Testastretta Engine Build Video 4 - Fitting the timing belts

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In this last video of the mini series following the Testastretta 749 engine I fit the belts
This is different technique to the earlier desmo engines as all the Testastretta engines in the 749, 999, 998 and 996R series of bikes can use cam locking tools to set the standard timing position to allow the belts to be fitted
This video follows the process of setting the tools up to fit the belts and then tension setting the new belts
If enjoy the video chuck a like and hit subscribe for more content coming up soon.

Wow, did not know about the cam pulley tool. Chris Kelley is a good friend and having watched his videos on testastrettas found the failure of pulley marks to be a line up method not very reassuring. Old desmoquatros were a piece of cake. Looked up tool on Ducati Kaemna and then found one new set on eBay. Damn good tip. Thanks, Rich

Hi Rich, Glad the video was of use to you, I try and take the mystique out of maintaining our lovely bikes. You can align the timing marks once you have the tool in place if you want so you have another method, I never bother as I always use the tool to align the cams initially.

I have never seen those cam holder tools, they are really cool! I've always just used the old timing belts to mark the pulleys but obviously with this build without previous belts that's not possible. I'd love to get ahold of some of those tools though just in case, can't ever have too many Ducati tools!

Nice video. That is how the Ducati W/shop manual shows how to do it with those tools. It's the same principle as used on VW TDI engines, as it allows for perfect re-timing of the camshaft/crankshaft relationship. Also, it removes any influence on the belt from tension/friction caused between the shafts. This prevents corruption of the frequency measurement, since the camshaft sprockets are free to move during the procedure.

Firstly I'll say I'm subscribed and I enjoy all the video's and are a good source of info for heaps of us, however this belt install procedure has an element missing I'd consider important. The factory cam tools have locked in the cams to clock them at TDC but you dont have the crank accurately locked at TDC, I believe there is a factory locking tool for this as well. Cams could easily be advanced or retarded to TDC, without the extra tool. JMO :)

  • @DesmoWerx

You are correct there is a tool to hold the bottom end in place, however its quite hard to turn over the bottom end without the turning tool once its built up and I do this often enough that I am comfortable in the way I am doing it. Pre 749/999 there was no tool and that's how I cut my teeth doing it. That being said at only £40 its worth buying the tool if you are doing it yourself.

Hi, very usefull video. I made the belt replacement in a Monster 821 following the manual and it is exactly the same procedure, but I got a question. I can adjust the belt tension to 110Hz but when I make tight the little screws from the pulleys and I take out the pulleys locking tool, if I turn a few times the cranksaft and I measure the belt tension again it is around 140Hz, is it normal? I am thinking about adjust the tension to 110Hz just moving the tensioner, lather on a few crankshaft turns, and measure again, what do you think? Thanks again for the video!!

  • @swagger897

Hey there. First video I've seen a tool like this that locks the cams instead of the pulleys. I tried a method similar to that of Mr. Kelley's way, rotated each cylinder to TDC, marked the belts, counted dots between marks, transferred marks to new belts, installed the belts with the marks matching both the pulley and the new belts. I've ridden the bike only twice since, both times less than 15 minutes. Lately though I've been unable to start the bike, and part of me now questions whether or not the method I used was correct, or if the tension has been held by the eccentric pulleys, as I reused what looked like a new fuji nut. I assumed that with all the gaps between the marks there should be no difference in timing, would you agree to that? If not, I might need to pick up a set of these tools and figure out how to properly time the bike. I'm sure that I'm getting fuel (unsure of PSI) to each cylinder, spark to each cylinder, but compression and timing is still unknown to me at the moment. Hate dumping questions on people's videos but just trying to get ideas as to what may have gone wrong...

  • @DesmoWerx

    @DesmoWerx

    4 жыл бұрын

The methodology works for aligning the new belts with the position of the old belts, you can put the timing out by over or under tension of the new belt but this would alter the timing by only a couple of degrees which would unlikely present the issues shown. If you had the the wheel move by a tooth though this would be a larger margin of error in timing. I would check the timing to eliminate this as a potential cause but would also check all the other basics such as, plugs, air filter, coil connectors, ignition pick up etc

You can align the wheels to check timing marks against the head cover joint if set correctly The owner of this engine is happy to time off the cam tool rather than the wheels so we did not reset them To reset them we could have timed the cams, them completely loosened the pulley wheels and re-positioned them to use the marks if needed.
