For this recipe I invited my friend Sarah to show you how to make delicious and authentic Khao Mok Gai or Thai Chicken Biryani. Sarah is from Southern Thailand where there is alot of Muslim thai food dishes. The yellow rice and fried chicken are very flavorful due to the spice mix and fried shallots. My Magic Mint Sauce recipe adds a refreshing taste to each bit of this dish.
This seems like a complex dish to make but it is really pretty easy and worth the effort in prepping. I think you won't be disappointed.
Thai Biryani Chicken Ingredients:
Marinade Ingredients
1.5 lbs chicken thigh (4-5 pcs)
1 tbsp curry powder
1 tbsp cumin
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp white pepper
1 tsp coriander
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp green cardamom
1/2 tsp cloves
1/4 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup plain milk
2 tbsp plain butter
Magic Mint Sauce
1 cup mint
1 cup cilantro
1-2 sliced jalapeño
1 tbsp sliced garlic
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
Yellow Rice Ingredients
2 cup jasmine rice
1/3 cup cooking oil
1 cup fine sliced shallots
2-3 bay leaves
1 pinch saffron
2.5 cup water

Hi Valerie - thank you so much for taking the time to send me your feedback. this is one of my favorite recipes because it’s also hard to find a good place that can make it in the restaurant. Maybe a Thai fried chicken video would be a good one in the future!!

I made it and it was really good. Simple and very flavorful. I used method one with the rice cooker. The chicken was very tender and the mint sauce on the side was a great compliment. My daughter said she wanted to make it next time. My only comment is I used a little less oil for cooking the chicken. Otherwise great dish.

J Chau Appreciate your commitment. Yes, if you feel like too much oil, please take some out before adding rice. Frying chicken can add more oil.

Question: When I was in Thailand I used to eat Thai Chicken Biryani. It was delicious. However, I never liked the mint sauce. So, the street vendor offered me a delicious sauce instead of the mint sauce and that goes with Thai Chicken Biryani very well . The question is what is that sauce ? ... It was a clear liquid in color ( may be chicken broth) with some pieces of green leaf (may be green onions). Was very light in flavor. Do you know what it is and how to make it.???
