    Hey Apollo! You were right about the right Teutonic army. I played it and I hoped to beat that Lithuanian army but I saw only the half of it and I had to fall back and engage again. It didnt worked sadly. But that was a great battle! (Sadly you did miss the early cavalry engagement on our side but thats fine!)

    @Ben I've been watching Apollo's channel for quite a few years and at this point it seems he been pulling Quality battles and as a viewer I ranked this one as one of the greats. I thought you did the right move on pressing out but I didn't know what you were engaging with your army comp. It was very difficult decisions

    @Alex the Order still exists , it just doesn’t have a military might anymore much like all other Catholic orders (most chose to not be militarized as they saw no need, they can still but only if the Holy See requires it) that still exist from medieval times such as Knights Hospitaller and Order of Santiago (need to double check on them) and Knights of the Holy sepulchre.

    Hey guys just wanted to know how does chain mail stop swords and such things from cutting and damaging. If they did save then how were soldiers killled to death provided slicing was not really beneficial and stabbing would be one the few ways of killing. May be I am not able to present my question but please guys do tell me if yu understand my question.

  • @PixelatedApollo1

    Stabbing would cut trough Chain mail. Also chain mail would not protect you from blunt damage.

  • @Arcaryon

    @Arcaryon

    2 жыл бұрын

    Thing is, stabbing was one of the most popular methods of combat before firearms took over everything for a reason. A spear is one of the truly universal weapons that saw great popularity everywhere, from a mere sharpened stick to extraordinary displays of craftsmanship. The chain mail mainly served the purpose of working together with leather and eventually even plate armor. On its own, it was already somewhat effective but a fully armored combatant wearing cloth, leather and chainmail had a significant edge as he was certainly protected from many arrows, could take blunt trauma head on while taking less damage and of course had the added confident boost which can not be underestimated in large battles or even smaller engagements. The chainmail works less like a plate armor that was supposed to completely tank a blow, it’s individual pieces mean that slicing of course has a far lesser effect and penetrating blows require significantly more force to destroy the armor than mere hardened leather would. Leather is made from large pieces. As you can imagine, hitting a big mass means that the point of contact transmits far more force. Chain on the other hand has more resistance due to the many individual rings, layered together their resistance is greater and while of course far from impenetrable, it offered a protection that was, especially in combination, very significant as even relatively minor wounds could impact the ability of a soldier.

  • @Arcaryon

    @Arcaryon

    2 жыл бұрын

    Furthermore, the chainmail was easier to fit around the whole body than plate while also offering greater movement than many earlier armor types so arms and the upper legs were completely protected while you remained very mobile. Writers on Quora offer a great amount of details to the question as well: "When it comes to mail, that’s slightly less invulnerable. The mail itself is still basically invulnerable to cuts (though it makes you less invulnerable to cuts). It can be penetrated by stabs, though it’s important to note that stabbing through mail is not like stabbing through tulle. When stabbing through textiles, the point will tend to force its way between threads and then, because threads are flexible by nature, force them aside to make way for the rest of the blade. If they’re forced too far, and/or the point is supported by sharp edges, the threads will tear. Mail doesn’t do those things. Yes, you can get a point between rings. But the rings have very considerable resistance to being forced aside or broken. It can be done, of course, but you’re right that it takes a very powerful stab. This is actually one of the features of mail armor: against all but the most powerful stabs, it tends to limit the depth of any penetration that does occur, because the blade can only go in so far before getting stuck. Also, it’s worth noting that getting a point between rings is not necessarily easy. People wore mail as surreptitious body armor even against rapiers. When you look at mail that’s actually on the body, you can see that the gaps are pretty narrow even if the mail hasn’t been specifically designed to be extra-thick. The actual surface presented is pretty smooth, and of course the rings are shifting around as the wearer moves as well. Assuming your point is narrow enough, stabbing at mail is still a perfectly sensible thing to do. But stabbing at mail, even with a narrow and pointy blade, doesn’t mean that your opponent might as well be naked. The armor still works. It just doesn’t work as well as it does against cuts."

    Summed up; stabbing is harder and doesn’t penetrate as deeply as it would against leather or cloth, slicing is nearly impossible because steel is hard to break and especially if you basically distribute your force across a very wide area and only ever hit individual parts, one remains very agile and therefore, if you could afford it, you wanted chainmail.

    Chainmail was very effective and was one of the few armour types that was used Centuries after Centuries
