Teslarossa Ep9 - Suspension

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's time to put the ultimate suspension setup on the Ferrari Testarossa. Which means it's time for a trip down to Race Shocks in the Welsh valleys to install a semi-active suspension systems from Tractive. This, along with the improved weight distribution should give the Teslarossa the suspension to match the performance of the Tesla motor in the back.
In this episode we talk to expert Simon to explain how a spring and damper work on a cars suspension as well as explaining the benefits of semi-active suspension. We see the new setup go on to the car and at the end put it through it's paces on the local Welsh roads to see the instant difference to the original setup.

A really impressive setup! In terms of the what determines the spring rate of a coil, it is not just the wire diameter, but also the number of active coils (more is softer), and the diameter of the spring (larger is softer). The trick is to have the wire alloy and heat treat so that it can handle the stress of the smaller diameter and few active coils to handle the travel. That is where springs like Hypercoil make the difference. In terms of the challenge, my guess would be 750 lbs.

Is there suspension with this technology on the market to retrofit regular cars, mainly for more comfortable rides on very bumpy roads? Not necessarily super high end race-winning technology, but more budget friendly for comfort? I am really into comfort. Honestly my Poor Man Solution so far has been changing comfort with my tires / lower tire pressure. For example driving with a little less tire pressure in cities with a lot of tramways, cobblestones, etc. I am also thinking about getting smaller rims so i have more rubber. Additionally I hypothesize that some tires ment for heavy SUV's, with extra puncture protection are stiffer overall and lead to less comfort (but I am just a regular person without specialized knowledge).

Richard I've heard another anti-ev doozy, perhaps you could cover it in an episode. I took my RWD Model Y into the tyre shop to fix a slow leak, one of the tyre shop workers was adamant that if they didn't hoist car properly the hoist would sever the high voltage cable and kill someone. I knew that was complete rubbish but had to check the owners manual once I got home to comfirm. Turns out I was correct, and some tyre shop workers are stupid.

Have you given any thought to the idea of linking different suspension settings to the different engine settings, with a manual override. So that in "normal" situations the suspension will automatically change to match the performance of the car?

Ooohhhh. Now that’s a good idea. Linking the motor modes to the suspension settings 👍👍👍 game on 😎👌

@@ElectricClassicCars How about mounting the linked settings to a paddle up/down behind the steering wheel, so no button prodding too!

This is what the super cars do currently. But you will find this system adapts so fast you don’t need to change the settings. It’s already operating within a range of forces so just by driving harder it automatically firms up!

Did you weight the difference between the two systems? Just wondered what the weight saving was from the stock set up. I have a 2016 Model S 85D with the standard suspension. I've tried to get upgraded antiroll bars and an aftermarket suspension upgrade ie Bilstein, Eibach, Unplugged, but there are no options for the earlier Model S. This would be the ultimate upgrade, smart casual for long trips and fast road for when the mood takes you. And if it knocks a few kilos off the weight, thats an added bonus.

Nice, How much weight did the New Suspension Save, IF Any ?, & the Race Car Formally known as "Buffy" could do with some of that Suspension as well, I suspect ..

Needs exhaust tips and a sound system to replicate the V12 sound like the Mustangs and Arbarths have now. Sits well now.

What's the difference between semi-active suspension and full active?

  • @SimonRogers7

Fully active would be changing the ride height and damping depending on road surface/ conditions etc. changing spring rates also. The Early 90’s F1 cars from Lotus and Williams were the closest so far.

I would imagine that the spring rating would be extremely high possibly 1000 ?

One thing doesn't click in my head: the dual active/passive setup at the rear. How come it isn't imbalanced? My intuition tells me that the passive one is as soft as the softest setting on the active one but that's my intuition. How does that work exactly?
