Adam Rippon: Valieva competing at Winter Olympics is 'slap in the face'

Спорт

Adam Rippon, the former Olympic bronze medallist and skating coach, has launched a scathing attack on the decision to allow 15-year-old Kamila Valieva to compete at the Beijing Winter Games after she tested positive for a banned substance.
Subscribe to Guardian Sport ► bit.ly/GDNSport
'It's a complete slap in the face to every single athlete who comes here to compete clean,' Rippon said, before expressing sympathy with Valieva and anger towards the Russian Olympic Committee. 'The people around her completely failed her,' added Rippon, who is coaching US skater Mariah Bell at the 2022 Games.
Rippon's comments came after news emerged that Valieva listed two legal substances - L-carnitine and Hypoxen, both used to improve heart function - on an anti-doping control form she filled out before her doping case came to light. The Russian skater tested positive for a banned substance, trimetazidine, in December. Valieva has not spoken publicly about the controversy but her coach, Eteri Tutberidze, has denied the doping allegations. 'I want to say that I am absolutely sure that Kamila is innocent and clean,' Tutberiz

It makes me sick to think of the abuse these child athletes have to endure behind the scenes - especially the ones who have made it to the Olympic level. What is also terrible, is if she was 16 there would not be this middle grey area, she’s be out no questions asked and I believe she is just a few months away. She’s still be a child even at 16 and I’d believe that it was still the responsibility of the adults around her to create the situation. The only way to remedy this is to change the rule to increase the age or update the note about protected person. She should be protected, like by not rewarding the coaches and countries that do this to children to continue doing it.

I agree completely. However the hypocrisy with what he said here and how he acted at the obvious breakdown that Alexander Trusova had after winning silver is really telling. “Her attitude was as bad as her skating” okay but her attitude was a trauma response from abuse that you clearly stated here is happening in that training camp. The lack of empathy for Alexandra was insane compared to Kamila. They both deserve the same treatment and kindness.

All they're waiting for is for the trial, which will find her guilty, because a positive drug test is like a video of you murdering someone one. It's irrefutable evidence. The only question left if how long she will be suspended and how many medals she'll lose. Will it be the Russian nationals, the European Championships, the team competition and ladies singles?

It‘s quite interesting how everyone is having an opinion about this before there was even a sentence made. If they decide that Kamila should not have been allowed to compete, it’s just fair that she won’t win a medal of course! But the damage would be increasingly higher if they didn’t let her compete now and if it then turned out that everything was fine! They took the right decision in letting her into the competition with reservation. I think everyone agrees that Kamila is the victim in this whole affair. And let’s be honest guys, you can’t perform such an astonishing wonderful programme just because of doping. Her art on the ice goes beyond everything what could be supported by drugs. Let’s not judge a child without knowing anything about the circumstances. Im Zweifel für den Angeklagten. In dubio pro reo!
