    Great video. Call me paranoid but I never put flame to cast aluminum . Use a heat gun . Just me . Warm up the entire case with heat gun ..... bearings practically fall out . Blind hole puller gets in there no issues ....also when installing new bearings they go in the freezer for a few hours , warm up the cases .... bearings will drop in without need of a press .....

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx8 күн бұрын

    I do have a heat gun as well, however never had a problem with either approach of heating the cases. 😊 I mainly use the press to ensure that the bearings are fully seated and squared up true, I used to use the same approach you have used but you then have to wait a while for the cases to cool down to properly preload crank and set up the gear box.

    Great Video! I just found out that my s2r 800 has glitter/metallic oil, other than that it runs good. Tried flushing it but no change. How would you proceed? Teardown first and see whats wrong? Ride it till it fails? Find a different engine?

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx8 күн бұрын

    What did you find in oil filter itself? Did the sump plug have lots of material as well? Personally I would flush the engine a couple of times with a cheap oil to see if the metallic debris reduces before I committed to a full strip. As for what to do it comes down to mechanical ability, I would rebuild so you retain matching numbers, plus you know its good, another engine may have its own issues.

    Hello I really need your help. I try to restart my 996 (after 12 years in a garage) and I was working on the front fork when I discovered that both right and left "dark grey bush or washer" of the collar spring or spring coupling -are broken -> sorry there are so many different ways to call 1 part (we can see the part in your video at 7:14). DUCATI have stopped to produce this spare part and it seems to be unavailable everywhere. Have you already change this spare part when you refurbish a fork ??

  • @serialgolfer

    Did you get round to splitting the cases in the end? I have rebuilt 2 of these engines before, 1299s and panigale R which basically have the same architecture and I am not sure how it’s possible to split the cases without the cylinder liner puller tool from ducati which is quite expensive! I ended up buying one from the dealer as I couldn’t find any for sale!

    Any suggestions for my 01 monster 750 Output shaft bearing on lh side of case failed Bearing cage broke , ball bearing fell out and bearing race fractured in pieces. No damage to parts but bearing mounting hole got a little marred. Gonna use loctite 660. Should I just replace the bad bearing or should I do the opposite side as well?

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx21 күн бұрын

    Personally if I were taking the cases apart as I needed to replace the bearing I would look at replacing them all. Other than the main bearings they are quite inexpensive to replace, and if its apart anyway why not take the time to cover all bases.

    Firstly I'll say I'm subscribed and I enjoy all the video's and are a good source of info for heaps of us, however this belt install procedure has an element missing I'd consider important. The factory cam tools have locked in the cams to clock them at TDC but you dont have the crank accurately locked at TDC, I believe there is a factory locking tool for this as well. Cams could easily be advanced or retarded to TDC, without the extra tool. JMO :)

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx21 күн бұрын

    You are correct there is a tool to hold the bottom end in place, however its quite hard to turn over the bottom end without the turning tool once its built up and I do this often enough that I am comfortable in the way I am doing it. Pre 749/999 there was no tool and that's how I cut my teeth doing it. That being said at only £40 its worth buying the tool if you are doing it yourself.

    Hello 👋🏼 , I have a Ducati 1098. I fell over on the grass on the race track on my left side. It bent the gear lever. I replaced it. I no longer have a stop in first gear. If I keep pressing in first gear, the gearbox rattles. Normally there would be a stop in first gear so that you can't press any further. In my case, you can press and it rattles. All other gears can be shifted normally. What could this be? How or where is the mechanical stop for first gear? If someone knows anything about the gearbox, it would help me a lot. Where is the stop for first gear? Thank you very much for your help. Gary

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx7 күн бұрын

    There is a stop within the channels on the shift drum, although there will be a certain amount of play in this, not enough to go past the gear but certainly enough to put pressure on the gearbox and make noise. My initial area to check would be that the shift fork has not been bent or dislodged due to the crash, if this is not set correctly it will have an impact on how far the shift drum can and cannot move.

    Is it customary to replace the head bolts on re-assembly? My 748 SPS has some 200psi compression (cold), which is higher than standard as far as I know, and just wondered what the normal methods are for increasing compression and if that effects the type of head bolts Ducati uses?

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx29 күн бұрын

    I have not used any other type of head bolts and nuts as the Ducati ones have not been an issue for me. Your compression reading is high. Compression can easily be increased by using thinner cylinder base gaskets or if you are on the earlier head gasket which is a 1mm thick gasket you could use a thinner later one. If you did this work you would need to check squish and Valve to Piston clearance.

  • @tim2muntu954
    @tim2muntu95428 күн бұрын

    I think a past owner of my 748SPS has used a thinner head gasket - with that high compression she's hard to start. If I do tear her down, could I re-use the headbolts? (or do they stretch in the original tightening?). Your channel is so helpful to us lovers of these desmoquatros.

    Hello Desmo, many thanks for your awesome videos & content ! 👏 With reference to this video in particular, i.e. adding an oil cooler to a Ducati that didn't come with one - will this work on a 2012 Ducati Monster 696 ? The lower case on my 2012 Monster 696's engine has the two "plugs" for oil output & input & even the frame has the brackets for an oil cooler. I have an oil cooler from a 2012 Monster 1100 Evo - just wanted to know if I should be wary of anything while fitting it to my 696 ? Any pearls of wisdom are appreciated 👍

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx29 күн бұрын

    I have never specifically done it on a 2 valve as most of my work until recently has been working/modifying 4 valve engines. But if its the same as for the conversion on the 4 valve it may be possible, all you are doing is extending the oil path/route by adding a cooler, it would obviously use slightly more oil at each fill up.

    11:10 This video is really clear and helpful, thanks! Only one thing I’m confused by, my 2010 848 (non Evo) has different cam positions for the vertical cylinder at horizontal TDC. They actually sit in the same position as an 848 evo or 1198. Did Ducati change the cams/cam locks on the last of the 848s?

  • @DesmoWerx
    @DesmoWerx29 күн бұрын

    Not that I am aware of, the 848 and 1098 had the same timing tool positions throughout its production run as far as I am aware. The 848 Evo and 1198 changed the positioning for the timing tools. Might be worth checking if you have 848 Evo cams fitted.

    @@DesmoWerx Thanks, will check in the winter season when I check valve clearances.
