Thales SeaFire Radar for French Navy Future FDI Frigates

The French Minister of Armed Forces, Florence Parly, was visiting the Thales site of Limours this week, which specializes in military radars. The first SeaFire radar array for the future FDI frigates of the French Navy (Marine Nationale) was presented to her.
Thales is delivering this first antenna on budget and ahead of schedule. It will be tested at the Shore Integration Facility in Southern France, where it will be thoroughly tested for about four year.
Rémi Mongabure, Surface Radars Bid Director at Thales, gives us the schedule and the qualities of the SeaFire next generation radar.

Can't have very good range as mounted so low down.

500km range is pretty damn good, more than type 45 by 25% maybe next time actually listen to what is said in video before making comment

@@lordtemplar9274 Range is determinted by curvature of the earth. You cannot see a sea skimming missile that far away if the panels are mounted low down. Type 45 radar is mounted 45 meters high so will obviously see farther.

@@sensibledriver933 by your expert calculations what range difference does a few meters do when you are talking vast distances? Please enlighten me. To effectively overcome the curvature of the earth you need to be a lot higher with a plane like an AWACS. Furthermore the FDI radar has 4 fixed panels giving total coverage of 360° azimuth and 90° elevation, so no blind spots. The type 45 uses only 2 panels rotating 30x per min, giving you about 0.5 sec blind spot

@@lordtemplar9274 Simple explanation. If you look over a 5 ft fence you will only see what is visible from the distance you are. Two ways you can see more is walk closer or stand higher. It isn't rocket science. When trying to track sea skimming missiles, that extra 5 or so miles at sea level is of more benefit than a radar that has continuous coverage over one that can only see every 0.5 seconds, unless the missile can cover 5 miles in 0.5 seconds. Don't forget that type 45 also has that huge black panel that can be pointed in the threat directon which has continupus coverage but only in the direction it is pointed. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radar_horizon

@@sensibledriver933 if you bother to look at the maths you will see that a few meters of mast height only makes a small difference when we are talking detection distances in km. Based on incomplete info, we are hypothetically talking approx. a 13 miles vs 14 miles horizon detection range for sea skimming missile. That is a difference of just over 1 mile, and certainly not 5 miles as you completely made up. It's not like horizon detection doubles if your mast is twice as high. Do you even know the height of FDI? As i said earlier, the only practical way to overcome OTH in the open sea is with AWACS type planes, like a E2D Hawkeye on a carrier (or a crows nest on a heli). Of course there are OTH radars on land but these are massive installations and would not fit on a ship. None of this changes that you claimed it "can't have good radar range" when in fact FDI has +25% radar range than Type 45 widely regarded as having excellent detection capabilities (500km vs 400km). FDI is a multipurpose midsize frigate and costs a lot less than Type 45 whose main purpose is aerial defence. (FYI French Navy uses Horizon class for anti air carrier escort.) In addition to aerial defence, FDI runs low noise and has in-hull sonar array + towed sonar for ASW. It's a lot of bang for buck in a state of the art package. So your criticsm is completely unwarranted. I bet Royal Navy would be happy to have Thales Sea Fire 500 on its Type 31, we will see what radar they choose to equip in the not too distant future. 😉
