i don’t understand why people are against having a harness just for safety. if it works our and you don’t need it- great. it’s still an amazing feat of climbing. if it doesn’t work out… you’re still alive. so many talented free climbers have died.

Lol, this ledge is near the end of a harder pitch so standing is far less demanding and can give you a much needed rest. Chance of a fall there is extremely slim.

@@VitalyMack Also isn’t half dome pretty much entirely granite which is very smooth and void of many holds bigger than a thumb? I’m very inexperienced, so correct me as you see fit. This is more question that statement

@kevinthielmann9408 granite can be very smooth, but can also be very coarse. As far as handholds, yeah they can be sparce, so a lot of the routs are following crack systems.

Anyone can do this man, you just need to slowly expose yourself to heights and train your body for climbing. I started climbing 4 months ago and I've already done my first lead climb outdoors. In a decade I will climb half dome, just to sit on this ledge and admire the view. Btw, 4 months ago I could barely climb a ladder without being afraid, now I trust my safety to bolts that were placed in the rock by strangers many years ago!

@@adamlee2550 I have been wanting to for a long time. I already work in a job where I have to install pipes 100 feet up in the air guided in by a crane once in awhile for a pipe fitter. Carrying my impact, wrenches, bolts and nuts all on my person. The whip would be easily 20 feet in some places if I ever fall. I can also die if the crane swings a pipe into my noggn. Idk where the hell I would start with this stuff though. Took getting used to pretty quick I can say that much. I didn't have a choice, one day I was on the ground, the next day boss told me to get up there or I was fired because somebody was sick. I can proudly say I never shat myself.

Fun fact: Every year it rains and water will ingress into every nook and cranny you can imagine. During the winter it'll freeze. Little by little that flat slab of granite will separate from the wall. Gravity will certainly bring it down to the forest floor below where it will shatter onto thousands of pieces. Knowing this, you're playing Darwin's lottery wheel of death. Yes, probability, I know, but it'll certainly happen.

Annnnd, there goes my dry palms.

I got the heebie-jeebies while leading about 7 pitches up the RNW route, was plugging like a zipper on 5.8. Usually lead 5.11 no sweat. Rapped back down through a bunch of pissed off foreigners. Never saw TGLedge.

We ran out of water and the third main sleeping ledge was full of Gatorade bottles…full of piss! No water for us. Never understood why people piss in a bottle and leave it.

People talk so much about how this gives them anxiety, but as someone with very high anxiety, climbing has like significantly helped believe it or not, I have like an awful fear of heights, but being about to conquer that fear makes me feel like I’m on top of the world!

Is Alex Honnold the only climber you can name? DONT CHEAT! FYI, Alex didnt allow anyone this close to him during his climb & he didnt wear a head-cam.... they were drones, drop cams, hanging cameramen etc..... so, to me, Alex didnt have a picture, Chen did..... This is far more awesome to see, imo. And FYI, this is Half Dome..... Alex did free solo it but the major film "Free Solo" was about his ascent of "The Nose"......

I remember the image of Alex Honnold stood on that ledge in free solo 😂

I have fond memories of this ledge, age 18, after teaming up for the climb with two Welshmen I met in the campground. The ledge accommodations at the halfway point on the wall are fortunately wider than this traverse. After fixing the first two pitches and sleeping at the base of the wall, the route took us around 36 hours (as a three person team). El Capitan’s Nose route felt like 1.75 Half Domes, technically more sustained in difficulty and variation..but with an easier approach!

I’m thinking it’d be an ‘ah , shitter’ if you got up to a pretty dicey part of the climb and realized that the two didn’t actually know what they were doing . ​@@lisacolbert5987 seen this happen in Yosemite twice. We were pitches up on difficult section and saw a team who could beraly speak each other's language. This chick was leading and ran-out, started to get pumped and yelled to the French guy to watch her because she was sketched out. And the French guy just yells "huh, off belay!" The lead chick started screaming in this blood curling scream, but couldn't be heard over the wind. Luckily we happen to be there and stared screaming to the French guy to not pull his belay. Was crazy! Those two could definitely climb, but clearly didn't know what the fuck they were doing on a big wall. And should have never teamed up.

I guess it doesn’t really matter, whether 100’ up or here … I don’t climb , I sail , and wouldn’t think of going to sea with people I’d just met in a parking lot or wherever. I’m not a Karen , I just know that people bite off more than they can chew all the time. And to be up there before realizing my new climbing partners shouldn’t be there ..? Scary. Thanks !m

My palms weren't sweating enough so I decided to watch this....

All that with a pack on and full harness of dangling bits, that's why I wanna get better at leading so I don't have to carry lol

You do have to carry everything on lead....your second cleans then you either lead the next pitch or swap leads. Either way the both of us carry the same amount of stuff all day. 👊

Sometimes I lay in bed and think about Honold standing on this ledge with no ropes attached.....insanity. Just bump your upper body a bit, loose balance...see ya!

Alex Honnold is obviously a special human, however the mind and body operate on a different level when you know certain death is the consequence. Most free solo climbers die on easier climbs cause they lose that sense of fear and get comfortable, so they're too relaxed. Fear drives adrenaline. Adrenaline makes the body respond appropriately.

When you've been climbing for so long this is honestly a very safe and chill spot to be. He's on rope. Even if the ledge broke off (which would be completely insane, that type of stuff happens every couple hundred years) he would be caught by the rope
