The greatest thing about this video is seeing the sheer amount of homebrew programmers that make the best out of that 1977 hardware (I was born in late 1983, so go figure). Goes to show the 2600 and its contemporaries still retain their old magic. And I hope it's for many years from now.

I'm from 1988 and have an Atari obsession. I got into it just a year or 2 ago after realizing how fun it was. Had a 2600 "VCS Light Six" in the closet my whole life, only nostalgic to the small library my uncle had. Now I discovered all the other games especially after 1982. They got really good. I wasnt aware how long its lifespan was. Still finding more.

@@Lightblue2222 There's plenty of simulators online where you can play the game within your web browser. There's really no reason to have actual hardware today, the simulations are perfect. The system is simulated perfectly.

13:10 - Bee Ball, that's really cute :D At Duck Attack (39:31) I started suspecting that these are not just the original games but has some newer releases as well. A friend of mine had this Atari 2600 clone with almost all the games built in and you cycled through them with a lever. There were no title screens so I didn't know any of the games, I could only find them today by trying to describe how it played. That's how I found MASH. But for other obscure games I need to watch this whole thing. I remember liking Mr Postman for it's weird visuals and sounds (1:26:55) 2:24:01 - THAT'S IT! This was the game I was looking for! Thnk you for making this video!

AVGN Boxing? I didn't know that existed until now. I'm a fan of AVGN. Some of these games are obviously homebrews. I first played atari 2600 in 1990 at age 7 or 8. I just recently bought the atari flashback 9 and I love many of the games. It's amazing how many of these games are still fun after 35-40+ years. I love games like jungle hunt, pitfall, river raid, berserk, mario bros, popeye, space invaders, missile command, centipede, enduro and others. I don't always like every atari game, but If I dislike one it's because of the game play and not the graphics. Some people are graphic snobs who prefer only new games. But I can overlook the early graphics if the game play is good.

Thanks for evoking sweet childhood memories. I never played the Atari bec. I found the joystick difficult to control. My eldest brother (who owns the console) and other elder siblings were always the one who played for me. I esp. remember these games: Frogger; Asteroids (?); PacMan; and Midnight Rider (?). Btw, does anyone here know the title of an Atari game in which the game cartridge's design contains a labyrinth and a dragon. A key is what you must find in the game if my memory still serves me well. Anyway, thanks in advance.

Really interesting backstory about Custer's Revenge, it was probably the first video game controversy that ever made the national news. For those that don't know, the plot of the game was, you play General Custer and you have to kill Indians and make your way to an Indian women at which point you...ah...have your way with her. Needless to say not very politically correct even by 1982 standards....

Man some these games are bad, it is hard to describe what it was like to wait all year long for Christmas to roll a round and get a video game and pop it into the 2600 just to see how bad it was... they were so expensive and back then all you had to go off was the box art from the Sears or JC Penny catalog.

Unfortunately, of the 500 or so titles released for the system only about a hundred are any good, thanks to effective use of sound, simplicity, and tight programming. Between all the companies that were just jumping on the bandwagon and lacklustre programming, it's no wonder so many games look awful, sound awful, and are as dry as the Gobi desert.

Yeah pretty much. There were maybe 25 games that were truly great and innovative. Another 50-75 that were pretty solid and the rest were varying degrees of boring, repetitive, near unplayable or just cheap clones of the good games.
