    Wow, I've been making this so much harder for myself all these years, using a combo of Canon Utilities, DPP, and LR on commercial shoots, in good part because live view was a nonnegotiable requirement (I don't particularly enjoy working with Capture One) but also admittedly I just didn't know better. Did not know I can do it all in just LR...this will simplify my life so much...THANK YOU!!

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Ernesto. Thanks for your comment I've only seen that happen once and it was due to the camera software installed. I don't shoot Nikon but it may be the same thing. When you buy a camera there is some software that is shipped with it from the manufacturer. If you have any of the Nikon software installed, try removing it and rebooting everything, and trying again. With my canon, this used to happen and it went away once I removed the Canon software that came with the camera. It seemed to conflict with Lightroom and the result was that the button became unresponsive but I was still able to shoot from the computer. If that doesn't work I would try to use a different USB cable. Give those things a go and let me know how you go. Dan

    You make an excellent point. I’ve run into the same problem with some cameras. The way I’ve gotten around this is to have the camera set to shoot raw to the first card and jpg to the second card. It seems that light room will only take the image from one of the cards. If it doesn’t work switch to jpg to the first card and fax to the second. If your camera only has one card, try shooting raw + jpg. Hope that helps.

  • @DanCantero

    Hey Douglas! If you only have 1 catalog, you can just open up Lightroom like you normally do and kick off the tethered session from within that catalog. The images will be imported directly into Lightroom as you take the photos. It works just like when you import from a memory card. You can then move them around into different folders just like a normal import. Hope that makes sense. If it doesn't please let me know. Dan

    Hi Dan! Is it possible to also save a copy on the camera card as I use another iMac for editing?

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Freddy. Yes, by default if you have a card in the camera it will also save the file to the card also. However, if you edit on a different iMac I would recommend you do the following.... From lightroom, save the catalogue (from the tethered iMac) to a USB drive and then copy it to the iMac you are going to be using for editing. When you try to open it on the editing iMac (the editing one) it will complain that it cannot find the files. Now copy the files from the tethered iMac (not the card) to the editing iMac. You can now re-link the files by right mouse clicking on the preview image and telling Lightroom where the new files are. This will keep any ratings or edits you do on the tethered iMac. I hope this makes sense. If it doesn't let me know as it sounds like a good video to make.

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    3 жыл бұрын

    Just to add to this...... when shooting tethered your iMac will save the image files with a different name format to what the camera saves on the card. This is why when you export the catalogue and then re-import it is expecting the file format used on your tethered machine and not the file name the camera uses on the card. A bit confusing so if you don't understand let me know and I am happy to make a video to show this.

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Isabella. Thanks for your question. The best way to end the tethered session is to go File -> Tethered Capture -> End Tethered Capture This will end the session properly although most of the time I just exit lightroom or turn the camera off and it seems to do this automatically. I've never lost any shots doing it any of these ways. To make sure that you are in fact getting the images, you can navigate to your file location folder. If you go to 7:10 in the video, you'll see the location listed about half way down the screen. This is where your files are being saved to. Simply navigate to this location and you can check if the files are there. I hope this helps but if it's still not clear just let me know. Dan

    Does L.R. allow you to teather from the computer to a big screen t.v. in real time so you can see even larger images as you shoot? I just got a Canon R5 to replace my 5D MK IV. With the old camera, I shot directly teathered to the t.v. and it was great. Trting the same set-up with the R5, the image appears on the t.v. , but the camera viewfinder is bypassed completely. You'd have to ise the t.v. as the viewfinder - not a good option :)

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    Жыл бұрын

    This is a really interesting point. I am currently overseas travelling and can't do the actual testing until I get back but this does not sound like a good solution. The only thing that I can suggest at this time is that you can experiment with the settings for the view finder display. I don't have the R5 (I have the R5C which is similar) On my camera, you can find the settings under the Spanner and then option 3. (Screen/Viewfinder display) You will see some options in there. I don't think this will do exactly what you are looking for but it might work for you.

    Ahh! hold on. I think I misunderstood the question. Are you planning to use the iPad version of Lightroom and tether to a camera? If so, I don't think it supports tethering. From what I know, only lightroom classic supports tethering. What you can do is sync your images withLightroom mobile. that means that all images will not display on your iPad. It's really not a good way to do it in my opinion. As it stands today, the only practical way to tether is straight into a computer. If you need to have the images also go into an iPad I would recommend going with something like Capture one that does this much more efficiently and gives you a lot more control. Hope that helps

    How do you set Lightroom to ONLY show Jpgs? Or ONLY raw files?

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey! Really good question. Here is the problem. Lightroom will only accept what the camera sends to it. If you tried to get lightroom to do this, you would still have to send the RAW file and get Lightroom to convert it so it would actually slow down the process. This is what I've done to get around the problem. I shoot Canon (5D and 1D). In canon it allows me to change the file format when it saves to the card. One of those options is JPG + RAW. If I do this, then the camera seems to only send the JPG to Lighroom. If I set it to RAW+JPG it will send the RAW. Whatever I set the first one to be is what it will send out. I'm not sure that this applies to all other camera manufacturers but it seems to work for me using it this way. I hope that helps.

  • @DanCantero

    Hi Lynne, it will depend on your camera but.... when you start a tethered session, you will have the floating bar in Lightroom. In there you will see the option to activate live view. There'll be a button labelled "LIVE" (it is to the left of the shutter speed). Click this button to enable the live view function. Once you've done that, you see the little arrows that you can use to change your focus forward and backwards. Note, you will need to have your camera in autofocus mode for this to work. This is all dependant on your camera being supported with live view in Lightroom. What camera and computer are you using?

    Hi! The camera will auto focus on the focus point you selected. Even if you use the shutter button inside of lightroom while tethered. What most photographers will do is to engage live live inside of lightroom and manually focus. This is better because you can really dial in the focussing. You should see the Live view option on the floating bar once you start a tethered session. I hope that is helpful. Dan

    Just discovered your video. I have a Canon R5 and an old MACBOOK PRO 2014. I use Lightroom 6 resident on my Mac because I don't want to pay Adobe a monthly fee since I am just a volunteer shooting at my church. Lightroom 6 cannon read the CR3 files so I have to run them thru a converter to change them to a .dng FILE so I can see them and edit them. I noticed your camera was actually capturing in .dng. Is that your camera setting or do you have some sort of Lightroom preset that is doing that for you? For Mother's Day they want me to set up a Photo Booth to capture the moms and upload to our church photo page, i.e. ShootProof, immediately. I'm thinking I am going to have to shoot in .jpg and then do some sort of basic edit using a preset upon capture. It also looks like I can use the Web setting to send directly to an FTP site? Anyway... if anyone has a workflow they can suggest to start with an R5, the tether cable and supplies, direct into Lightroom as a .jpg with some basic editing/noise reduction to then upload out of Lightroom maybe every 10 photos or so - I could sure use some help. Thank you.

  • @DanCantero

    Hi, thanks for checking out the video. Sounds like a very specific setup is needed. The only thing that comes to mind is to shoot JPG (like you said) into lightroom. There is a shootproof plugin for lightroom that allows you to publish into shootproof directly which might work. The only thing is that publishing requires you to actually click on the publish button. This is after you've applied any presets. Regarding cables, I would stick to the Tether tools as it is bright orange and will help with people not tripping over it as well as being a really long cable. I should have a link in the description of the video for the cable. I hope this helps. Let me know how you go. Dan

    Hi Mira, congratulation with your purchase! It's a great camera. Your are 100% right. Using a USB cable is the way to go. To be honest, Wi-Fi is much slower than using the USB cable so I always use the cable even if the camera has Wi-Fi. The ideal situation is to connect it with USB cable and then do a tethered session into Lightroom. Once you are tethered and started the session, there is a little rectangular button on the left side of the floating window (next to the shutter control button) if you click on this the camera will go into live view. Let me know how you go. This seems to be a popular topic. I was thinking of doing a dedicated video to show how this works. Let me know how you go as I can at least write a quick article at www.ministryofphoto.com to show you how this works.

    Hey Jim, when you say white out do you mean something like a headshot photograph with a totally white background? If so, you need a seperate flash pointed at your background to make it completely white. If that is not what you mean let me know and I'm happy to try to help you if I can.

  • @DanCantero

    @DanCantero

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Jim, if you plug in your camera but you don't have any software driving the camera, it basically turns the camera into a big card reader and won't let you operate the camera. On canon cameras, it will just show you an icon of a computer on the camera's LCD. When you install something like Lightroom, it takes over that connection and releases the control of the camera. It also works with Capture one which is another application much like lightroom. Do you have lightroom? If no I highly recommend it. Adobe used to do a photographer's deal where you get lightroom and photoshop as part of the deal. I'm sure the deal is still around and it used to be around $10 per month. It might be work just doing it for 1 month and seeing if you like it. I'd be interested in knowing how you go. If decide against trying out lightroom, only then would I recommend putting on the Canon software again. I just would not have both as it will cause problems.

  • @DanCantero

    Have you checked your white balance? If the white balance is wrong, it will make even the perfect white a bit yellow or orange. If you do end up using lightroom slide the white balance slider towards the blue side to try to balance out the yellow. Aperture also has this feature but I haven't used it for so long I don't remember where it is. Also, make sure you shoot in RAW and not in JPG or you won't be able to do it. Let me know how you go.
