Climbing Half Dome The Extended Version.

On May the 17th of 2024, my friends and I head out to climb Half Dome in the off season with the cables down and no permits necessary. This is the extended version of that trip. If this video is a little too long for you, be sure to check out my other video that's only 7 minutes.
This hike was no joke, setting off at 7:00 AM, not to return until midnight. We hiked somewhere between 21.5 to 23 miles. (My Apple Watch died on me at mile 18.) and the elevation gain and loss is over 5,000 feet.
This is one of the hardest hikes I've done, but it is so worth it! Yosemite National Park is one of the most epic places on Earth. With this being my first time here, I cannot wait to go back! Dude! That is insane! Your camera angles really helped show how steep it is - and I have zero doubt it's more terrifying in person! I can't wait to get out there! LOL I just found your channel - Great job with the editing! National Park Service announced there was horrible accident there today (7/25/24).

My body stiffens up within a 90 minute ride home, and it looks like you guys were well on your way to that same wonderful state of being!

Thank you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed. It was an awesome experience! Yes, the accident was horrible. I would advise anyone to use a harness all the time, even with the cables up.

We could barely get out of the truck, much less walk when we got to Doug’s.

Way back in 1987 my girlfriend and I did this hike. Halfway up the cables, she chickened out. I was the only person up there the entire time. Didn't see another soul until I got back down the cables. Most of the boards were missing. Every time after that visit it was more crowded until my last time in 91 it was a solid train of people up and down the cables. I went down the southwest side quite a bit down towards the falls. Steep but the rock face is very grippy. No permits were needed back then. The 87 hike was followed by the Upper Yosemite Falls hike then Glacier Point. 3 consecutive days of brutal hikes. It seems most places require permits these days due to the crowds.

Yes, mass crowds definitely bring regulation which is why we went when the cables were down. Less crowds, there was no more than a couple dozen people at the base of the cables and only a few people at the top. Thank you for watching!

I was there 3 weeks ago. Did Vernal Falls/Nevada Falls but didn’t have permit for Half Dome. Disappointed but will conquer Half Doom soon enough. Love your video ❤

Thank you so much for watching! Since I went, I’ve heard several stories of people who wait at the base of sub dome, asking other hikers if they have extra permits and each time they’ve gone, they were able to pick one up off other hikers.

I liked the video, but wonder why so many feel the need to add annoying music to the background.

Thank you for watching. You’re the second person to mention the music and now that you have mentioned it, other channels that I watch, don’t have that much, if any, music. I can tell you this, I have a solo trip coming up that I will exclude music from the edit. Thank you for the feedback. I really appreciate it!

Where all the Europeans with their funky shoes 😂. Last time I noticed the lady in front of me wearing ducks. Such an odd choice of footwear for this event I thought to myself. Seconds later, she was sliding off the face of the rock away from me. She got lucky and the guy behind me had really long arms. Where the hell is everyone? We usually walk on the outside of the rails because they’re too many people holding us up. Still looks beautiful.🎉

Definitely would not recommend ducks lol. We went before the rails were up. There were a few dozen people but way less crowded when the cables are down in the off season. Thankful for your friend with the long arms! Thanks for watching!

How does the harness work in case of a slip when there are no rails to stop? Like wouldnt the harness and you slide down without a stop?

So we used a climbers not called a prusik loop. In the event you slipped, the knot would stop you from falling when tension is applied.

How Funny, do many people tie themselves to the cables? I did it in April with much more snow and didn't see anyone tying to the cables. I have also climbed it in the summer - it is much easier with the cables down.

Some people will go up with no harness, others only clip in with carabiners. I chose a prusik loop for security in case a slipped. To each their own. Thanks for watching!

I have never been with the cables up, so I can’t say. Judging by the videos I’ve seen of the cables up, I would think it is better with the cables down. Thanks for watching!
