THANK YOU for making this video! For those in the comments asking what setting to use for their two or four stroke engine, you simply NEED to find out how often it fires. Some four strokes fire once per rev, and some two cylinder two strokes fire twice (JS550 for example).

I purchased one of these for my Husqvarna 128 LD weedeater. The manual says the idle rpm's are between 2800-3200, so I have the rpm's set to 3,000, but the max speed should be set to 11,000 rpm's. My question is, how would I get this techometer to show 11,000 rpm's?

remember some. many? all? small engines FIRE EVERY TIME THE MAGNET GOES BY THE COIL even if it is a 4 cycle engine. the extra plug firing is on exhaust stroke so it does nothing but spark the plug as it is in overlap of exhaust valve closing and intake valve opening at TOP DEAD CENTER with no fresh fuel in the cyl to ignite... the next revolution will have fuel/air in it to ignite. so that is where ppl get confused in directions... need to pick the on ... actually 2 that states "fires once per revolution" as the plug is firing EVERY REVOLUTION on coil type small engines, just no fuel/air to ignite on exhaust closing/intake opening of the 4 cycle engine so nothing happens with the spark, just wasted spark... but the meter "reads" the spark so ... need to pick #2 "fires EVERY REVOLUTION of the motor" ... even on 4 cycle engine. it wud be the same on 2 cycle engine too as it too fires EVERY TIME the piston comes to TOP DEAD CENTER, but there is fuel/air in the cyl every time the piston comes to TOP DEAD CENTER so there is a power stroke on the 2 cycle every time piston comes up... but the setting on the meter would be the same ... #2.... fires every time the piston comes up.

Sorry about keep making comments but needed to clarify. since I know that a honda metropolitan idles 1500 - 2000 rpm the only thing that made sense is setting mine to match this rpm. The only way is by setting it to 1 on the tach setting. Other wise any other setting is at least twice or too high.

Well, that engine is more advanced than a lawn mower. As i can see in the wiring diagram for that Honda Metropolitan, they have an ECU that triggers the ignition, and therefore it may very well ignite only half of the time a lawnmower engine would.

HI ED! YOU WOULD LEAVE IT IN DEFAULT MODE2. AND THE CABLE WRAPS AROUND 1 IGNITION WIRE 4 TIMES. HOPE THIS HELPS!

I used this tachometer to set the idle speed on my 2 cylinder 2 stroke Trabant 601! Then I tested it on my Citroen 2CV which is a 2 cylinder 4 stroke engine but uses a wasted spark ignition system. I got about what I expected on both engines. I figured I'd have to do some dividing or multiplying to get the correct RPM but it was spot on. I was using a Sears engine analyzer. I would have to set it to the 4 cylinder mode then watch the needle bounce around, write down the lowest reading and the highest reading, add the two together and divide by 2 to get the average.

Firing occurs on the power stroke in a 4 cycle engine. So that means after 4 strokes you have two revolutions of the crank for every ignition. Power stroke, when ignition occurs. 1/2 revolution, Exhaust stroke, another 1/2 revolution, intake stroke 1/2 rev. , Compression stroke 1/2 rev. for a total of two revolutions of the crankshaft. So this should equate to every other revolution (2 rev. per ignition), which is option 3. The instruction manual is lacking info to select firing for proper rpm display depending if you have 2 stroke or 4 stroke. If you have a 4 stroke lawnmower and select code 2 you will display the wrong rpm. I thought you may want to know this.

Ok, let me explain this. Your theory is correct, but we have a very simple engine design here, on the lawn mower for example, where the ignition fires every rpm. Means you get ignition twice as often as is needed.

just like on a harley , but you can use a single fire ignition but it wont have the cool sound of a harley

Mine is still working on my lawn mower, and i made this video 6 years ago. It probably dies right after i write this. If you need an hour meter for like oil changes (mine does every 50 hours), then it's great.

@@mygiguser hahah WOW, 6 years. But I think youmade a mistake may be. For lawn mower which is 4 stroke engine, it should be "03"- every other revolution. And for 2 stroke engines like weed eater(weed wacker) it might be 02- once per revolution. Isn't it right?

Code one is every revolution as in two-stroke. Code 2 is every second revolution as in four stroke. In other words, a four. Stroke fires every second revolution, so you if set on one It will only read half the revolution speed, example motor rev at 3000 per minute will only show 1500 per minute on the meter.

@@pdevonport7266 If you set it on one it will read every revolution so it will show 3000 if it's 3000. A 4 stroke will read every 2 revolutions meaning you have 4 revolutions so you multiply by 2, so it will read 4 revolutions. If you set it on one it will read every revolution showing and measuring 1 revolution which will be actual read once, one revolution. If I set it to 2 it will read once for 2 revolutions. So if you set it to one on a 4 stroke it will think it's been 4 revolutions and will be reading 4 times higher or 4 times 3,000 which is 12,000 rpm. Do you understand this? As you can see not enough info is given. If I'm reading a pulse from the flywheel when it rotates I also have to prevent firing on the intake stroke. Every rotation a coil gets a pulse from the flywheel which is the ignition pickup providing spark to the sparkplug. So it's not so simple. The only way to be 100 percent sure is a test instrument tachometer for a scooter which I can't find.

I found written instructions by googling for "S1 S2 tachometer" (without the quotes). I honestly cannot understand the RPM setting. In a 2-stroke engine there is always one spark per revolution, therefore you would set it to value 2. In a 4-stroke engine there is one spark every other revolution, therefore you would set it to 3. However setting 1 supposedly means that there are two sparks per every one revolution. But there exists no engine where the spark plug fires twice per every revolution of the crankshaft. What on earth do these settings actually mean?

Jaakko Oksa they count the revolution of the crankshaft, not the camshaft. A 2 cycle engine fires at every revolution of the crankshaft, a 4 cycle fires usually every other revolution. But you could have engines that ignite the sparkplug during the work cycle and the exhaust cycle.

@@mygiguser Sorry, I was in a hurry and I wrote camshaft, when I meant crankshaft (two stroke engines do now even have a camshaft since they have no valves). Therefore, for a two stroke engine, such as a chainsaw, the correct setting is "2", am I right?

you are right ,, but they do on small engines , harleys and older cars even chainsaws , lawn mowers , weedeaters , but not on modern cars the computer controls the fire at single fire

@@meanderingmike7640 I am with ya. My hour meter, I ended up stripping the insulation back, exposing the two fine internal wires (I did not strip these wires individually). Then, I wrapped the two fine wires, about 5 times around my spark plug boot (as the directions stated, as online research suggested). My idle speed for a small 6.5hp 196cc 4 stroke, is fairly accurate, with the idle specification. When I run the engine "up the ladder" peak rpm seems somewhat delayed/accuracy doesn't come fast enough for my liking. My theory, is maybe try wrapping the 2 fine wires, around the plug wire, and then try wrapping directly around the spark plug. Experimenting, should yield better results, I hope.

Would code 2 work on a 4 stroke 2 cylinder engine, or is that what code 3 is for?

What I mean is..... I think you explained it wrong..... A 2 stroke / 2cycle motor turns one time per one spark of the plug. A 4cycle motor turns 2 times per one spark of the spark plug. I just recieved one of the tachometers , and need to learn how to set it for a single cylinder 2 cycle/ 2stroke motor.

This is a good video however THE METER IS NOT ACCURATE the readings it gives are bullshit i get 90rpms AND THEN it can go up a second or so later to 3000 rpm whatever it is , accurate or not the reading should be approx stable. thats my first requirement secondly, it needs to be accurate I've double checked this on my whipper snipper with my Oscilloscope. this does not read correctly also, when i inject a known stable signal into it , Like 1Khz it doesn't read the correct reading

@@mygiguser That!! at least is encouraging. the one i have is absolutely brand new, purchased a few days ago . ill try what you showed in the video, see if it makes a difference i think the seller was dodgy. the thing is.. i think they sell it thinking that people won't notice I on the other hand have technical instruments to actually check if it works and if it's correct for $13 i don't expect dead on accuracy but i do expect it to be say within 10rpms of accuracy
