    Thanks a lot for the test, the through-the-lens video and your comments, you are one of the first to properly cover this. Very impressive results considering that FSR was just modded on at the end of the rendering process. Properly implemented in the game by the developers before rendering UI and applying post-processing it should be even better, so I hope that a lot of VR games will be updated with FSR soon. I'm running pretty much a minimal specs GPU for Fallout 4 VR and can only dream of your regular framerates, so my VR experience will probably benefit even more from FSR in SteamVR. I'm off to installing it right now.

    Really nice detail and analysis in this video. I tried this FSR in my heavily modded Skyrim VR and it works really well. I ran the default FSR settings but felt the image over sharpened so will need to play with that. I have a Quest 2 and was running wireless through Virtual Desktop. Will also try with Airlink. My rig is RTX2060 with an i7 so definitely in the modest performance area.

    I think the most interesting applications for this are people with higher resolution headsets like me (Reverb G2), or video cards that are frame buffer limited (IE, any card that is 8GB VRAM or lower). I had a noticeable increase in frame times even on a RX 6800XT.. things feel more responsive.. but I also noticed a average 3-4GBs less of VRAM usage. The less VRAM you have, the more something like FSR is going to make sense.

    Late to the party but gonna contribute anyways! I have a 1650 super in my system and use vrchat the most in terms of vr games. So as many may know the frame cuts happen quite frequently. Due to my headset the max I can get is 72, and that often gets cut to 36 if i'm looking at the wrong thing. So I installed FSR VR and ran it initially at 0.59, with 0.93 for sharpness. I can safely say that my framerate dips have stopped completely! The only minor issue was a slight blur on things like text or detailed things that are far away. So I might mess with the settings a bit to fix that. But otherwise it looks pretty identical!

  • @nara4420
    @nara44202 жыл бұрын

    I've tried it in VRChat, and it helps in many cases but ... Whenever the map has no fine-grained stuff it looks quite good and the performance is increased significant. When i enter a full club location it is even better than to disable shaders and particles. So i can turn all options on with FSR where i turned them off before. It looks better and the FPS is better. Thats really nice ! But in maps with small leafs or small ripples on a water-surface FSR begins to struggle - you'll see a strong shimmer which seems to be some kind of moire-effect. That is something you don't want to see very long. So it depends on the maps which you enter, but it can only be modified before you start.

For skyrim VR this allowed me to add more mods like heavy ENB and for Fallout 4 VR it allowed me to increase the super sampling and get better FPS. Too bad it's not working for more recent games though.

    @@bobdole2184 yea i think upscaling is a going to be the next important thing in computer graphics. Ive been saying this since dlss 1.0, sure we can improve performance of gpus but with ai upscaling the performance is exponential. Not only that but we can use DLSS as a way to improve quality with any resolution above 1440p being upscaled due to increased sub-pixel data.

  • @archeide962

    @archeide962

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes it's true. I noticed also an increased shimmering that the TAA is not able to resolve. I guess because FSR has no temporal coherency. DLSS doesn't seem to have such problem in no man's sky. I think the great idea of the FSR VR module is the radius feature: it simulates a kind of foveated rendering that is difficult to detect on VR headset with fresnel lenses such as oculus quest where more pixels density is needed in the middle of screen (where the real FSR upscaling is applied) due to barrel distortion of fresnel lenses - which usually need us to apply super sampling on all the screen just for increasing the pixel densitity in the middle. In some way, we render the image at the native resolution of the headset then let the FSR do a "fake" super sampling at the middle of the screen only.

    My counter point to his conclusion that I feel he under represented is that it seems like it will probably always help frame timings even on high end rigs. I have a very high end rig and I don't drop frames but consistency is king and even high end rigs still enjoy benefits of higher efficiency. So I am gladly he slightly covered that though I feel its a bigger point than he made it. My specs AMD 5950x, Tuf6900XT oc I may do a video on my result s if people want when I try it but he is right it will have the best benefit on lower end hardware running headsets and supers high end Headsets. But super win for FSR and all Gamers I think! Good video though cbutters Tech love it.

    Yeah I agree with you on these points. There are areas where it can make a huge difference even on high end gaming rigs...if I had a higher resolution headset; FSR would be a game-changer no doubt. And FSR still is a game change for Fallout4 Even, on a high end rig; since that game just kinda sucks regarding performance. I just wanted to make the point that if you have no performance issues in your game right now; this isn't going to do much for you. But there are so many areas where FSR can flesh out your experience when your performance is lacking, high end or low end.

    I used to run Euro truck simulator 2 at 400% supersampling @45 Hz reprojected with the Index and a 3080. I then set up FSR to run at quater resolution (performance preset) and raised supersampling to 1600% (!) It doesnt look as good as true 1600% ofcourse but it does give another notch of sharpness for sure! (And Im not using the sharpening filter in FSR only the upscaling algorithm) Visually Id say its like adding maybe 25% supersampling but for free.

    Unfortunately, with a render scale of 0.77 (~ Ultra Quality), I notice the shimmering and general image degradation quite a lot. I wouldn't say it was subtle. I tend to test out new builds as they arrive on Github, and then eventually remove it again, as I seem to like CAS over RCAS.

  • @crimson-foxtwitch2581

    @crimson-foxtwitch2581

    2 жыл бұрын

    IMO, FSR is only worth your time if a game natively supports MSAA, or has it automatically baked into the render pipeline. (e.g. Duck Season) FSR’s image output works extremely well if you’re using 4X MSAA: it’s worth setting the quality to 0.73, sometimes lower, just to use that MSAA. Do note, however, that while FSR does receive similar boosts on TAA-enabled games, I personally prefer using ReShade’s SMAA and CAS shaders due to the egregious levels of artifacts inherent to TAA.

    Very nice. BTW, you should upgrade that Index, that resolution in 2021 doesn't cut it anymore. My VP2, Reverb G1 and Quest 2 all look a lot better than the Index. I'm "only" running a 3080, and for many games, specially sims, it doesn't cut it to go smoothly at 90 or 120 fps.

  • @cbutters

    @cbutters

    2 жыл бұрын

    I've reviewed the G2 on my channel, I couldn't handle the smaller FOV and tight "sweet spot" and especially having WMR drift trying to use it with my Valve Index controllers. I also played with the Vive Pro 2, resolution clarity is awesome, lenses are bad, horizontal FOV is awesome, but only if you sacrifice comfort with a slim gasket; Vertical FOV is actually worse than index; comfort is not nearly as good, mic is awful, audio is worse, pass through cameras are garbage; to top it off the display failed on me 3 days in. So I returned it.... amazing display; but that's about it. I do have a Quest 2 and I use that when I want to do wireless VR. :) I just want Valve Index 2 with improved resolution... nothing else comes close for comfort, ease of use, geometric accuracy and sense of presence; IMO.
