Testing the Strange Airbag Suspension System! Ep 6 - 1939 Hudson Rat Rod Part 16
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
We find out if the system works! The final video in a series about fabricating a front suspension airbag system that incorporates torsion bars as well. This relates to the wishbone suspension of pick-ups like Isuzu, Nissan Hardbody and Ford Courier.

Well Div, you went and done it! You now have the softness of adjustable air bags while driving that now, can be infinitely matched to the stiffness of the factory Isuzu torsion bars... You are within the reach of elusive dual action softness of the "Forrest" roads. I have witnessed your previous drives and your backside will benefit. A new invention; "Air Cushioned Dual Torsional" front suspension. File your patent on it quickly!

I see an access door in the back of the cab. Right in front of the bolts! Just a round hole with a round piece of metal held on with a few screws.... So far you're at awesome on the meter! "Keep on truckin"
Thank you, very informative and imaginative. Looking forward to seeing more
That is so amazing Div! Can’t wait for the next episode 👍👍👍
Im glad you were listening. I was saying lift the front end and you'll get the rod out!👍🇨🇦

Div - Very awesome build. I use these airbags every day. One thing that you may wish to do is put positive stops on your arms so that you don't accidentally over-inflate the airbags - which is easy to do because you sometimes don't think about it and "BOOM". It would be easy to do with the space that you have directly behind the suspension arms - you could make a cam-lock that seats into the space. Also on the airbag plate that mounts to the frame - you will need to account for the rubber of the airbag rolling over that side as well when you compress them, much the same as it does on the rotating arm. There could be a propensity for the rubber to catch on the plate and get cut. We normally put a 1/2" thick diameter plate the same diameter as the steel on the airbag to "offset" it and allow for the compression distance. Very awesome build and excellent engineering and design!

Hello Diff. Great stuff you have there. I love seeing it articulate. Mechanical art as it were. Yes the give for the air bags is much more than that of the spring steel. The torsion bars will not come into play until after the bags have been inflated to a high pressure. If that pressure on the cusp of ride load and road surface you will have a dynamic situation that I don't think will be problematic. Very interesting. Thanks for the brain teaser.

I’d love it if you took some of that industrial/military look for inspiration and made a version of that kit for inside the cab of the truck. Before you said you weren’t going to use that kit for your truck I was thinking, “PLEASE use that in your truck”.

Great video Div, love the design of the bag system. I did a similar valve system on my first rat rod and ran into an issue with body roll. when you go around a corner all the air is pushed across to the back on the inside of the corner causing a lot of body lean. My fix was another valve to isolate the left from the right valve.

I had the same idea not same design but air bags for the torsion keys on a 2006 gmc and it was the smoothest riding 2500 pickup you ever rode in ..it had a bit of body roll but it worked well I drove it over 30 thousand miles before selling the truck with no issues so its safe to say the concept will actually work..good job👌

Looking great, Div! Cool look with the bags behind the cab. I was one of thse concerned with the spring rate. It might be too soft, but again, I hope I'm wrong. Really good shocks might help too, and a soft ride can be very comfortable. The first rod I built had unusually soft springs, and it rode very nicely.

This is beautiful. Just the inspiration I needed. I’m in the early stages of building a ‘59 Chevy truck into an all wheel drive Chevy Tahoe. I want to maintain the 4x4. So, the oem torsion bars are a problem with slamming the truck on bags. I had thought of building a tower in the location between the torsion keys. But it will be tight under the front seats. I could extend those bars back as you have done and build an opposing bag system as you have done in the bed of the truck. Genius! Thanks
