Texas Persimmon

Hello, my youtube viewers! Take a look at my TEXAS PERSIMMON tree. I was able to harvest some of the berries. Pretty sweet and interesting fruit. It's been here for years and I never knew that much about it until now. Let's go!

I don't know about deer, but these fruit are crack to my goats. Found these in the back pasture (I'm up in the San Antonio area) so I've been trying to research them. Found 4 seeds in one berry so I am hoping I can easily grow more trees. Thanks for the video! I didn't know about the male/female trees. I'll have to take a look tomorrow when I let the goats back out.

Hey! Do these seem to ripen with any particular season, as in wet or dry weather? I'm doing a bit of research on fruit in general and it would be nice to know if these ripen during the wet or dry season

Well, we’ve had a dry season and they are ripe right now. The deer seem to like them a lot.

Those look gorgeous. I’d love to hear what you think of the taste and how you eat it. Fresh or just jam?

They are very sweet. Mostly big seed, but easy to just pop the whole thing in your mouth.

If deer don’t eat it I would be concerned about eating it because the deer ate everything. We have persimmons that grow wild on the East Coast it’s a tree can’t eat them until the first frost they are so bitter your lips will pucker after the frost they are sweet

putting slightly unripe persimmons in the freezer will neutralize the astringency

Sometimes your tree can overproduce. When that happens, they will take a year off. To avoid that, you can thin some of the fruit early on, so the ones that are left will develop more fully and put less stress on the tree.

Are you supposed to wait until they drop off the tree? American persimmons aren't ripe enough until they fall off

imagine cross pollinating a black persimmon, wild American persimmon, and other Japanese persimmon. then you plant a bunch of seed to see what kind of cross breed you can get
