Testing the new Atari 2600+ with a selection of obscure 2600 games and controllers.

I pick a few games and controllers to test out the Atari 2600+ compatibility with the original VCS.

I've had my 2600+ for a few days now I've tested 34 vintage carts, all different titles, and each one works. I did make a point to thoroughly clean the pins on each cart prior to testing. I think the Plus is a great little machine and the new joysticks for me are perfectly fine. I did order a pair of gently used vintage paddle controllers as well. Hopefully I'll be able to try those out inside of a week.

The homebrew molders at AtariAge modded 2600 Star Wars the Arcade Game to have native Trak-Ball support using the CX22 or the CX80. They did that for several games. Many were even sold in the AtariAge Store until Atari acquired AtariAge a few months ago. The ROMs are still around. You’ll want 7800 Centipede-TB. Or the ROM for it. It supports the CX22 and the CX80 even in the co-op modes.

Good video, thanks. I'm enjoying the 2600+. I have a large library of 2600 and 7800 games. You have some interesting and obscure games as well. When I tried the Smurf game, I got the exact result. I'm surprised it's listed as 'pass' on the combability list. I don't think this is a dirty contact pad issue. Activision games are particularly stubborn because their PCBs are quite thin. Thinner boards lead to much lower contact force. I've had to clean the majority of the Activision games 3 or more times; same with a few other publishers that use the thin PCBs.

Video Arcade II controllers - You can easily make an adapter for it. Get male and female DB9 connectors with solder connections, solder them back-to-back, and wrap tape around the exposed pins. Then just cut notches in the shield to accommodate the bumps on the plug. Trackballs - I had that same CX-22 trackball and mine worked OK. It was better on some games than on others. Apparently only a few games on the Atari 8-bit computers support true trackball mode, although there are supposedly a couple hacked games for the 2600 and 7800 that support it. Following an article in a magazine, I modded mine to also function as an Amiga mouse. I added two additional switches to the underside to toggle the mod on/off. I had to use two because I didn't have a 4-pole switch. I also added two addition buttons to work as the right mouse buttons. My friend had one of the trackballs with the triangular buttons. He wanted me to mod it for him, but the insides were different. While I had it open, I noticed that while my trackball had many very small "windows" on the encoder wheels, that the circuit reads to detect movement, his trackball had wheels with much larger notches in them. When I tested it out as a joystick replacement, it felt horrible to me. It was much less sensitive than mine. I don't know if this is true for all of those trackballs, or if there were different revisions of them over time. I just know that my CX-22 worked better than my friend's all black one.

Yes, the 2600+ is compatable with original paddle conollers as well as paddle controllers that were packed in with Flashback consoles by At Games. Keep in mind that original paddle controllers are 40+ yes old and may not work all that well due to corrosion built up in the pots. @300BaudStudios pop it in that 7800. You won't regret it. Probably the atari's most underrated game which would be amazing with a remake even in vr.

I wonder what Emulator are they using, I'm guessing not Stella Because it has a USB Connection inside, Someone can hack Stella on it

I believe the 2600 emulation is based on Stella but Atari doesn't specify and I cant find a reliable source. Possibly someone can elaborate.

I wonder if this doesn't have an SD card slot because that is planned for their next "updated" version and they want Atari fans to double dip.

I think Atari may want to sell cartridges. They now have an enhanced Berzerk, Mr. Run and Jump, as well as paddle controllers bundled with a combo cart. Putting an SD card on the unit would likely kill that market.

Not sure about his review. First, he comparing a smaller unit to a bigger unit and it is obvious why the differences. Secondly, he became an Amiga user after his Atari games not Atari computer, but with that said, he did keep his old system and games. Thirdly, he uses a track ball to demonstrate the games but it is clear the track ball needs a good cleaning. Fourth, he had almost all the games that caused the video game crash. The really cheap $5 and below ones. Lol Fifth, we know why they called it the 2600+. The 2600 sold tens of millions and the 7800 is not that well known. I think pitfall 2 beats smurfs in graphics, just saying. But with that said, he did more testing of games than Atari it seems so give him credit for that.

I just think they went to the trouble of making the hardware look good, but how could it possibly replace the original when a number of games in your collection and some peripherals don't work on it. If you call it the plus it should be able to do exactly what the original did and then more with a nice HD picture. The fact that you have to keep the old console hanging around in case you want to play a game that is not compatible with the new console is kind of a fail on Atari's part.

It is all about the nostalgic value; which the 2600+ captures very well. Even if the 2600+ played every game for the VCS I wouldn't part with my original systems. There are a few disappointments but overall the compatibility is quite high. I forgot to mention that all my Parker Bothers games worked as well as the Imagic games.
