Hi guys, for the past two days the item servers were down and we were essentially reverted to a vanilla 2007 TF2 experience. While Valve managed to fix it, I recorded some gameplay and reactions, take a look at what it was like!

I still remember when they added all the achievement weapons for the Medic, and so everyone just played Medic. Combat medics, everywhere. But being able to experience the Orange Box experience again? Bliss. EDIT: I still have it on my shelf.

Primeval Warrior here and I disagree. The first iteration or 2 were fine but the slow degradation of quality in cosmetics, followed by obnoxious paints and unusuals marked the game going downhill for me (generally), though the gameplay is still fine. I feel 2009-2012 were peak- there were more maps than launch, exciting updates with new weapons, new game modes were being unveiled, very populated and healthy selection of quality community servers (my own included which I miss dearly). People still had an interest in modding and custom content, and not everyone was an eyesore with gaudy neon radiation emanating from their loadouts. F2P was both a blessing and a curse. You also might be forgetting that before hats we had way less than half of the weapons we have now. The state of the game now is still fun but saddens me deeply, as it feels like it has no soul anymore. Valve does not care about the game other than milking it for the Mann Co. Store and it shows.

I honestly wished Valve would do such an event where the loadout is disabled on casual servers (not community servers) but it should only be once a year on a specific date, to remind us how tf2 was back then.

This just shows you still can have fun in TF2 without your items.

The 2008 update, to be honest, was one of the most impressive updates I've witnessed for TF2.

I'm pretty sure the last update wasn't a mistake, Valve just doesn't want people to know that they just miss the good ol' days of 2007. I too miss when TF2 wasn't all about hats and unusuals, just everyone grinding and having fun

I've only ever played the console version of TF2, which is still stuck in 2007. But I still have a blast playing it. Is the PC version so far removed from what is used to be? I'm getting a Steam Deck soon and it would be nice to finally play the game with all the new maps and weapons.

I have always wanted a vanilla mode like this. Had I know the servers were gonna be messed up for so long, I would have jumped at it to play.

I think one of the reasons why I fell out of tf2 is how every server is filled with sweaty tryhards with loadouts that make me want to uninstall. Wish I was around when this happened, nobody told me until afterwards

The one reason why I fell out of tf2 is because my pc broke since TF2 was unplayable due to lag

It's nice not having Kunai + Deadringer Spy mains, lime-green Scouts, and crit stickybomb Demos.

Yesterday on a casual server, we all agreed on playing Class Wars. With set loadouts even. SMG sniper, bat scout, fist heavy, it was awesome lmao

actually had fun playing Free-to-play Fortress. A limited-time stock-only playlist seems like it could actually be a nice addition to the game.

Spys favorite update... Also didnt realize how unsatisfying killing spies actually was until they removed the deadringer

This time, we’re doing it old school.

Now I wonder if having official valve 2007 servers so to speak would be a good idea, as in you can use your cosmetics and stock weapon skins, but no weapon unlocks.

I think even hats and miscs should be disabled in such mode

it actually felt rly nostalgic like took me back when i was still newbie mannnn

Tf2 community and valve should work togheter to ensure that our game is saved We must unite and togheter we must save our game We must destroy the bots and fix the game and bring it to glory Now with SaveTF2 coming back, at least we must give it a bigger goal than just a bot problem

Honestly that was the most fun I've had in recent memory when playing Tf2.

Honestly if they could make a que for stock tf2 playlist I would bite now and again. Just pure skill.

The fact that the item server is still a separate entity and that the game functions without it is still very impressive. Other games would just boot you out of the game without a connection.

For me it was an ok experience, the only thing I hated was that I couldn’t use my taunts

*Dudunsparce (Three-Segment Form)* _(And Maushold - Family of Three cause I forgot)_ Knowing that Valve is acting differently since DMCAing a Source 2 TF2 mod, it kinda makes me worried for the future of TF2 especially since the bot problem is still ongoing and is getting worse with it almost being two years since the original protest and even though the item servers are up and running, its unacceptable that it was down for 2 whole days without any response! #SaveTF2

Dangit I missed it this time. Not even kidding, I like getting TF2 gameplay with this much team clarity.

The crazy thing about those two days were there was a drastic decrease of bots. However if you got in a server with your items, there were a lot of bots.

What they honestly could do, is just add a "classic mode" where you play with all stock. Have it be like a lil check mark on the casual/comp area.

Good thing about item servers being down, Spies are dead, no kritkrieg at the start of the match and no wrangler

i somehow thought it was my internets problem but now i see that the item servers are down, besides i never get to experience the 2007 version tf2 man but atleast I get to experience it now, great content there 🎉

You know. After seeing this, I wouldn't mind in a future update (Whenever the hell that happens) they would make official servers dedicated to Stock Mode. -Stock Weapons -Original and New Maps

I'd love this to be a permanent game mode, and maybe an event once or twice a year. The game was designed with stock in mind.

3 days later, it's actually insane to me to see that a lot of people's reaction to this rather terrible situation was to meet it with joy, while a lot of people were pissed, mad and complaining (rightfully because not being able to use items you paid for is bad), many others were happy with the experience of everyone using stock items. It really makes me think a lot about humanity in a way.

The game really feels more fun, better, and even true to itself, since Team Fortress 2 never had any backpack items to begin with upon its release.

Brings me joy to see the newer players see and feel how fun it was back in 2007/2008, been in TF2 since late '07 :)

not having to deal with deadringer spies must've felt so good.

Best part was all the spy "mains" that relied on the dead ringer and kunai getting the stuffing beat out of them because they had no idea what to do with stock knife and invis watch.

It was fun playing stock. But I missed my detonator, and my bazare bargain. But I did like that the dead ringer wasn't a thing. I tried playing spy and I realized how much I rely on the cloak and dagger.

I think they should do this on purpose every year on tf2's birthday. Turn back the clock to 2007. The only hats you allowed to equip are the party hat or gibus. The only weapons you can equip are stock unless you get a random drop. If you got a random drop you would be automatically forced to equip and use the new weapon:)

Got OrangeBox for Half Life 2, started playing tf2 around when the Flare Gun came out

damn, if i knew they were down for those two days i would've played. 2007-2010 ish era TF2 was the period i loved the game the most, especially early 2008 when there was either still no new weapons or only the medic had new toys and the Ubersaw was basically an unsuaul tier item for a period due to you needing to 100% all medic achievements to earn the damn thing, until they lowered it later on.

I could see this becoming a community game mode. :P

Felt like game repeatin itself since, to those who new or even been after MYM to Jungle Inferno then hackbots overtaken many pubs, it happened once during Tough Break update

Item servers seem to be back but honestly that was pretty fun, though it was hard to distinguish between the players with crazy amounts of hours and players with not so many.

Yeah, I was on pl_pier and it was kinda lit playing this game with no unlocks. At first, I was bummed out and decided to wait until it came back after several minutes, but it never came. Though after I played for a while with everyone in the same boat, damn, I feel like it should be a separate game-mode, it was quite the experience! Try it out, Valve.

I decided to get back into TF2 after 3 and half years and the biggest item server crash happens. TBH it was kind of fun playing vanilla tf2.

pyro still has airblast and a few class has other sides but beside that feel like the orange box
