    Have 2 of both and I find myself preferring the medium light. Cast a country mile, more fun to fight medium size drum. Lighter in the hand with less fatigue. They’re pretty comparable honestly. Just my 2 cents.

    6'6" Medium power fast action is the best all round freshwater rod IMO. I have one medium light and i always struggled to get good hooksets with it. I was told to use it for crankbaits because the treble hooks dont require that power.

    Good video, I think it’s more the “action” of the rod versus the power of the rod with hook sets. I agree the ML is a great treble bait rod

    It’s definitely both. It’s always a combination of factors. A mod-action, extra heavy will set a hook way better than and ultra-light extra fast rod. Those are extremes, but it illustrates that it’s a spectrum with many variables. A rods action only performs as advertised when it’s weighted properly. You can weight a rod with different size lures, fighting different sized fish, or setting a hook harder or softer. A medium-light “extra-fast” will quickly become a slow action rod (or brake) if you’re throwing a 2oz lure.

    can medium be considered as a great “all-around” choice for fresh and salt? And also smaller fish to slot-sized reds? Due to my current budget, I am “dreaming” of a rod-reel set up that I can reasonably expect to catch crappie and blue gills on, but also catch keeper sized trouts, reds, and flounders on. I emphasize “dream” but I hope it exists!

  • @Comey757

    @Comey757

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yeah man. A 7’ medium, fast action rod can handle all of those easily. Might not cast small crappie and blue gill jigs as far but it will work. That’s all I used for years and had success.

  • @coreytowner9726

    What pound braid and leader are you using on your medium? I have a Daiwa BG 2500 reel and want to pair it with a 15-pound braid and either 20 - or 30-pound leader. Would the medium fast TFO rod handle this?

  • @Saltstrong

    @Saltstrong

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes it could handle that with no problem, but i would say that you could possibly get away with 10# braid and 20#leader as we have pulled in some monster fish with that setup. That will allow you to have further casting distance with the lighter line. 💪

    I purchased the TFO Medium Professional Spinning Rod based on an earlier Salt Strong review and have been very pleased with the performance. After watching this video I’d recommend that you offer a correction in the comments. All of the rods in this series are listed by TFO as ‘Moderate-Fast’, not ‘Fast’ as it was repeatedly referred to in this video. My own experience with the rod I own confirmed the Moderate-Fast action listing is accurate. The reviewer actually tied the power and action together for the Medium rod; as ‘Medium Fast’. While the rod’s power is ‘Medium’ (1/4 - 3/4 oz. which compares more evenly with some manufacturers Medium-Heavy) the action is ‘Moderate-Fast’ and the bend is slightly more parabolic than a true ‘Fast’ action rod. Maybe I’m focusing on semantics but if someone is looking for a true ‘Fast’ action spinning rod this may not be the best choice for them. I really appreciate all the content from Salt Strong and hope you read this as ‘feedback for improvement’ rather than a harsh criticism.

    Bob, Medium for saltwater generally is to 3/4 oz where my medium heavy saltwater rods are 1oz or even 1.25oz. However fresh water and bass series do have a medium heavy as 3/4oz a lot of times.

  • @bobgibbs4105

    @bobgibbs4105

    @@zackmorehouse Thanks for the clarification. The ONE manufacturer I had in mind when I made the comment regarding the MH comparison was 13 Fishing. Their Fate Green Inshore rod in MH is only rated for a max of 3/4 oz. I have several of their freshwater rods and have had a good experience with them so I was considering their inshore rod as an option when I purchased the TFO Professional.

    Is medium fast sloppy like an ugly stick ultra light

  • @bobgibbs4105

    @bobgibbs4105

    Жыл бұрын

    @@waylonlegend4603 The TFO Professional series Medium Power / Moderate-Fast Action rod is anything but sloppy. It's not exactly what I would describe as 'crisp' but it never feels out of control. The Moderate-Fast Action allows the top +/-30% of the rod to bend but it takes a fair amount of force or weight for the rod to bend due to the Medium Power rating (1/4-3/4 oz. lure weight / 6-12 lb. line weight). I have no personal experience with Ugly Stick UL rods but I'd imagine that the Action would be Moderate, where the rod bends down to +/-50%, and that the lure/line ratings would be in the 1/32-3/16 oz. & 2-6 lb. range. I've had plenty of UL spinning rods by other manufacturer's and would agree that the combination of UL Power and Moderate Action will make the rod have a very parabolic bend when reeling anything larger than a small panfish and some even feel 'sloppy' when casting light lures. A more direct comparison to the Ugly Stick UL would probably be the TFO Trout-Panfish series, I have the 6'-6" UL. It is labeled as a UL Power / Fast Action and it fishes that way... it has a 'crisp' casting action and makes catching a Bull Bluegill as much fun as catching a Bull Redfish (on appropriately sized tackle). Probably more info than you wanted but that's how I roll. 😁Tight Lines!
