It also feels like Ilia Malinin is marking a brand new era. Him and Trusov really brought different vibes into figure skating. And I love it 🎉

The retirement doesn't surprise me, not because of his results, but because of his interviews this season and how he's talked about skating. He always talks about making Stephane happy, not so much skating for himself. But it absolutely is an end of an era.

So true, but somehow I thought (hopefully) that after worlds he might want to stay just one more season. But now i am actually quite happy for him. His programs this season were so beautiful and its a nice way to end a competitive career.

The retirement post on Insta definitely caught me off-guard, but I can't say I'm not surprised. Shoma Uno is definitely still competitive, but he's really won everything that he can besides the Olympics. Shoma Uno aged into seniors in 2015, a year after Sochi Olympics, which is honestly a huge detriment to age into seniors right after the close of the Olympic cycle. You get a lot more chances to compete in the Olympics if you age into the year of the Olympics (like Junhwan Cha or Yuma Kagiyama). He's done 2 Olympics and just short of three Olympic cycles which is a long career for a figure skater. Waiting two more years for another Olympics leaves the chance for more injuries and strain, but it's obvious he has a lot in life to look forward to (he's also RICH, he is set for life). Two years when all of your competitors you grew up with have retired, including you two biggest rivals, is a huge ask for him. I'm so glad he will get to move forward to new things, but I do hope he makes more KZread videos because they're always so fun to watch!

It's so hard seeing Shoma leave. He was there when I got into the sport, he was there at the shows, he was there at the worlds, at the Olympics. He was always there. And now he's not gonna be there. I'm gonna miss him so much

Shoma has been hinting at retirement all season so I don’t think any of the dedicated members of the Unoverse were really surprised by the announcement but alot of us, my self included, were still holding out hope that he'd stay around until Milan. Shoma is my favorite skater of all time, so while I'm devastated that he'll never compete again I'm at peace with the fact that he ended his career on his own terms and he seems very happy with the decision. I think a lot of skaters will hold out and compete the full Olympic cycle despite being physically and mentally checked out when maybe it would be wiser for them to retire. Also a quick fact check that Shoma did not go through multiple coaching changes. In fact, he was with his original coaches from when he first started skating to when they parted ways in 2019. He went to a camp with Tutberidze that Summer but no coaching relationship materialized. He did go coachless at the beginning of the 19/20 season but Lambiel became his head coach about halfway through that season.

I always liked Shoma. I know after the 2018 season when he went to team Tutberidze for 6 months he was traumatized to the point where he was eating and never leaving his room. Stephen for all his flaws as a skater was always a beautiful and fun skater to watch. He really bought out Shoma’s musicality and consistency following that. Unfortunately he was always in Yuzu’s shadow. While I always liked Shoma more, the media could never separate them. I am happy he was able to have 2 seasons with Shoma as Japan's top man and top man in the world. I am happy I saw the best short program of his career. I am sad he went out with a bad Free program. I was happy with the congratulations he sent to Yuma at the end. Shoma is one of the greatest male figure skaters of all time with the amount of titles and medals he has gotten over his long 21 year career. He will be missed but I hope he finds happiness no matter what he decides to do. He also is the most adorable Japanese man ever and he only gets cuter as he gets older

I like what you wrote, but one thing is simply false: He never went to Tutberidze for 6 months and was never really coached by this team. He had a tryout at this camp which lasted for about 3-4 weeks - not more not less than a tryout. He did not make any negative comment towards the team but simply stated that "this is not for him". Tutberidze's team would have loved to have him - some press releases by RusFed almost made it seem like a given that he would stay in Russia - and since this tryout not working in their favor Shoma gets offputting comments by Gleigkenkauz who portrayed Shoma as lazy. Please do not spread such false claims.

This broke my heart seeing Shoma retire. His skating is so beautiful

I think he trying to take a bow when his ovation is loudest. Good idea. When he decides to return, it will be on better terms, and if not, he retires at the best time.

When I woke up on Thursday, opened IG and the first thing I saw was Shoma smiling at me I was already like OH SHIT. Let‘s just say my day was ruined and I am so close to spending 300€ to go to Switzerland and watch the Champéry ice show with Stéphane and Shoma, ’cause I‘m scared he‘ll lock himself up in Japan and I‘ll never ever get to see him skating live T.T

But nonetheless not surprised at all since he's been hinting on it for two seasons now. I mean this man has achieved anything there is except for the olympic gold. And it wouldn't be worth it for him to train this hard for two more years, since Ilia, Adam and Yuma are the strong contenders for that Olympic podium. In order to compete with them, Shoma would have to focus on jumps again, which would go against his personal goals in the sport, risk injury and just wouldn't be worth it for another piece of metal. I'm glad that he's prioritizing his own ambitions beyond just medals and competitions but it obviously leaves a big hole in the single men category. Still nobody can quite captivate me as much as Shoma does and I'll miss him dearly in all the chaos. This is really the perfect ending for his career and I'm glad to see him go with a smile rather than injured or disappointed like others. I hope he'll elaborate on it more in the press conference and what he'll be up to besides appearing as a guest skater here and there but I highly doubt he'll make his own ice show.

With Shoma’s retirement there will definitely be a lack of gravitas in men’s skating. Ilia and Adam are very talented, but they both seem really interested in trying to one up each other on social media, which is not appealing to me. Yuma could get there with the gravitas, but he isn’t there yet. One thing I loved about Shoma is that he just went out and did his thing and didn’t seek out attention. I think we’re entering a new era in men’s skating where they go for being influencers as well as skaters. Best of luck to the men, but I’m not sure this era will be enjoyable for me.

As a shoma fan following his career closely I think it’s funny how a lot of people are surprised by the retirement. We’ve been seeing this coming for a long time and I would be more surprised if he continued honestly. Sadly, it’s a huge loss for competitive fs, the competitions will definitely be less exciting for me going forward for sure.

Agreed. He has made no secret of the fact that he's been more interested in artistic skating than scores and results. For months! Yet so many fans don't seem to see beyond, 'he's still good, he should keep competing'. It was obvious at Cup of China when he was visibly pleased with his skating and didn't care about the missed jumps. Always a joy to watch him, l will miss his presence at competitions.

Shoma has been hinting at retirement since the beginning of the season, so I can’t say I’m surprised. Halfway through the quad is when skaters usually retire if they don’t plan on doing another Olympics, and I don’t blame Shoma for wanting to move on with his life instead of committing to another two seasons. But I think his absence will be felt-lots of skaters today lack the refinement and musicality that he brought to the sport. It’s sad to see another dominant skater from the 2014-18 quad retire. Hopefully Boyang and Jason will stick around for another Olympics.

I can understand Shoma, maybe it’s a wise and intelligent decision, but what a sad news. I miss him so much! Now only jumps! He was a great athlete but also an artist on the ice.

Shomo appears to be a very intelligent young man. He is also very humble. Like Nathan Chen, I'm sure he might want to pursue his university education. He is smart to go out while he is on top.

I turned green with en^y, after finding out that Hanyu is graduated from Waseda, Top private research university in Japan. Did his major in Information Science & Technology, AI Technology, 3D motion capture system, data analysis, computer programing... and received the ''Highest Honor Award'' for being a ''Role Model'' student, while still competing and winning gold/silver medals, and achieved a career Super Slam, without taking 4 years break from school, to focus only on jumping quads... and continuing making history with unbelievable SOLD-OUT SOLO ice shows, that only he can do because it's a GOAT thing.

In life for most of us, there’s always going be someone with more money, more accolades more whatever. Yuzuru has accomplished very much but you should forge your own path. I thought ONLY my favorite skater is smart and intelligent enough to pursue university education. I was shocked to find out that Hanyu is acknowledged in Masters thesis in multiple international universities... and this time at YALE, for his amazing and inspiring performances. I think I really underestimate the GOAT

Super career, and only Yuzu overshadows him among Japanese men. I hope this year's One Piece on Ice will be made available to watch worldwide. Shoma is great as Luffy.

He was the person that led me to appreciate this sport, and my favorite skater😞...but Shoma once said that he wish fans who only like him can fall in love with this sport, and respect every skater.😞Which I will try.

I think you pretty much answered your own question - it’s better to turn professional without major injury issues and at a time when Uno is still hugely popular 🙂 There’s also limited impact on Team Japan now that Yuma is back, so it’s not like he’s leaving them in the lurch. There have been rumblings about Uno retiring since last summer, I don’t think this was a sudden decision at all. It’s even been timed to coincide with Mao Asada’s new rink opening and his family opening a new café, not to mention his management contract was up and he’s now switched to the same agency as his long-term girlfriend. They’re already booked for a show with Stephane in Switzerland and for another run of One Piece on Ice!

I'm fairly new to figure skating in general so 2023-2024 is my first season as a fan, Shoma being one of the skaters who I was constantly drawn to and enthralled by. So imagine my shock from seeing my little guy retire. I was really hoping that he would stick around and maybe reach Jason Brown levels of longevity, wherein he may not podium but we're glad he's still here, but I will also acknowledge that him retiring in a fairly positive note is a good thing. He'll always have a place in my heart.

this doesn't surprise me. but still, it saddens me very much. Even though he wasn't dominant in the last season as much as in previous ones, he was still great. I used to look forward to his programs. His movements are so graceful and classy, really a delight to the eyes. I am gonna miss him so much. end of an era.

This is why I was so upset when ilia malinin received the award for most valuable skater. Don't get me wrong, this would have been appropriate in the future, but not while an OG like shoma was still skating.

I also felt that purely mathematically, especially since it was 2023 and Shoma won the worlds and the grand prix that year, Shoma should have won. Ilia could have easily won the award the next year!

Ilia having done the first and only landed Quad Axel brought lots of attention back to the sport after the retirement of Yuzuru. We all love Shoma, he’s magnificent, but was outshined by Yuzuru for so long unfortunately for him. He had some difficult periods. The award was for most valuable, as I see it, is about who can bring the crowds in across the ISU reach, with something new, with more expectations to come (like a quint jump). I don’t see the award being about who was the best, that’s what the gold medals are for, and Shoma earned them with greatness. No criticism intended for Shoma here. I will miss him as well. I became disinterested a bit since Yuzuru retired, but then came Ilia and expectations for his artistic improvement and new firsts, and Adam’s unique charisma and athleticism , and Yuma’s return and I’m back to following. Those who advance the sport in significant ways will help bring in an audience. I saw many young hopefuls from 2024 worlds I will be watching in the new season. I wish Shoma much happiness in his retirement.

Bruh. 💀 I was just showing my mom a video of Shoma Uno and telling her how I’m so glad this talented man was still competing after my fav (Yuzuru Hanyu) stepped down. I wanted to see his light shine brighter! Very disheartening to see him retire, just wishing him joy 💔

Fingers crossed that he continues in shows and he can shine even brighter without the restrictions of competition rules. For me, Lambiel was/is THE icon and the men's competitions are not the same for me since 2010. Some of his students bring back his vibes, like Shoma and Deniss. But Stephane was their predecessor with that insane musicality on the ice. While it was really sad that he retired in 2010, he actually created even greater masterpieces for shows afterwards. He does so even now, 14 years after his retirement still skating himself. A true icon. I hope to see Shoma continue creating as well. The ISU rules need a huge comprehensive update to support beautiful skating again.

Shoma is the best ever…his music, his style, his interpretation, this stunning elegance and execution is unique in nowadays figure skating. I think we lost the greatest man on ice for years. He is the most underrated artist ever. Yuzuru was great, but to me shoma has the elegance hanyu never had.

I wanna cry. He's one of my favourite skaters. From my point of view, he acquired interpretation skills when he started being coached by Stephane. Don't know how to explain it but his performances became more beautiful. He also looked happier. I'm so sad but I wish him the best...I genuine think he just wanted a change of environment.

Then clicked this accidentally, and “huh, might as well read the title to see what I even clic- *WHAT THE HECK NOOO* ” 😭 he had one rough free skate recently! And even with that, his short program was flawless!!! He’s still so strong and capable and as a ballet dancer, I feel he represents ballet, true grace, and authentic emotional connection in a way no other male skaters do 😣 just whyyyyy fdtyfiythggbhg urgggggg

He has also gotten so much better with the musical and artistic side, so maybe he wants to focus on ice shows (which make a ton of money) and step back from jumping quads, which always had some technique issues for him.

As much as I wanted to see Shoma on the next Olympics I guess there is one thing that doesn't have to do with competition that makes a lot of skaters retire. Being in shape for such high levels of competition requires so much energy and determination. A lot of skaters are just tired.

Well if you look at it this way Olympics are 2 years away and athletes kinda start prepping way ahead of it. Maybe he wants to go on a high note. Maybe the Japanese fed have some role in it or something idk

Yuma has competitors in Japan his friends kao and shun who are in top 10 at world standings. Japan does have a deep field with sota,kazuki,koshiro too

When I saw the headline my jaw dislocated, I thought he'd at least stay this season and maybe one more

My favorite skaters are all retired by now... We all knew it was coming, but I'm still sad to see Shoma go. I don't know, I'm not that excited about FS as I was before. I'm gonna miss him.

I'm so sad to hear this. I started watching figure skating for the art and stood for Evgenia Medvedeva and him, like you. Always was my fav in the men amont all the compétition and other great skaters. I love his career and agree with you I'm fed up with comparing him with Yuzuru all the time, we knoooow by now. He's first in our heart and it is sad he retires but I hope he will move forward happily and it is all I want for him. Let's remember he won everything (I know, not Olympics)

That's my personal wish but I think Shoma has always been someone who never compromised on both athleticism and artistry, someone who is committed to deliver excellence...so I can't actually see him in a purely artistic program... it's just not Shoma (at least at a professional level!!) he could well be retiring because he wants to simply focus on artistry through ice shows.

Personally watching worlds this year I couldn't help but be suspicious of whether or not Ililia malanin is doping. The sudden gap between skill reminds me a lot of when the Eteri girls first came on the scene. I bet shoma is looking at this and thinking man whats the point

It's honestly so hard to lose him, as legendary as Yuzuru was for his artistry, Shoma standalone was always a force to reckon. His skating style was very captivating because it blended power and grace so seamlessly. Like you mentioned, he is still very much the TOP male skater and having skated alongside other legendary figures for years...I can see how he feels like his own era is closing as all his compatriots have retired. With the actual end of this era, I'm left feeling quite empty as there really isn't anyone else in the current generation of skaters which draws me in. But even Shoma took a while to perfect his craft, so it's only fair to give the upcoming skaters a chance to develop their careers

I just hope he is going to be doing what he wants to do after this. Like if his heart isn't in it, why keep going? We had him for long and am just glad I managed the catch right of those 21 years. Bc seriously, if skating gave out pensions, the man would be fully vested and ready to get his monthly check for life.

I retired at age 26 so I think it's okay but it's hard to explain to people why. It's a great age to retire. YOu still got so many things you can do.

My guess is he's just over it. Based on his interviews, it doesn't sound like his heart is in it anymore. Before he retired he switched management companies from USM to Marin's management. I know she's still young but I wonder if they're gonna get married soon.

I am surprised how ignorant many of these comments are. It is only retirement from COMPETITIVE skating. There comes a time when these skaters should and need to become professional skaters and make money skating like Yuzuru. People will still see him skating but he just won't be competing.

Nah, he was not sure whether to continue further at least for a year already. Japan skating federation made it clear that Kagiyama is kinda considered its priority now (he got higher scores from Japanese judges than Shono for some time already; btw, I'm pretty sure Yuzuru also was scored lower than Uno by Japanese judges by the end of his career). It seems like Japanese federation tends to give hints that it's time to retire, though both were still quite competitive. I believe Shomo said in some interviews he could earn much more for ice shows etc, sport is more about medals and recognition, and like he wants to marry his girlfriend, start a family, so he needs to save up, but competitive sports take too much time, so it's really no surprise he retired

Didn’t surprise me at all. In the interview after worlds, he talked about still considering about the next year’s plan when he already showed signs of retirement.

He said he'll retire after the World's and the time has come. Also I think 26 is not too young, he's had so many injuries and I think he couldn't come back 100% after the last one.

I applaud his wise decision. Respect and congratulations to Shoma Uno. There's more to life than just competing in sport. Have a good rest, Shoma, and best success ahead in his future endeavors.

I think it's the right time and wise decision. TBH, it's like a breaking point. If he continues that means the decision to 2026 podium has been made. But, I personally think he feels too tired and he probably has many new things in life he wanna try. It's right time for him. Good luck Shoma. Thank you and love you.

I agree with you! Shoma is definitely the best performer! He lost the Championship only because he failed at most of his jumps. If one values more the art of the skating than the jumps (like I do), then Shoma is far superior to a Ilia Malinin, who lacks magic on the ice but is good technically at jumps. I am so bored watching Ilia skate, feels emotionless. Shoma is uncomparable on his overall performance, the art and the strong emotion and majestic he brings into his skating.

26 is not young for a male figure skin to retire come on let’s look back at who retired at what age you know most of them just go to one Olympic cycle. It’s a lot on your body, being a figure skater has got to be the most wear, and tear on your body of any sport

4:48 Imo, Shoma always had issues with his jump technique. I have never seen him jumping a 4F clean. Lots of over- and under-rotations throughout his whole career and not even the sign of trying to fix them. Not even with Lambiel. They have always been counting on that Shoma is "supported" in his scores and he won't get called. Now, after the "scandal", they obviously realized that he cannot compete with Adam and Ilia and he just decided to give up and quit.

I think you are definitely too hard on him😡🤬😤. if Shoma has decided that retirement is the best for his future, so be it, but you can't deny he was a joy to watch, quad or not quad! I was always waiting for his new programs, watching his old ones won't be the same, unfortunately.

As an obsessive Shoma fan, I think the situation is more complex. Jumps have never been Shoma’s strong point. It took him 4 years of constant jumping and falling to get his triple axel. Everyone who has been in skating for a long time knows that Shoma’s jumps were problematic, and Lambiel brought Ghislain Briand to Champery to help Shoma work on them. That had good results not only for Shoma, but also Dennis and Koshiro: Dennis won bronze at Europeans, Koshiro silver at Japanese Nationals, and Shoma had his “golden season” in 2022-2023. Shoma’s jumping did improve with Ghislain’s support in 2022 and 2023, you can see improvement with the naked eye. At Worlds 2023, however, Shoma seriously injured his foot during practice, changing the actual position of his bone. After Worlds 2023, Shoma said that he wanted to skate with expression, emphasizing that part of skating that he loves most, not the jumping valued most highly by ISU. The injury meant that Shoma didn’t have time to break in new skates, so most of last season he was competing on broken boots, one of them held together with tape. If you know Shoma, determination is his middle name, so he struggled through as usual. At NHK, several jumps were under-rotated and the errors were properly called. What is interesting is how Shoma and his team reacted to this: Stephane seemed pretty upset, calling the competition a “clown show” and telling Shoma he could skip the next competition. Shoma, however, expressed concern that he had skated the best he could at NHK and that he perhaps could not improve his jumps for the next competition, even with trying. He also firmly stated that rules were there for reason and must be followed by all skaters, and that he would try his best to improve his under-rotations. (I wondered how his broken boots might affect this plan, although of course Shoma never mentioned them. Shoma would never use that as an excuse).I felt again how unfortunate that judges had given him overly positive scores throughout his career, thus preventing him from any chance of improving his problematic tech. Although once muscle memory is formed, it is almost impossible to change it. Mao worked for many years unsuccessfully to improve her Lutz edge. It’s unfortunate that the lack of proper judging calls throughout his career has meant that people can easily pull up the old bromide that Shoma “cheats” his jumps, although it’s obvious that Shoma was shocked and surprised when they were called at NHK. Shoma’s humility, lack of ego, and known love of high pressure skating practices - he’s not known by Japanese skaters as a practice demon for nothing - cement the fact that this man works himself like a maniac, and always tries to do his best, within the realm of possibility. But you are right that this probably was one factor, among many, that compelled Shoma to retire now. He worked more strongly on his jumps than any other part of his skating in 2022 and 2023. It’s the part of skating that he enjoys the least, although he has been unstinting in his praise of Yuma and Ilia’s jumps; he probably feels that 21 years of jumping is enough and it’s his right to focus now on the expressive, musical, emotive parts of skating that enthrall him.

The very first competition where Stephane accompanied Shoma (to Rostelecom), in the Kiss and Cry he is talking to him about how he opens his shoulder on his jump landings. This was a problem and they immediately began working on it. His jumps absolutely improved under Stephane. And of course Ghislain is an amazing jump guru.

I think while Shoma's skating is beautiful, he just couldn't keep up technically. He tends to have some pretty interesting jump techniques to say the least, and he just can't do everything that Ilia, Adam, and Yuma can. I see the lack of motivation and him knowing he can't do all they can making him no longer want to compete.

You guys get upset when pedo crime happen against white girls (like morgan cipre situation), but when the victim or assalter is Japanese, it's okay? His "girlfriend" retired at 21. What's surpirsing about a guy retiring at 26？(He's almost 27) The double standard is crazy.

Paola Shoma is mentally defeated. All because of one stupid jump called the 4A. Illia has perfected that jump. I hope Illia will succeed in his attempts for a 5 rotatiin jump. Illia in my opinion will succeed with that as well. He has the length, energy, talent, speed and youth for it. However, I wish that ALL male skaters out there will realize figure skating has MANY OTHER elements wherein they can beat Illia. I love Ilia. I am a huge fan of Illia, but he does not have the entertainment package like for example Jason Brown. Even Dennis Vasieljevs ( pardon wrong spelling) is better than Ilia in that regard. Ilia has the flexibility of a knitting needle PS..I am waiting for the arrows shooting at me😆

ISU need to change the judge system, I feel that, more and more, the sport is becoming in "Jumping Skating"

The problem is the judging is SO heavily weighted on jumps, even forgetting the artistic and just looking at the technical elements the jumps have a huge advantage over spins and skating skills. (Deniss Vasiljevs also gets lower PCS than Ilia also, somehow, even though he is considered a more artistic skater).
