of the top countries supplying elite athletes in many other disciplines as well…winning without having one of the top competitors compete is not winning. There is no doubt that if Russia is banned, international media will still follow Russian local figure skating competitions - cause that’s where all the action will be - both in juniors and seniors. Finally, as far as this medicine goes…that Kamila got caught with; have you noticed, how the media are barely discussing legal and medical/scientific issues in this case….all discussion is emotion-based; they are spinning their own narrative… If one does some research (and some papers touched upon this), this drug - although in theory can help with endurance - has not been really proven to do so. There are very few studies done on this drug and many experts (and I mean western experts) say it probably does not have a serious effect (but more studies need to be done to really know). It appears that western anti-dope agencies saw this medicine used in Eastern Europe a lot and decided that it must be helpful if the athletes are doing so well. This whole thing is more about politics than clean sport. And a viewer with some common sense, thinking clearly, will see through the whole situation.

If it wasn’t useful, athletes wouldn’t be using them, especially when the substance is banned. I love Russian figure skaters and I don’t think anybody has any issues with having them in the olympics (politics aside). The problem isn’t with Russians but with having athletes who have tested positive for doping compete at the olympics, regardless of their country of origin. Russia just happens to dope a lot and have shown to have systemic issues with doping. The IOC and CAS have continuously failed at resolving this underlining problem.

Especially in the men's skating as Nathan Chen of the US won gold. Clearly you just hate the USA. Personally I don't care who wins, I just want to see some integrity. Not seeing any of that when Russia is involved. So many scandals, treating young girls terribly so they can burnt out and retire by only 17. Replacing them with the next 12 year old. The things done just to win in the women's competition is sad.

Then the onus is on those who doped her and not on her. Some countries will do ANYTHING to win no matter how illegal!!! Also, I agree that the legal age should be brought up to 18 so that if/when people are doping they are fully responsible for it themselves! I think I am most upset by the practices of the training center where Kamala trains and where young girls are mistreated and abused just to win for a season , only to continue skating for a short period of time. The ice dancing performances on the other hand were outstanding. It seems most of the teams were older.....not children. I thought the artistry, and skills, and performances were fantastic. Maybe changing the minimum age for Olympic competition to 18 would level the playing field somewhat, especially for female skaters. Since doping seems to be easy to hide and very difficult to control......maybe it’s pointless to try to control it? The Olympics were originally just for amateurs, but with state supported athletes from many countries there were always “professional” athletes competing. But Kamala and the adults around her cheated, she shouldn’t be skating, this situation makes the various committees in your sport looks very weak....and the Olympics movement seem rather pointless. If you forgive Wariewa because you are "young" in this ruling, It sets a precedent that there is no problem if you are young. As a result, I think that younger people have less sense of crisis about doping. If there is a reaction of a prohibited drug for any reason, it should be suspended. "I love all of Kaori Sakamoto's freelancers. If everything was fair and clean, she was the Olympic Queen. There was 13-year old diver who won gold in Tokyo last year. Should we extend this raising the age limit to other sports as well?

where is her integrity and her empathy for her fellow sportsman? she should have removed herself to make it less about her and allow the spotlight to remain on the other athletes. yes she is 15 so she has plenty of time to get her act together....choose better coaches, label her grandpas meds better learn what other athletes seem to understand about what to put in your body and what not to. she obviously has talent and thats not going to go away, she just needs to get her priorities straight..maybe skate for a different country? one that respects the athlete and the sanctity of the olympics.

Her failed test was taken BEFORE the Olympics and could not affect her performance in Beijing. Moreover, the amount of detected substance was very little, and it could get there by chance. Russian coaches and doctors are competent, and they know exactly that any substance will be revealed. I wonder, do people really think that coaches are stupid enough to give drugs to a 15-year-old, especially taking into consideration the tremendous attention towards russian sport. What is more, isn't it strange that this test appeared AFTER her winning? I'm sure that it's a sort of misunderstanding or a political game. Whatever it is, it has broken a very talented girl who has put her back into figure skating. She deserves a medal. Authorities did what they wanted to do. Tragedy. I wish her to come over it and have a happy life.

It just feels like these entities, whether it's athletes, countries, teams, or/and coaches just keep trying to sneak their advantage by the rule the enforcers. If they get caught they learn, adjust, and make new attempts. They should ban the coaches and perhaps the whole team from the sport.

I'm beyond tired of hearing about her. We talk about her way too much, she needed to be sent home period. She has tainted the women's competition

For an Olympic games that people wanted to boycott I'm sure they are loving the fact that they have a scandal big enough to draw more attention to the games. I mean, what convenient timing for this story to come out.

If the Court of Arbitration for Sport allowed her to compete for fear of what damage that could do to a 15 year old, why allow 15 year olds to compete? Do they not think that this outcome has not damaged her?

I will not let those sore buzz spoil Kamila's best ever figure skating performance. Under this pressure, 15 years old Kamila is still the No.1 in short program. as adults, should you feel a little sorry for yourselves?

I wish the media and everyone wouldn't call it the Kamila Valieva doping scandal. It should be called the Eteri Tutberidze Doping Scandal or the 2022 Russian Federation Doping Scandal (since there are so many.) The poor girl will have her name associated with this terrible thing for life when it should be the adults and her federation who should be associated with it.
