I completely agree with if we can’t punish them for being too young, then why allow them to compete. In my opinion, they need to raise the age to 17 (I prefer 18 but I know 17 is already pushing it enough). I think gymnastics did something similar.

The ISU will do it to protect their own asses. They're the main responsible for this Valieva mess, because they overscored these Eteri girls and they overlooked their technical problems for years, allowing this method to become the standard to beat for everyone. They can't judge like that anymore, at least not without scrutiny, so how convenient is it to raise the age limit and mask everything up.

Therapist here. I think it’s going to be more traumatic for her to be allowed to skate and possibly stripped of her medal or not and be the scapegoat and target if so much anger and hurt feelings from everyone it has affected than her not being allowed to compete, coping with the pain and lesson of that and having a chance to redeem herself. What her team is doing now is hanging her out to dry and take the fall for their doping scheme. If she understands that, that’s really traumatizing and if she doesn’t and somehow believes that the world is out to get her and target her for no real reason that’s really traumatizing too. Every person that is supporting her being allowed to compete is knowingly or unknowingly actually supporting the most harmful outcome for her. The fact that her team, her coaches have gotten away with barely saying nothing (outside of Russia) let’s you know how much they care about protecting her. So she’s too young for a consequence but not too young to face this alone? How convenient. Shame on everyone involved in this mess.

Edit after the games were over: THIS PERSON IS RIGHT. KAMILA SHOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ALLOWED TO COMPETE FOR SURE. That was a traumatizing event for me after what happened to Sasha, Kamila, Anna and the Japanese girls, Kaori and Wakaba. I can't imagine how they feel. Sasha had an outburst for getting silver. Anna's gold win was not celebrated nor supported. Kamila had a bad program which some are saying intentional to allow others to medal or because she's actually broken by everything. The Japanese girls were underscored. The only good thing that happened was Kaori and Wakaba hugging to celebrate Kaori's win. I don't even know what to think, I feel so bad for Kamila, I think I can't watch any reruns nor performance for a while. I actually think Anna, Kaori and Sasha were worth gold for different reasons. It's unfortunate that it's come to this. If someone sabotaged Kamila or forced her to sabotage her performance, I hope they'll pay for it. The Olympics deserved to see Kamila's beautiful skating if she's innocent. This is new perspective, thanks for this. I actually thought it'd be better to let her skate but not get any medal to honour her hardwork in the name of sportmanship. But I see how that might not be good according to your reasoning.

Thank you for that! I really appreciate your comment. I really feel Kamila is being set up to take the fall as the scapegoat for the federation. If her team stepped up and took responsibility that would allow her to redeem herself but what they’re doing to her, I mean having her make a statement that she accidentally took her grandfathers medication when it has now been revealed that she had 3 substances in her system and doctors are commenting how ridiculous that is, is super cruel! They’re forcing this girl to cover up and lie with a ridiculous lie which will only fuel more anger towards her. It’s so sad and disturbing how this is being handled 🙁

As it is, she will at least have the chance of returning to some kind of future in her home country. Even if they eventually strip her of the medal, there’s no denying the reality of what Kamila accomplished on Olympic ice and she will always have that memory (and all the KZread clips) for the rest of her life. All the memories, all the glory - she was marvelously at the Team event) but her health, especially the mental one, should come FIRST, before ANY dream. If it were me, I would have her fly home to her parents (hoping they would be supportive and helpful but I am rather suspicious of ANY parent whose child trains with ET) Having her train under ALL those cameras, PERFORM under even more scrutiny is simply way too much. No dream, no medal, no title is worth one's health, especially not a teenager's.

This is a difficult situation. The athlete is probably unaware of the drugs. Yet. rules are rules and they should not be broken....ever. Athletes have had medals taken away from them for taking cold medication for fk sakes. I believe it was the Romanian gymnast in Australia if i recall that had that happen to her. You want unfair... that's unfair. Now if the committee came forward with an explanation..... that offered up something like this as a reason for a test in december failing.... ok. then before she awarded a medal she should pass a test now. simple solution. For me, her performance was hard to watch. A lot of people were saying she’s a fighter and what she did yesterday in her SP was heroic but I didn’t see a fighter. I saw an exhausted child struggling to perform on ice and I’m saying this because I’ve seen her at other competitions and she’s never looked shaken up and vulnerable the way that she did at the Olympics. I think letting her compete is unfair for her as well as the other athletes. I agree with you 100% when you said ‘you’re supposed to protect the person not the athlete’. I know we all love a champion especially one that fights and overcomes obstacles but the idea of sacrificing a child to get one is disgusting to me.

However, there's clearly a lot of things wrong with Eteri's coaching system and with the Russian sports system as a whole (and apparently with the Olympic system as well, given their decision). It's also interesting how much the attitude differs in Russian and other countries' narratives. In Russia literally everyone admires Eteri, all the Russian comments under the videos of the girls skating praise her and give her the greatest accolades. While kamila is at the center of all this, can we just talk about an equally important form of harm being done to to other non ROC and most importantly, clean, athletes? It must be so frustrating to see entire moral codes and rules and judging scores being bent for a girl based on the federation behind her. Kaori, Wakaba and Young being lowballed to keep russians on the podium is so discouraging and unfair. These athletes have also sacrificed their bodies to strive towards goals that are ultimately futule because of corruption and blatant, undeserved favoritism for the russians. Even if kamila ends up winning gold and being stripped of her medal, the olympics is almsot all about spectacle, and since kamila is performing, it will be all anyone remembers, rather than the specifics of who placed what after the fact.

One thing everyone doesnt talk about tho : Kamila has been tested prior & during this game and she IS clean AT THE MOMENT. she was not clean dec 25th 2021, her russian natl title should be returned. But she is clean now so she should be allowed to complete for now or until future judgement. I really dont know what to think. Sports should be clean, she is clean now, but she wasnt. So…… Anyway lets see what happens tmrw, ice is slippery…… this whole thing is def effecting her skating, as the short program she did yesterday was 8 full points lower than her team competition performance from last week which was almpst flawless

@@fuckurbody The issue is that the drug she tested positive for is meant to help with the training, to increase endurance so you can do more run throughs and have the difficulty and consistency that the Eteri girls are known for. The fact that she's 'clean' now means nothing because she already benefited from the drug in her lead up to the Olympics. I think no matter what happens though the judges will give her that gold medal. Yes her score was lower than the team competition, but it was still 9+ points higher than Wakaba who had a clean performance with a 3A.

The damage has been done to Kamila - and probably to her heart as well. How can you allow a skater to compete after doping and not only that but also overscore her? What about the irrepareble damage done to other athletes who have to skate knowing all this? The same girls who have been breaking the bodies to "catch up" with the russian girls only to break their bodies? What about the physical and mental damage done to them? In truth non of the Eteri girls should be competing. You mean all three are under under the same coach but only one was ever doped? Dont joke. Yet here they are. If somehow Kamila cant skate clean in her free then probably they will put Anna there (and I am now side eyeing her ability to "pull through" when it mattered the most all the time) anyway, Kaori Waka Young top three

i think i need to start changing all my display names across the internet to your first sentence lmao. because while i have found plenty of reasonable people that agree and understand where i, and virtually all skating fans, are coming from, ive also come across (or rather they came across me, bc theyre leaving replies on my posts or comments) so many people that think me saying kamila is probably unaware of or uninvolved in being doped means that i want her to compete like normal and win gold and pretend none of this happened. or they think me saying that she should not be allowed to compete means i want her banned for life and that she, a 15 year old girl, personally sought out and acquired illegal drugs for her first olympics lmao. like no, i think she is a victim and her skating club are to blame, but that doesnt mean she can compete with the advantage thats been given to her that none of her competitors have. god i just wish more non skating fans would read and internalise comments like yours so they can understand that theres some goddamn nuance to the situation. but ive seen so much where the only two opinions (again, almost always by people that dont really understand the situation) are "she is a perfectly innocent angel that can never face a single consequence" or "she is an evil russian demon that needs to be sued and banned from the sport" (or the bonus russian take, "kamila is the best figure skater of all time and did not test positive for drugs and the world is out to get us") and the overscoring is what makes this all so bogus. why the hell does kamila need performance enhancers when she could go out there and do a somersault on the ice and the judges would give her three new WRs???? when have her scores EVER underperformed? literally had she never been doped, she would have handily won these olympics all on her own because eteri has the judges in her pocket. we've seen over and over that she can fall and slip and pre- and underrotate and still get sky high components. so why bother with all this and make it even clearer to the non-eteri girls that they are just not playing on a level field? its like it was just an extra twist of the knife for the fun of it. its insane. eteri is literally such a cartoonish villain that it would be hilarious if it wasnt hurting children. i also doubt that any of eteris students have always been clean and i just dont believe the scores in front of us anyway, so as far as im concerned wakaba, kaori, and young are my medalists as well.

I think WADA needs to remove the "protected person" provision to level the playing field including consequences. I think that if you are old enough to qualify for the Olympics, then you are old enough to be subject to the same rules and consequences. Another person I feel awful about? Vincent Zhao. I think she should be DQ, but what irks me the most is delay in sample testing. It should be tested immidiately, covid or no covid. She was already a big favourite for Euros and Olys, that sample was a priority. If there's really a 20 days time for the testing, she should be DQ from RusNats and maybe Euros, but after that time it was like an implicit permission to skate. What next, they will void skaters whole season because of some testing delay? Should skaters miss the comps because their sample is still in testing? So for me it would be most "fair" to not let Kamila skate during women event (because of test) but not void ROC medals in team (because by delaying the sample WADA allowed her to skate as a representative, and if the result were timely, she would be properly replaced. And her Olys results were clean).

@@ilyaorlovskiy The "RUSADA" statement reveals more than they think. The key words are "standard time frame". We are not in a standard time frame. We are in a time of COVID, exceptional times. If you want results back quickly, you mark as a priority. They know that, unless they did not want the results back quickly. IF they had come back quicker, then Kamila almost certainly would not have been permitted to go to the Olympics. If I were the Russian Fed I would have wanted her to go at all costs, she is the surest bet for an individual Figure Skating Gold (no Gold in Men's, No Gold in Ice Dance, and possibly the Chinese will get Gold in Pairs). With Anna and Sasha's unreliable quads, no one (not even the Empress, who I love and would have replaced Kamila) was a guarantee of a Gold like Kamila. Also noted is what they do not allege, They are not saying the test is a false positive, they are not saying it has been tampered with, they are not casting doubt on the methods of testing. I read they are saying it is her grandfather's medication and she sipped from his glass? Really, that is the worst excuse I have heard for a coated time delayed tablet?! Ashleys statement of "you should know what you take" is sadly deeply American. If anyone in the west thinks that in Russia you can actually say "No thanks, won't do that" then here is me bursting your bubble - you can't. The mentality is different, deeply different, and the notion of trusting your coach is so ingrained into this that doubting them would be seen as not being grateful. It is a state wide system and you as a child do not have the voice to go "nah, I will not". Mind you I am not endorsing this or agreeing, simply am fully aware of how this goes down and how little Kamila has had a say in this or well no say. You do as Eteri says. She tells you to jump and the only question you may ask is how high? I like what the Estonian girls coach said, yes I am shocked myself, but she stated that if there is a drug that makes you do quads then she herself would take it. One thing we miss in this narrative is that Kamila is a very talented girl, flexible and able to mastered the quad, who did not have a say in any of this. Kamilas international career is over, so much is clear. I already see people referring to her as "the doping girl". Everything she can do will forever be buried under this. Not to mention what the other athletes must feel? They do so much, risk their health to catch up and now they were told "cute, but nothing you do matters". That is the deep harm truly done since what is the motivation now to stay clean, skate clean, know your technique and artistry? Nothing.

I don't blame the lab for a second. RUSADA failed to mark her test as priority as they were supposed to do for anyone who was going to the olympics causing the delay they themselves are using as a defence. This isn't even the only sketchy Russian test result of the games. Canada is not important in figure skating but we're stupid important in Women's Hockey- and when we threatened to pull out of the game against the ROC because they couldn't provide clean covid tests the IOC delayed the game for an hour (unheard of at the olympics) and had everyone agree to play the entire game in KN95 masks - until maraciously the ROC got their clean covid test back just before the third period so they could play without masks (which Canada wisely did not)... only to discover after the game that amazingly one player had test positive for covid (making it 8 players) and they just hadn't noticed until after the game. It's amazing how frequently the ROC only discovers results after events.

After the expiration of the international standard, the laboratory informed the agency of delays in testing and reporting by the laboratory due to another wave of COVID-19, an increase in the incidence among laboratory staff and quarantine rules. At the same time, in its messages, the laboratory indicated the deadlines for the availability of the analysis results, allowing to receive information from the laboratory until the end of January 2022, that is, before the start of the Olympic Games in Beijing. Also, in January, the laboratory informed that the analysis would be performed as a priority, however, an adverse analysis report was submitted on February 7, 2022".

I'd like to mention that it is not fully investigated yet what is the amount of banned substance (I've heard info about "traces of banned substance" which means along with many other clean tests that it could be an occasional admixture in any legal substance produced on the same pharmaceutical facilities. Also it could be (if other accompanied substances are found) a metabolite of a legal medication, that also appears in trace amounts (meaning its amount cannot influence anything in one's body)) So.. the idea of protected person includes that the mentioning of the name of the person is prohibited. Someone had broken the rule. It's illegal. He or she just had literally robbed Valieva of her good name, because the crowd will never considerate the details and circumstances, will never wait the full investigation, just roar "cheater!cheater!". I believe that all who take stolen uninvestigated facts for truth and speculate on them just follow that dishonest robber. I'd be happy to know the name of the person from WADA and IOC who did it and see him accused of 1)violating the rules 2)opening raw facts. I am looking forward for this and for the results of full investigation of Kamila's case.

As far as I know many skaters who never skated with Tutberitze have had even hip replacements - so that's *more* and way past just a serious injury point. Skaters like that existed ever since I myself started skating in 1992. It's a common injury in skating that occurs across different coaching approaches and teams so it's nothing new (not that I don't have sympathy for Usacheva nor anyone else with the injury or hip replacement due to injury) and it isn't unique to Eteri's girl(s). Friendly reminder that Nathan Chen is one such skater: "The injury Chen suffered on a failed quadruple jump attempt during Sunday’s exhibition gala after the U.S. Championships has required left hip surgery that will knock him out of both the world juniors and world championships in late March." in January 2016. Why is noone concerned about him and his hips? Why is (or was) noone criticizing his coach and their coaching method?

@@kiraem7535 Then why did Dena Lowry bring up the hip injury if not to exaggerate and paint Eteri and her method in an even more negative that is usually assumed and perceived light? Hence: "no wonder people would be more critical of her if any of her skaters were to suffer injuries.", my point exactly. ... // ..So perhaps the upcoming semi-rant isn't so much directed at you kiraem, but anyone who might be reading along. - I am Slovenian and was coached by a married Russian couple for 12 years, attended many skating camps including a couple of ISU ones with Victor Kudriavtsev, had choreographies done by his partner Marina and practiced/was coached by them and other top Russian coaches of the time in the late 90s. They were *all* strict, demanding and had high standards that us the skaters were attempting to meet - naturally some more successfully than others according to our talent and level of dedication. It was hard work, but everyone understood that's what it takes if one wants to launch themselves into the air to produce anything noteworthy. I don't understand why people have a problem with strictness and challenging skaters so they can overcome their bull**it perceived limitations and instead rise above? Sometimes that takes unconventional, anger-inducing methods. I cried out of frustration with myself, coaches and other skaters probably on a weekly basis, but that's what it took for me to get over my own limitations. Competitive sports is just very intense; even more so on an Olympic level. I am saying all of this as a person who had her fair share of injuries (lower back, landing foot knee, shin splints, and even won a national title in a juvenile cat. with a splint on one of my arms and no one was forcing me to compete - I wanted to) and I know for a fact that 90% of it was of psychological origin. /// People have a problem with Eteri mostly because she is exceptionally successful.

@@drsalka I don’t know why they commented that, I was only trying to explain the reasoning to their comment 🤷🏻‍♀️and I partially agree with your statements as I believe you must push yourself to the limits to become the best. However there is a limit to that. There is no point in pushing yourself so hard that you permanently damage your body and end up retiring from skating only as a child. This has happened to most, if not all of Eteris skaters, which is what people find a problem with. Eteri has brought a new era to women’s figure skating, where many young girls are now influenced to “jump as many quads as they can”. Now many of the best figure skaters in the world are teenagers who will retire by the time they are 18, and be replaced by younger skaters, which you can’t deny has been a common trend for a few years now. Many people speculate that the reason for such early retirement is because they are overworking their bodies, causing it permanent damage. It is nice that women’s figure skating is developing quite rapidly, but at what cost? Well this is just my opinion on the topic, as we both have very different views on the various methods used in figure skating.

I read that the reason why it took 6 weeks for the test to reach the public/IOC is because RUSADA didn't initially flag the test. There was some loophole that they could wait 6 weeks to report a positive doping test and they took advantage of it.

I am this close to reading into the whole legal situation. (I'm a law student, wow, I lasted 3 seconds without mentioning that) From a legal standpoint I am all for the protection of minors. I will not judge Valieva until the court has made a final decision which is probably going to take months. The entire debate about her is controlled by emotions and also national interests play into it. A lot of people want to raise the age limit for the Olympics to 18. Yet they do not take offense to the athletes under 18 from countries that have no chance to medal. That is - in my eyes - another sign that this debate it not completely fact-based. Somehow it is only a problem if minors can do things "adults" can't. Somehow they don't think this way in other sports. Americans went CRAZY over Chloe Kim during the last Olympics where she was only 17. If an age limit would be discussed, why should it only be applicable to figure skating. How would other sports be affected and what consequences would follow? Changing the rules just to account for one specific case could have a lot more consequences than first expected.

I personally don't see why an age limit can't only apply to figure skating (not that I necessarily think the age limit should be 18). I think it's more about the trend of these girls burning out really quickly (and, for some, retiring after bad injuries at young ages) which is something unsustainable for the sport. Like...figure skating, specifically. Another issue is the culture of child abuse enabled by the low age limit. I believe that in some other sports, 13-year-olds have competed at the Olympics, but it's not like 13-year-olds can compete in Olympic Figure Skating...so why can't the age limits be different between sports? As for the legal situation, as a fellow law student, I'm also for the protection of minors and I understand why CAS decided the way they did. However, I think that morally / emotionally, allowing Valieva to skate was like, the worst possible outcome. I'm not saying CAS should have decided differently, but yeah.

We protect minors in many circumstances and the Olympics should be on that list. No children allowed in the olympics- period. To expose children to abuse (either by coaches, parents, or social media claptrap) and to use children for our own entertainment is criminal. The Olympics must be for adults. Enough of this!

Your logic is flawed. Just because one sport raises the age to compete doesn’t mean all sports must do the same. In fact, in 1997, gymnastics raised its age to compete to 16 because young girls were destroying their bodies beyond belief - to the point where they were unable to physically compete in the next olympics because that’s how damaged their bodies were. I suggest you watch “What is Happening to Women’s Figure Skating | An Essay | Part 1” on KZread. It explains how figure skating prizes slim hips and small bodies, and young female skaters absolutely DESTROY their bodies trying to maintain such a physique while still being able to do these athletic feats. Many under-eat so they can avoid starting their period because they know once their hips start growing in, they can’t jump as high and rotate as much in the air. And when you forcibly stop your period your bones become extremely brittle. Making it more likely that you’ll break a bone. And fun fact, every single skater on the Russian team had broken their bone. The Russian coach weighs the female skaters everyday and they get punished for gaining even 1 pound because their coach thinks their jumps will be thrown off. So yeah, They should 100% raise the age for figure skating BECAUSE this sport absolutely preys on young girls. And these young girls pay with their bodies. Can you imagine winning gold but at the cost of your body having irreparable damage at the ripe age of 16???? Can you imagine the amount of physical abuse you have to put your body through for you to cap out of the sport at that young of an age??? This is literally the reason why gymnastics had to raise its age - young girls were destroying their bodies to maintain a competitive edge
