Trying to catch the 15 lbs rainbow trout has been a real challenge. I haven't seen it since we stocked her into the pond in the early spring. I use my spin fishing tackle and rod to try to catch all the rainbow trout from my pond, and even retool the $2 gill net to make it work so it catches fish.

    The fish you call small would be massive in my area, at least for the wild ones. I really want a trout pond some day, but I’d prefer to stock brook trout. I would supplement their diet with breeding bugs. I have a worm compost that produces tons of worms, and I’d set up containers outside that would catch soldierfly larvae by using decaying material to attract them. I would also have some disgusting buckets of rotting meat with holes poked in the bottom, where flies will lay eggs and maggots will fall out the bottom, feeding the fish. Basically getting creative with my waste disposal systems and turning all of the organic waste into fish protein(or chickens, or whatever livestock). Also apparently worms nest below the frost line and essentially hibernate.

    So I was just thinking about the pond and I know how much y'all love to fish but also like to ice skate so u definitely have the space on the property u should make your own ice rink away from the pond that way you can ice fish the pond in the winter

  • @TheWoodedBeardsman

    That's an excellent idea. I bet we could make a much bigger rink if it doesn't need to be too deep.

  • @JayLee-od8ob

    @JayLee-od8ob

    I don't think you need depth for a skating rink. You keep spraying water from a hose and sprinkler on level flat ground. The spray makes layers of ice. After a few days of intermittent watering you'll have a nice smooth thick rink. I used to turn the garden into a rink. Use snow to build edges around the rink to hold the water.
