Im 5'10 and 185, just got my first traditional bow and really had to rope in my ego and not get a 50# bow to start, very happy I went a lil lighter at 45#.

Well said, personally not interested in bows that are ridiculously heavy because 50 pounds is more than enough to kill any animal in his country.

Hey Tex, Howard Hill bows. Not too much more money than a Bear Kodiac,, will build you a laminated american flat bow anywhere up to 120 lbs. Good shooters with the right arrows.

I just made my first laminated recurve very reminiscent if a bear grizzly and it turned out 74# at 28". I can draw it ok but I'm not going to be holding it back like it's a compound. I've always been impressed with your form on that 100# martin recurve tho!

Actually, I would prefer to buy fast speed recurve crossbows at lower prices.... Does it really cost double or triple the price to make an Excalibur Matrix bulldog 400 fps compared to an Excalibur GRZ2 305 fps bow... ???

My first bow was 35# and I was in the seventh grade. It was a recurve and I learned to shoot it well before moving up to a 50# bow a year later. Years later I bought my first compound bow in 1990. I lost intrest in archery at that point and put it down for 3 years. It was not a challenge anymore and lost its appeal to me. After those three years I found an old recurve that was 43lbs and took my first deer with it. I eventualy moved up to a 55lb recurve then three years later bought a Mongolian style horse bow. It is 65lbs and short from tip to tip. I spot and stalk most of the time and this bow is ideal for this type of hunting. The very next year I made my first pyrimid style bow from a hickory stave. It is backed with jute twine and draws 70lbs at 29". I have been shooting TRAD archery for over 35 yrs now . I love making my own bows, arrows, quivers, strings and any other archery tackle. I always encourage people to start at low lb weight and work your way up slowley. Acuracy and tuning you tackle is more important than the draw weight. The exception to that rule is much larger animals then I prefer to use my heavier lb bows. Like I said earlier I took my first deer with a 43lb bow. My arrow found its mark and the deer never even ran. It dropped were I shot it. It was over in less and 10 seconds.
