Thank you! OGL and D&D Update (Jan 28th 2023). RPG Creator/Designer Thoughts!

As I said in the video, I really just want to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for the support, kindness and understanding shown in my last video. And another HUGER thank you for everyone who gave feedback to Wizards, filled in the survey, shared info and generally, helped make the very positive result yesterday happen!
Big love to you all!

Little Addendum RE the OGL 1.0a and SRD Creative Commons! Please Read! (PINNED COMMENT) A few folks have pointed out to me that whilst the SRD 5.1 being under Creative Commons means we can make 5th Edition D&D Content freely now, there is still a chance that Wizards will amend or try to revoke the 1.0a OGL (they have said they won't but we shouldn't take anything like this at face value) and that WILL affect content made for older editions of D&D and possibly games built on/around it (citation needed on that second bit). This is a great point, one I overlooked because I don't make published content for those editions but a lot of folks do! Sorry about that! I'd love to see those editions Basic Rules/SRDs added to Creative Commons as well (I played a ton of 3rd/3.5 and 4th and liked parts from all of them), OR the 1.0a OGL modified to be 100% irrevocable and perpetual without question.

to play a little bit devil's advocate here (dw, i'm not advocating anything remotely close to their previous attempts): i never want a legal document to be unchangeabe, or at least not unammendable let me explain something written with even the best foresight in the world can't always account for the future, even if it seems completely benign and fair a law written in the 1800s for example could hardly account for let's say the internet, and might suddenly screw over the very thing it was trying to protect new loopholes, exploits and other unintended abuses, even if only through ambiguity (language changes over time, and it's easy to loose meaning), can easily come up basically i'm all for keeping the ogl 1.0a and protecting it, just maybe we should be careful with our wording as well when we try to do so hope this can add to the discussion in a constructive manner

    1. they cant actually revoke this whole thing. if it goes to court they will fail. 2. i would be rather careful. they can pretty much empty the SRD 5.1 from content and on top dont CC the next version (6 or whatever it is) and fuck everryone from behind.

I think with the 5e being put in CC removes any reason for WotC to deauthorize the 1.0a OGL since 5e is the edition they care about. Moving forward they will probably not add to the SRD so 6e/One D&D will not likely be put under an open license, but i think past editions should be safe.

What great summary of the experience and situation. Thank you. A silver lining for me in all this has been finding and subscribing to your channel. I love your kind, generous, yet grounded perspective. It is good to have videos like this to signpost the history of what happened here. I have seen this cycle before in the decades playing the game and the role of the watchful participants is key. Like you, I had thought this would play out over months or longer. I would not have been surprised if courts got involved. I thought that WotC had more bark than bite legally, but was afraid they’d force it to the test. I’m glad they didn’t, hope that it’s at least in part because of those on the inside who saw the risks of legal failure, and hope they will put internal learning in place to help them break the cycle of corporate forgetfulness of where the value lies. Only time will tell. Tonight, we celebrate.

For me this feels like a Pyrrhic victory, we as a community won in keeping the OGL 1.0a. There was a major cost, in our trust of WOTC, and damage done to the community and by the community. Even with my own group, some just didn't care others were strongly of the opinion that WOTC had the right to change the OGL how ever they wanted, going so far as to blame the layoffs on the OGL drama.

I'm glad you're feeling better Mark! I was a little late catching your first video, and hope you saw the message there, but either way, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and maintain such an even-handed approach. There is a little that I'm sad about with this, because while 1.2 had a lot of problems - a lot of loopholes that needed to be fixed - 1.0a itself is still not a strong legal document and it IS direly in need of an update... so I would rather they'd have fixed 1.2 to the point of it being acceptable, than just giving up and going back to 1.0a. In particular, the 1.2 draft had a provision that any parts of any *future* SRDs that were not released to CC4 were covered by the license, which is something 1.0a doesn't do... and I'd really liked to have kept that provision. Either way, though, releasing the full srd5 to CC4 is a big move, and while that doesn't mean I'll trust them, It is enough for me to show my appreciation of the action, and continue to support the people whose fault this wasn't - the designers and other team members who had nothing to do with making the mess. I'm moving forward with more caution, and less trust, but still with a desire to support. I'd like to see their fancy new VTT, and I think it'd be cool if it truly is an excellent tool, robust enough and free-and-flexible enough to win merit on its own without having to try to stifle competition... it's never going to 'be' the game, though; it can never be more than an optional tool, but I hope they can still make an excellent tool of it while understanding that. Anyway, thanks for the status update, I'm glad to hear you're doing better, at the end of this rough couple of weeks! -Erica

I am so happy that this part has been won. It isn't a complete win, but that just means staying vigilant. Mark, I am glad to hear that you were able to get some sleep. I did see your previous video and I appreciated the honesty and vulnerability that you shared. My heart goes out to all within this community. I don't pkay regularly. I have only had a couple of opportunities. I do watch a fair bit of content and my kids are involved in regular campaigns so I am aware of what was happening. I was livid for all of you. I hope that the powers that be have finally pulled their heads out of dark places and see where their bread is really buttered. Anyway, thank you for you insight and honesty.

Well said yet again! The groups I play in were already experimenting with other systems (Gary Gygax's Lejendary Adventure & a purely homebrewed Old West themed game based on the Desperados CRPG), but we were planning on moving back to D&D 5e for our next campaign. We decided that in spite of the stunning reversal yesterday that we are still not willing to reward their bad behavior, and for now we're going to give PF2 or Cypher System a shot next. Our campaigns typically last for 1.5-2 years, so we'll have plenty of time to evaluate where WotC goes from here.

Thank you for being a voice of reason in the Chaos. Thanks to you and Ginny I feel able to make an informed choice that is right for myself and the group of Critters I have the honour to DM for. We are for now staying with 5e but, as you said, Wizards will have to convince us to move to One D&D when it is published.

Very well said. It is a good sign that Wizards backed off from their initial plans, but as you pointed out, the leadership that thinks that D&D is undermonetized and has it's future in more digital assets and video game-like resources are still there. Seeing how they handle the next edition will be quite telling I think, as well as what they do with D&D Beyond. As always, take care. :)

You are in good company, sitting in uncertainty as to how to proceed-- and in your position as someone who is planning on creating their own TTRPG to better suit your paradigm for fantasy roleplaying design and gameplay, as well. I, personally, am not quite going so far as creating an entirely new game, but I'm well into creating a hack for (or a massive revision of) 5e D&D which will revamp the majority of the player and DM-side systems, as well as add on additional systems and subsystems on top of it for the sake of creating a more rich and diverse gameplay experience. As someone who similarly comes from a background of homebrewing 5e and expanding what the basic game's system puts in the DM's hands, I very much look forward to seeing what you'll come up with, and what sort of new RPG world we and similarly minded people can bring forth in this new era of freedom and openness that has come with WotC's capitulation.

I hope to see a lot more of your wisdom advice and personality on KZread Mark. This has left me very wary of platforms Wizards control. I won't be buying digital content on d&d beyond for example but if they make a good book then I might buy it but it will have to be really good the bar is high Kobold Press, ghostfire and others make really good product and there are other games I want to try. So wizards need to invest a lot of effort and make really great stuff. And if 6th edition isn't open I think I'll skip it. Thanks again Mark, see you soon.

A great, thoughtful video! One of the best things to come out of WOTC/Hasbro's attempt to decommission OGL 1.0a is people looking at other games to see what other experiences are out there. Another one is a lot of 3rd party creators & content creators looking to develop their own systems. Diversity is a strength when we look at communities. Different people come with their own experiences and perspectives. By welcoming them into our communities and bnuilding our communities to support them, we grow and become better versions of ourselves. A lot of indie creators have different backgrounds, often marginalised in different ways. Their experiences and perspectives influence their game design which make for more empathetic play experiences. There is a probability that many people who railed against the Ampersand Corporation's attempted changes will be mollified by their capitulation and go back to playing D&D. But I'm hopeful that some folks will branch out, and find a new game that teaches them something about themselves and others. I hope that creators' content exploring non-D&D & indie games gets as much presence on platforms as D&Drama did. I know I will be hunting for it from creators with renewed vigor.

So glad you’re doing well! And that you’ll continue to develop your own system - I’m sure that will be an amazing experience and look forward to seeing it. Diversification is a smart move IMO - the executives who tried this are still at Hasbro, and ‘irrevocable’ hasn’t been added to the OGL, so there’s no guarantee they won’t try to sneak things past us in the future.

It's amazing that they actually listened to people and changed so many things positively. At the same time, it is worrying that they tried to do all this stuff in the first place, and they could try something again in the future. The community definitely has to stay vigilant.

I've watched up to Aerois #55 so far & gotta say that in this, & tbh even how open you are in the first OGL video; you seem happier, more self assured, really in touch with yourself if that makes sense, compared to the version of you I'm watching from 3 years ago. Dunno if that's accurate but I really hope it is, you've given a lot to a lot of people & it'd be great if you're doing as well as you seem to be :)

Oh, in your upcoming game, can you include a trigger spell? I used to love "Quest for Glory" computer games as a younger man and one of the things they had that no has replicated is a trigger spell. It triggers magical effects, sets off magical traps, etc. Look it up. It was very enjoyable.
