Thai-style Green Apple Salad
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This Thai-style salad is a lot like som tam, but uses green apples instead of green papaya. Since green papaya can be hard to find, the green apple provides a nice tart flavour and crisp texture that's incredible in this type of salad. I hope you love it!

This is from 9 years ago, yet I still think about it regularly and I've made it a few times and often recommend it to people around me. So good!

I just discovered your chanel and i love your videos! I like how short they are!
This looks amazing Jay. Another amazing recipe! And being that Granny apples are my fave fruit, it's perfect!
Looks so fresh and delicious! :)
i'm watering~~looks yummy
great recipe! i love that salad but like you said, its hard to get a hold of green papayas so i will def. try this one! thanks.
I made a soup for lunch with onion, parsnip, turnip. green apple, chicken broth and a little cream. Very good as the onion, parsnip and turnip are a little sweet themselves, with a nutty undertone.
Can't wait to try your salad, it looks delicious. I don't know if this is an answer to your question of the day or not but frequently I serve fried apples along side pork dishes. They are particularly good with smoked pork chops.
Looks delicious 😋

All the rabbits wanted that
The first few times I made som tam, I used green mangoes. It tastes so good. I came up with this recipe when I was looking for a local ingredient with a similar flavour profile. Thanks for watching!

Funnily enough we're surrounded by papaya trees but someone gave us some apples yesterday! How weird is that?
Yes, use a little bit at the end to preserve texture and looks.
Glad you like. You won't be disappointed. It's delicious. This makes a great topping for grilled halibut or tofu/tempeh. Btw, I love your show. Say Hi to Chris!
this looks delicious though...never tried apples...yum
Such a beautiful salad! I'm going to give it a try substituting a little Bragg's Aminos for the fish sauce to keep it veg :)
Thank you for your video. It is very good idea to replace green apple instead of papaya ka.I am Thai but currently living oversea it is very hard to find papaya and too expensive.
What is the brand of the fish sauce you use?
Is tomatoes fruits or vegetable.. I use them as vegetables.
There is vegetarian fish sauce. A lot of Asian grocery stores have it right next to the regular fish sauce.
Do you think i could substitute the fish sauce for sesame oil? I know fish sauce gives it distinct flavor but i am a vegetarian. Thanks!
we also use rice vermicelli noodles, cucumbers, and carrots if we cant find papaya
I love this recipe .i use it when I cant get green papyas
For some reason I want to try this on a smoked pulled pork sandwich. I have a question though. It seems you added the shallots twice. Was that half the shallots mashed and half added at the end?
whaaaat? Googling it now! Mahalo :)
The vermicelli sounds good! I've done it with cucumber before and its nice too.
tomatoes are the last thing i used in a meal. it's a mighty convenient and tasty fruit that goes great with many things. :)
long beans are good as well...we even use pineapple and watermelon sometime...leaving out the garlic though.
Isn't fish sause's smell strong?
I just had apple in a salad for the first time not too long ago. But, it was a jicama salad. - The Sweetest Vegan
Thank you for watching!
Doesn’t the Apple go brown?
smart ..green apples!
Use a grater for the apples make shoestring apples or shreds. Needed more chilies

The traditional way of making this requires pounding everything in the mortar and pestle. I imagine that pounding the beans is a way of getting the flavours into them. As a result, everything is saturated with that taste of the dressing.
no, you are ;)
We have zucchini often and only ever really use it as a vegetable.
That looks just like real som tum.
Which part of the country are you from?? I think u can find green papaya pretty easy in most place

I loathe fish sauce. Perhaps you could suggest a soy sauce substitute.
Tomato in my taco salad. Rhubarb pie.
Yes, but not when you use it as part of something. There are funkier things than fish sauce like belacan. The key is balance.
When was the last time you use fruit as a vegetable? Tomato! Everybody thinks that tomato is vegetable but it's actually a fruit LOL!
There’s no shallots in original Thai styel We only use garlic
Proportions not given
It's green pineapple not papaya..
asian cooking have it going on. i use pineapple on baked ham, not very interesting. and pineapple on pizza once again with ham. you ask really thought provoking questions. i guess i must expand my horizon.
