@@twistedyogert It is not known quite how he deals with it, but to begin with he is a transformer so there is a limit to comparative assumptions we can make with humans. There was a single instance in which we saw things through his perspective and it may be that he simply lacks depth perception. The other possibility is that his eye works in a different manner to human eyes and as such is not hindered by the lack of a secondary optic.

Shockwave in most continuities is the deepest character in transformers. Unfortunately, he’s rarely ever explored on screen. Mostly it shows up in comics and such.

When Shockwave interacted with Ratchet "nicely", I always thought it was because it was logical. If you don't treat your partner with kindness and respect, how are you supposed to get work done? You don't, there'll be tension and conflict, so gotta play nice xD But I like that view that he was almost like an excited child wanting to try their new thing, it makes the whole Ratchet and Shockwave moment seem sweet.

You forgot one facet of his personality, his vengefulness. A good example of this would be when Predaking was lured and trapped through a space bridge. Shockwave witnessed, with his own optic, all his hard work, months maybe even years of dedicated research, care and effort, seemingly go down to the drain. When Starscream made those snide comments to him afterwards, he doesn't ignore it, he doesn't even seem to acknowledge them, he just walks off. What Starscream would assume as him going to sulk, he actually goes to join the battle in the defense of Dark Mount, and if you remember he put in a lot more energy than any emotionless robot would ever have to. His leaps and bounds forces the very earth beneath him to shudder, he drives foward, firing aggressively. And when he finally gets over to the, at that moment, defeated Wheeljack and Bulkhead, you can hear the edge in his voice as he informs them of their illogical decision to even come there. An emotionless being, especially a sentient robot, wouldn't have even moved from that spot as he watched on the warship. He would have just stared blankly, not even showing a physical reaction, but guess who didn't do that. Shockwave.

Don’t forget when the decepticons were trying to destroy the predacons, Starscream failed to inform Shockwave that the autobots arrived and was hoping he would die in the lab. Shockwave survived the attempt and Megatron, Shockwave and Starscream were investigating the aftermath. During which Starscream made a snide remark towards Wave and he grabbed him and was ready to drive a cyber matter spike through his head

Agreed. Shockwave, doesn't really show his feelings with emotions. He shows them through his actions. He was incredibly pissed at what the Autobots did to Pedaking, and his violent movements and actions toward them showed how truly pissed he was. It's even shown again when he assaulted Starscream. After Starscream's snide remark. He didn't say anything at first. Just grabbed him and tried to stab his eye out. He had had enough of Starscream's attempts on his life, and not intending to kill Scream, intended to punish his harshly for it.

Agreed, and had Megatron not possessed superior resources lab space and experiments, Shockwave would have continued to resign to his own devices. The ONLY reason he even considered rejoining Decepticon ranks was because it was logical to pursue and use Megatron's resources.

Honestly, I didn't think about him like this. I just saw him as "ooo sinister scientist that says 'logical' every other sentence"

Shockwave has a LOT of character in Covenant of Primus. He's fond of his creations and views himself as their father, and felt lonely and betrayed when the Dinobots rebelled against him. He likes Megatron's attention, and rewards his loyal followers with accommodations. He gets very excited about dinosaurs and his experiments, and seems to genuinely believe that what he does isn't cruelty, but kindness. He's squeamish at being insulted, and shuts off his auditory centers so he can ignore it and concentrate. He even mumbles to himself happily while he is working. It's hard to believe that it's the same continuity as TFP. Though Shockwave himself might say otherwise, he is far from emotionless, he just lacks empathy and the SELF PERCEPTION of his own emotions. Another thing to note is in TFP, Shockwave makes a lot less sound when hurt compared to other characters. I have a headcanon that he has an extremely high pain tolerance, and therefore does not understand other bots' pain, thinking they're just being dramatic.

I like that headcanon. Arcee's shot to the eye must've REALLY hurt, then--that's the only time I can remember him groaning in pain (for a counterexample, Bumblebee put the Star Saber through his eye and he didn't make a sound).

Although Shockwave in this series seems to be very much cruel and your typical bad guy.

If you want to see the most emotional and outrageus version of this character you can ever get, may i recomend @EmGo 316 Christmas of 2020 in that channel: Shockwave: (attempts to make sentient snowmen) Also Shockwave: The snowmen aren't sentient, but they somehow learned how to pee! Optimus and megatron: (slowly turn their view towards the entrance)

I actually like the emotionless, logical scientist that IDW made him. Since shockwave is regularly portrayed as a villain, and there aren't many characters like him, I thought it worked pretty well.

I think Shockwave was always interested in the concept and theory of life in general. Because in the past, he was the scientist/surgeon that created the combiners (of a based form of it) in the gladitor aerna, "created" the dinobots and then the predacons. Hell, even Megatron laughed and said "you messing with life again eh Shockwave (or something along those lines when Shockwave introduced the predacon/Predaking to Megatron) which means that this was his MO with the decepticons and Megatron is ok/used to this manner from Shockwave. Shockwave has always "cares" for cybertron because he deciper of the Quintessons language and share this information with cybertronians than make a deal with the Quintessons for them to give Shockwave test subjects/riches/whatever. As for not caring for failed creations because to him, they are failures and have no values because to him, he failed in creating something useful/great. If the subjects can't provide anything of use to him, whatever it is information/usefulness of the subjects surviving/adapting will be destroyed/discarded. This is why Shockwave is proud of the predacons, they can and will survive even on a recently revived cybertron. As Shockwave being more "warm" to Starscream, Shockwave has been alone on a dead cybertron for who knows how long with NO ONE else around. This can affect even the strongest amd emotionless people mentally when they realize they can be truly be alone. Shockwave wants to be alone but even he knows that complete isolation from everyone on a dead cybertron is affecting him in some ways or other. One more note then I will disappear, in one of the last episodes of Season 3, Shockwave ask Megatron of why was Megatron choose to cyberform Earth instead of Cybertron. Shockwave demeanor is very odd and out of character for him in scene since he refer to Megatron as "Master" instead of My liege/My Lord. Showing that Shockwave wanted an answer but did not want a possible backlash from Megatron. I remember this from a tumblr post years ago about this and it stuck with me about this scene. Shockwave wanted to revive Cybertron because he cares for cybertron because it is their home and was somewhat sad at Megatron's choice. *swan-dive into the dumpster*

Really glad for this analysis, it points out how a couple of emotions are actually not considered emotions by a good chunk of viewers (ex: fear, anger), and it shows the depth his character, after all prioritizing logic doesn't make you emotionless, it just means you're more prone to set emotions aside when you see it fit.

Now I think about it, I can see why they work as a team. Shockwave doesn't want to be alone, he wants a partner all be it maybe not one as mouthy as Starscream but since he needs Shockwave, it's a guarantee. Meanwhile all Starscream ever wants is to be made to feel good about himself. If Shockwave treats Starscream respectfully, then Starscream will be happy to form a long term partnership.

For me I always thought that shockwave had emotions he just didn’t always let them get the better of him say someone like Megatron Whos anger has been his downfall un many different continuities I always felt like shockwave had emotions but just wouldn’t let the basic ones always get in the way anger happiness love joy and all that but lets the lesser emotions show more like annoyance or being ambitious maybe because he finds it logical who knows 🤷🏾‍♂️ and I also feel like shockwave is a nice bot Who just does bad things

Yes yes Shockwave seems very mannered and he's sensible. If not for Transformers mostly being about Autobots good and Decepticons bad, and there had been a much more realistic plot on the post apocalyptic world Cybertronians are suffering in, I feel he would be much different from how he is in TFP and would more likely be a neutral than a Decepticon for the cause

We must not forget that he mobilized the 3 predacons against Unicron, when he said 'when it won't be much logical to employ your might elsewhere this time.'

In the IDW continuity Shockwave was lobotomized and had his face removed making him the unfeeling drone that he is. If something similar happened to him he could be recovering and getting his feelings back. It also might explain his drive for experimentation so that he could get back what he lost.

The reason many cold and "emotionless" characters still display anger and fear is because these are the two most primal and vital emotions of every organism, as they both compell one to survive; self preservation and defending themselves and/or other members of their kind. It makes sense Shockwave would leave them intact in order to function purely logically, within reason.

I've always had the headcanon that, after the war, Shockwave was allowed to live in whatever society The Predacons made, being protected by Predaking in return for cloning more of his people. I'd like to think that there is a place on Cybertron where they're allowed to live uninterrupted by the rest of the planet, like an unsteady peace treaty. But I agree that there definitely seems to have been a change in Shockwave.

Shockwave is the most gangsta of all Transformers. He's just so methodical and built different.

Shockwave seems like Mewtwo in the Pokémon universe. Rarely showing compassion but still willing to kill.

Shockwave is just a very pleasing character. Cool voice, BADASS design, scientist, and also, “L O G I C”

When Shockwave first arrives through the space bridge in season 3, I felt that when he asked why he was left, he sounded sad from abandonment, even his body language had shown that.

In other continuities, Starscream and Soundwave are my favorite cons, but Aligned Shockwave beats them out in the Prime series, he has quite a lot of character development

David Sobolov did such an amazing job voicing Shockwave

I like the fact that Shockwave is so controversially depicted in the animated series. He said that being alone on Cybertron allowed him to focus on creating new inventions, but at the same time we understand that he definitely lacked someone nearby who could appreciate his creations. I really think he likes that someone appreciates his inventions well. We have been shown too little of it

Can't wait for an Optimus video. Especially after having a deep analysis on him and how he is so similar to me for the most part

Shockwave easily became my favorite Decepticon when he was introduced in TFP. His ability to only think using logic, but also have character growth made him an interesting character. Usually, when you just have a character that only thinks using logic, it becomes predictable and stale, but throw some illogical emotion into the mix and it makes the character much more interesting

From the original G1 Comics from the 80's Shockwave is as powerful as Megatron, he's beaten Megatron several times and has taken his role as the Decepticon leader multiple times. That version of Shockwave was even able to take down every single Autobot and I'm pretty sure some Decepticons too single handedly and hung their bodies upside down in their own base. That version of Shockwave is scary, I don't think we'll ever get to see that power from a modern day Shockwave ever, but the Prime Shockwave was just as scary, may not be as powerful, but the voice, the body language and reactions, it's creepy enough to be the Perfect Shockwave. Besides G1 of course.

I think a great opportunity to show Shockwave,s emotional range would have been for him to speak out against Megatrons decision to destroy the predacons. He could have been firm and said something along the lines of " lord Megatron, I spent centuries developing the predacon clones. If you destroy them, you lose the greatest threat to the autobots. As long as we do not give the predacons a reason to betray us, they will not. " Its a line that Shockwave can afford to cross because of two reasons. 1. Shockwave is a top notch scientist in his field, so Megatron would most likely spare him and consider his input and 2. If he had spoken up like that, he would have had a point. It would also show that Shockwave isn't just a mindless drone that agrees with whatever Megatron says and that he has his own opinions. its not exactly standing up to him but it's not exactly letting him tell him what to do with his project either. I'm sure starscream and knockout would have a massive amount of respect for Shockwave for telling off Megatron and getting away with it unharmed. Shockwave has shown that he is capable of thinking for himself. For example, when starscream tried to have him killed, he immediately attacked him and threatened him. he didn't ask for Megatrons permission, he wasn't ordered to do it, he just acted on what HE wanted to do. I have a feeling that even if Megatron ordered him to spare him, Shockwave would have ignored him until he was done with the interrogation. little moments like that would have given Shockwave more character development to not seem like a mindless follower.

I can’t put TF retribution down. The parts about Shockwave are so intriguing but went things start to fall apart he comes unglued. Shockwave would be a horrible leader if Megatron were no more. In the book Soundwave is the con that saves the day. I did enjoy Shockwave in Cyberverse. He opened up a little about Megs not understanding him and had to deal with some bullying from Soundwave but he was pretty similar to his Prime counterpart.

Oooh this is good! I'd never really given Shockwaves emotions much thought cause of the whole logic thing, but this makes complete sense! As for Optimus, he has - for example - gotten absolutely pissed off a couple times ("Megatron must be destroyed.." then just kills anyone in his way on the ship - though he did give the option to stand down first) so I think he just hides his emotions, or maybe suppresses them to keep to the Autobot code (like when he had a go at Ratchet when he tortured that 'con miner while on unstable SynthEn)? Whatever it is, I just think he maintains great control over his emotions, instead of pushing them to one side as Shockwave did.

While I'll always prefer his G1 voice, TFP's Shockwave had some great depth to him. Thanks for the video.

IDW Shockwave completely changed my view of the character, and I appreciate how Prime kinda explored his character.

Every Shockwave (Shockblast obviously notwithstanding) might seem to be emotionless at some points but they usually have a low tolerance for BS (and in Animated he sometimes fights with Lugnut over who is most loyal to Megatron). Agitation is an emotion. They're just introverts when it comes right down to it. They're not like Animated Perceptor who straight up _deleted his emotions._ Which given the logic-driven nature of Shockwaves, you'd think one of them would have done at some point.

If robots in disguise actually continued properly from the aligned continuity then we could have possibly seen shockwaves character devolp into a neutural or dare i say autobot

What i want to know is how he reacted to Starscream killing three Predacons

i like to think at the end shockwave decided to abandon the deception cause, became less cruel and focused on helping to repair and advance cybertron. focusing on science but also allowing to limit himself a little bit as to not replicate the destruction of Cybertron

I imagine he didn't like Cybertronians at first then when he got left all by himself he began to miss others and with him being by himself he did a lot of introspection

One thing that I noticed in this show, is that Shockwave cannot fight. He was mostly a scientist, not a fighter, so almost every fight he's in, he loses and retreats.

What are you talking about literally the only fight he really lost was with ultra Magnus he decimated bee and smokescreen and easily held off wheel jack and bulkhead note wheel jack was able to go toe to toe with soundwave and even still the fight with ultra Magnus could’ve ended in a stalemate shockwave wasn’t down and managed to land a few blows on him

@@shockie3963 let’s not forget, he lost a fight with Arcee and Cliffjumper, the fight with Bee and Smokescreen was merely successful because he needed the bone (which he failed at, Soundwave did it for him), the time on the Nemesis where the Autobots take over in the final episode, being overrun by predacon/terrorcons, the time the Autobots escaped him when they destroyed Darkmount, the assault on the predacon lab, etc. point is, he’s a scientist, not a fighter.

I don't know if it's fair to say that he "Can't fight" but he probably isn't a very good fighter (In hand to hand at least)

Yesss thank you so much Emperor, I’ve been hoping for a Shockwave analysis so much :)

I read his interactions with Ratchet as a sort of "Finally, somebody with the intellectual adroitness and academic background understand my work" mostly because as an introvert with a big personality I was the same way when I was a young electrician in the Navy. I also feel like it is similar to, in the broad strokes at least, in how Ratchet being a genius doctor who understands cordiality and teamwork was able to get through to Knock Out.

Can't wait for the Optimus discussion. Hope that you're healing well Emperor Kumquat.

shockwave and soundwave. the perfect duo

I feel like I can relate to shockwave, he ignores emotions when they have no means or progression and thinks purely logically, but that's about it, he cannot accept that seemingly impossible things are often not as they seem

I know shockwave isn't the best person but that bit in the beginning where he said, along the lines, that he doesn't understand people because he isolated himself really hit with me because I understand that in a way I couldn't really make friends when I was younger and my parents chose to "isolate" us in a way by not visiting family, letting family visit us or really encouraging us to make friends and bring them over and vice versa. Because I was "isolated" my while life, it is difficult for me to connect with others as I don't understand people the way others do

Shockwave and soundwave were most badass characters

I can't help but think on Shockwave's IDW1 counterpart: Shockwave was subjected to empurata, giving him his famous cycloptic visage, and attempts were made to suppress his intellect by lobotomizing him. The experience left him unable to consider the moral concerns he once had, and he gained an absolute, sociopathic devotion to perpetuating the longevity of Cybertron at the cost of the entire surrounding universe. It is effectively a more extreme version of Shockwave's social isolation in the Aligned continuity, reinforced by the misguided use of brain-washing neurosurgery.

I noticed that Shockwave genuinely cared about the predictors, and led them. He never seemed emotionless, it just wasn't necessary, tfp Shockwave is kind of a Vulcan

No one can change this for me. When Shockwave and Soundwave are together they are like "Fuck you guys, We are Decepticons A team"

Shockwave was isolated for who knows how many years, even when Cybertron still had life he wasn't open to a lot of communication. He didn't care. When forced to interact with others after so many years, he learns gradually to change his tone because the Vehicons don't know how to respond to him, everyone but Megatron and Soundwave (and Starscream who just outright hates him) are weary of him so he knows his approach is stressing out many of his peers among an already stressful situation of them being the last few of their remaining faction. Now calling him nicer is a far stretch, he technically isn't but he does learn how to communicate with others which comes off as a nicer approach than previously. He basically re-evaluated how he approaches his insults and demeanor rather than changing it outright. That's the key difference.

I really love TFP Shockwave, he is one of my most favourite characters in the show. Calm, almost emotionless scientist who would do anything in the name of Science. I really like such concept of a character. And now we know that he actually does have emotions.

HUGE RESPECT FOR SHOCKWAVE.I thought why he didnt flee like starscream its bcoz it shows how much of a warrior he is despite knowing his master is controlled,his predacons were down,his partner starscream flew away and no autobots and espite knowing he was the only one standing he fought those predacons and ddnt surrender and despite getting severly injured he wanted to aid the autobotsto defeat Unicorn ,he put his differences from them aside and sent him to fight Unicron which shows he really has changed.He certainly didnt become an Autobot but he did change from A Decepticon.As like Optimus said evey sentinet being posses the capacity fro chnge ,not only Megatron but Shockwave,Knockout,The Three Predacons all did and huge respect to them,especially Shockwave.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Something I find interesting about Shockwave in this continuity is how physically powerful he is. Under Functionism, he'd definitely have been made a slave, but being born before that, he was able to become one of Cybertron's greatest scientists. His mere existence goes against the old system, and proves a bot can be anything.

You can't stay on the same ship with Starscream and remain emotionless

@@alexandrasilvermoon179 Ikr, it's weird how much you can love an annoying and crazy creature and not being able to bring yourself to give them the boot. A good example of this is Sheldon Cooper in "The Big Bang Theory". Everyone thinks he's super annoying and more often than not he gets someone mad at him, but they still stay with him and remain friends with him, comfort him when he's sad, miss him when he's gone, and being proud of him when he accomplishes something great. I think Sheldon Cooper and Starscream are pretty relatable to each other.

This reminds me of a comic called Regeneration One where Shockwave gains more emotion and in an act of selflessness saves Starscream's life

Ratchet is one of the few characters in the show who can even come close to matching wits with Shockwave, and that probably is refreshing for him. He doesn't need to worry about dumbing down his speech when talking to Ratchet as opposed to most other bots. Not to mention, Rachet is pretty humbled and doesn't boast about his superiority like certain other bots. He is just a passionate scientist who can more or less keep up.

This is a very deep video, but that thumbnail has me cracking up because all I hear in my brain is "menacing"

He is not nicer, Starscream literally "dodged" his death by shockwave 2 times by sentencing something logical. And this shockwave is the incarnation of logic, so if something is logical he respect it, even if it means not having revenge.

For future content, I hope you'll chance doing some what if's for this series. Some that I think would go a long ways to being fun: What if Megatron allowed Dreadwing to kill Starscream? Instead of stepping in. What if Dreadwing actually joined the Autobots when he gave then the Forge, if only so he could kill Starscream? OR, What if Dreadwing simply didn't return to the Decepticon ship? And decided to consider his options more after learning that Starscream desecrated his brother? What if Arcee held herself back, and didn't fight Starscream when he accidently admitted to killing Cliffjumper? What if Miko didn't fire the missile that saved Wheeljack? What if Breakdown refused to attack Bulkhead after he was saved? Some of these would be cool I think, and you likely have some cool ideas yourself.

Shockwaves the 2nd coolest transformer just dwarfed by Megatron but he definetly has the coolest transformation i love that he turns into a tank

You have to remember the decepticons never truly wanted to destroy their planet they just wanted to see under a new rule, and Shockwave respected other scientist or medics, and he cared about his experiments and other life forms we see in tf g1, fall of cybertron, dark spark,etc

I imagine getting eviserated by Grimlock changed his outlook on life.
