Green quartz is sometimes incorrectly called green amethyst, which is a misnomer and not an appropriate name for the material, the proper terminology being prasiolite.[8] Other names for green quartz are vermarine or lime citrine.[citation needed]
Amethyst frequently shows color zoning, with the most intense color typically found at the crystal terminations. One of a gem cutter’s tasks is to make a finished product with even color. Sometimes, only a thin layer of a natural, uncut amethyst is violet colored, or the color is very uneven. The uncut gem may have only a small portion that’s suitable for faceting.[9][10]
The color of amethyst has been demonstrated to result from substitution by irradiation of trivalent iron (Fe3+) for silicon in the structure,[4][11] in the presence of trace elements of large ionic radius,[3] and, to a certain extent, the amethyst color can naturally result from displacement of transition elements even if the iron concentration is low. Natural amethyst is dichroic in reddish violet and bluish violet,[4] but when heated, turns yellow-orange, yellow-brown, or dark brownish and may resemble citrine,[12] but loses its dichroism, unlike genuine citrine. When partially heated, amethyst can result in ametrine.

Based on my experience in using this instrument it must be properly calibrated before use. Turn on for 3 to 5 minutes then turn the volume down so that only one green light is on. When only one green light is steadily on then you can start to use this instrument and get a fairly decent reading. A false reading occurs if you encounter a spot of metallic concentration on the surface of the rock and all the red LEDs will turn on.

Hi, it's quarts. It has a hardness level of 7. Good job. Only white Sapphire will show 9 in this quality if the instrument is correct.

Levels go according to carats of the material being tested. All of those stones should be tested at 1. It says so in the manual. Larger the carats the lower the setting

if you don't understand the machine and you don't understand the property it measures.. all you have are flashing lights... a simple hardness test is the primary identification property for minerals for a field geologist... start at the top with a known diamond... 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness you are looking at silicon carbide... also 10 on the Moh's scale of hardness... ruby and sapphire are 9 topaz is 8... although all the topaz I buy is 10... I think because no one believes in big diamonds that aren't actually worth a bazillion dollars... actually no rock is worth a bazillion dollars y'all... or... maybe no one with a bazillion dollars wants a bazillion dollar rock... or something

supposedly quartz is 7 on the Moh's scale of hardness... I can't find any.. all those really cool crystals don't scratch diamond.. but do... in fact... scratch ruby and sapphire try laser pointers of different colors... a diamond is clear... in various colors... but most respond to all wavelengths of laser light... only carbon does that

I collect minerals all day every day and I have been for a long time

First of all You should have to read the "user manual". If don't have , lost etc. short advice ; When You turn "on" the instrument , must wait when second red light is on ! ( both red are lighting) !!! Set up : turn the set screw or rigt -or left when just only 1 green level indocator glow . Then the Selector ready .... and show correct result !!! Anyway all Your signals false !!!
