Last night, Tesla's Optimus team dropped a bombshell: Teslabot Generation 2, a COMPLETELY redone robot from the inside out! From an LED light bar around the head, to new hands, to a white (possibly plastic) body, to covered joints, allowing for the bot to be a cobot and work around humans, to a head that actually moves, and more, this Gen 2 Teslabot is truly next level!

The actuators are the real MVPs here, and what impressed me the most were the little details. 11 degrees of freedom in the hands isn't breathtaking, but keep in mind, this bot is not being remotely controlled, and you can see they've made some strides with its auto-balancing. It's really cool to see it move its torso in small ways to rebalance itself just like a human. This will only get better from here. Like, way better. Tesla has the dojo stack (hardware), the data to train its brain (software), and a crazy amount of experience to build all the novel body parts. It's insane to me how close we are to both AGI, and scifi level humanoid robots... Last thing, Elon owns a space exploration company as well. I want these sent to the Moon and Mars this decade. I want Optimus to eventually intersect with neural link as well. It might eventually become the "surrogate body" for disabled people. This is truly the best time to be alive!

The fact that they made a movable head is insane. The FSD running this bot is probably really advanced since it doesn't have a fixed POV anymore. It has to understand how the perspective changes when it moves its head. They said that they have to train every model of Tesla car separately because of the difference in camera perspectives, so this shows that they actually made a huge leap in this department.

Ti would make sense to just use FSD capabilities for labeling stuff that bot sees and something similar to V12 training for actually making the bot learn and do tasks properly and more like a human would.

Considering our only hope to get out of the economic debt spiral our financial system has created is rapid economic growth, right now the bottle neck to rapid economic growth is largely due labor shortage as well as bureaucratic bloat. I'm optimistic that the combination of efficiency gains due to ai software and robotic automation will solve many of societies issues. Of course the major downside to that, with all major technological advances, many peoples jobs and lively hoods will be disrupted and they will need to find new ones. people should be looking at their career and making plans if there isn't a future in it, because you won't stop progress with crying, only slow it down. I think the 11th degree of motion is a thumb rotation, like a clock hand. It would allow to make a pinch with either finger. This would be needed to hold a tool with a pistol grip and use the index finger for the trigger. BTW, the appliance is an electrical steam egg cooker. The next step would be to crack eggs into a pan, maybe add some slices of bacon.😄

Either thumb or index can draw a circle around the tip of the other. Useful for positioning object being held. Losing this then relies on wrist and shoulder which are not good for finer motor skills. The timeline for the consumer release of the Tesla Bot, also known as Optimus, is not precisely defined. Here's what we know based on the latest updates: Release Timeline: Tesla CEO Elon Musk hinted that the Tesla Bot could be available to the public between 2025 and 2027. He mentioned that production units could potentially be in the millions and would be low cost, designed to be "extremely capable". Cost: The Tesla Bot is expected to cost $20,000 or less. However, there are concerns about the cost due to the use of expensive components like Harmonic Drive actuators and roller screws, which are essential for the robot's movement. Current Status: As of the latest updates, there is no official release date set for the robot. Early versions are likely to be tested on vehicle production lines first, with a commercial version expected to be ready for customers in around three to five years. Progress and Development: Tesla has been making progress with the robot, showcasing improved prototypes that can perform useful tasks and are being trained with neural nets end-to-end. The latest versions show more refined mechanics and stable prototypes. In summary, the Tesla Bot is still in development, with a consumer release expected in the next few years, possibly between 2025 and 2027. The cost is anticipated to be $20,000 or less, but this could change depending on the final design and manufacturing process. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's advisable to follow Tesla's official announcements and updates. #I got GPT4 to search several sites and research this for me lol, I'm also super looking forward to it, would be so awesome if it's as soon as 2025!! only a little over a year away! how insane is that?

Folding fitted sheets is easy if you learn how. The trick is to pinch two of the corners and then flip the side section one way or the other way. Then you do the same for the other two corners ino the same flip direction. Finally you meet all corners together and flip to one side again. Then you finish by regular folding.

  • @jwstolk

A fool-proof way to find the correct corners is the tricky part. The laundry folding robot is one of my favorites: kzread.info/dash/bejne/ma1pyZVsg5OtqtI.html Note the video is 13 years old, and still not for sale! (actually, that robot is for sale, but it's very expensive)

John, masterful analysis. A note I've mentioned before: While laundry is a big challenge (how about picking a shirt out of a pile of dry laundry and then putting it on?), a bigger challenge is the sandwich. Even with the ingredients assembled on the counter, assessing the freshness of the bread, meat and lettuce--which would require a sense of smell and also a more delicate sense of touch than is required for picking up an egg--are impossible tasks with merely pressure and sight. You mentioned in a previous episode that smell is easy, but this is most definitely not true.

The "11th degree of freedom" is probably wrist rotation or wrist pivot. An interesting variation of a hand design would be to have two thumbs that could be in opposition to the 3 fingers, or rotate to curl in the same direction as the fingers - something humans can almost but not quite do. A double thumb hand could have improved grip on tools, swiveled to match the fingers could have improved grip on large flat objects like sheets of plywood. Also, being able to use the thumbs as fingers makes for great keyboard abilities! Also, double thumb hands would be ambidextrous, working equally wen on right or left arms, and would not require separate left hand and right hand versions of spare parts.

Rolling on wheels can be smoother, simpler and more efficient than walking - but only when the floor is relatively smooth and level. Therefore, I suspect that future Teslabot variants will include a "wheel only" version for use where all the floors are smooth and level (hospitals, stores, restaurants, some factories), a "walking" version where the ground is irregular and has lots of obstacles (outdoors, construction sites, some factories), and even a "wheeled foot" version for places with mostly smooth floors but sometimes requires stepping over obstacles or dealing with rough irregular floors.

The leaning back would still appear to have the cog behind the appropriate foot contact point and at the very least making it totally vulnerable / unstable another useful improvement will come when they can better disguise the crouched walking technique - offset the exoskeleton from limb 'skeleton' - reposition hip joints?
