TEST YOUR OUTBOARD MOTOR RPM's - FAIL
I wanted to test the RPM's of my Honda 2.3 HP outboard motor. I purchased a Tach/Hour Meter on Amazon to test my outboard motor.
The manual did not clearly state which code to use for my 4 stroke, single cylinder outboard, but the seller told be what code to use for my motor.
Let me show you how the tach/hour meter works and what my final test results were.

Mine does the same thing I have an 18 four stroke Nissan I’m not going to mess with it any more. Junk.
Well Gerry my Father in Law used to tease my Mother in Law for buying stuff that didn't work simply because it was on sale. He refereed to them as Wrapped Turds because if you wrap a turd in pretty paper and put it on sale she would buy it. It has been many years since and I have purchased my share of wrapped turds over the years when I buy something I think is great just to find out it's almost worthless so don't feel alone.

Steve, they are your trophies!
Many 4 stroke outboards spark on the exhaust stroke (wasted spark) as well as after the compression stroke.. so the reading is doubled for some settings because more the unit detects twice as many spark pulses as it expects.

Peter, that is why that tester is designed for 4 stroke motors
I bought the cheapest one on Amazon with a replaceable battery. It works fine on my 2 stroke, 2 cylinder Johnson. I used the first code, 01. These Chinese tachs are hit or miss I guess!

No expert here, but what if code 1 was correct and since you say the motor used to go faster, the 3,000 something rmp you got at wot is right and that you need to adjust the throttle up? Just my two cents. I have one of these, but haven’t put in on my old outboard yet.

Throttle could not be adjusted higher. It was at WOT and the readings were not even in the correct range. Gerry
no way its supposed to ide at 2000, i dont car what that paper says, idle is between 700 and 800

How long have you been working for Honda?
Maybe it was meant for airplane engines.

I bought another, different one. That one works great. The only thing the one in the video can do is to fill a trash can.
