Tesla Solid State Battery Would be Game Over for the Industry

Elon Musk is planning to make an announcement on Battery Day next month, where Tesla is likely to unveil an innovation breakthrough with manufacturing and battery technology. Sandy Munro believes this could be a Solid State Battery announcement, since he thinks Tesla already has a million mile battery that may actually already be in use. If there is a Solid State announcement then what would it mean for the future of Tesla as well as competitors?

1 a tab-less battery so the electrons dont have to travel through all the windings. The electrons will now only have to travel the height of the battery generating less heat. 2 a larger battery. 3 a faster continuous manufacturing machinery to produce batteries. 4 a new way to get the lithium and press it together to make the material for the battery. That is 4 of the major announcements. If you have been following this you know these are huge steps. I hope Elon finds a triple efficiency and storage battery and solar panel!

I've been working on a solid state battery for over 17 years and I am sure it is possible. If they can do it, more power to them. I keep running in quality issues and supply problems. Because if you can't manufacture and supply the customer. You're not in business. I don't have Tesla's money but I do know supply chain economics. The idea maybe a zero point mechanical power supply and storage system. I'm still trying, but I believe the world needs this more than I need the glory. So good technology, Tesla. I love your show, but I think you're mistaken about solid state batteries. 1) Maxwell's vacuum less electrode production allowing 10x increase in production. 2) tabless batteries increasing charge rates, reducing heat and allowing for thicker electrodes for density. 3) ultra low electrolyte requirements reducing weight and cost (Hibar) 4) higher voltage electrolytes, increasing net power. 5) cell to pack tech, increases production, decreases weight, improvement in thermal management. IMHO, these will be the main announcements from battery day and combined, will be incredible.

Batteries are compared by looking at specific energy (Wh/kg) and energy density (Wh/L). If you increase the specific energy you can store more energy per 1 kg of battery weight. If you increase energy density you increase the amount of energy stored per liter volume. Solid-state batteries have a solid electrolyte rather than a liquid electrolyte, so its a density increase. By going solid-state alone, assuming no material changes are made, the Wh/kg won't necessarily change, but the Wh/L certainly will. That being said, it's not discussed here what materials Tesla would be using in their solid state batteries, which is more likely the reason they could achieve higher specific energy compared to their existing batteries.

Ideally you would charge have a charge range between 30%~90% for daily usage, then up to 95% for road trips and you will still have regenerative braking from the onset of the trip. For long term storage, maintain the charge % of 40%~50%. Currently it’s roughly 1250 complete charge cycle of the current battery pack. 0% {close enough to 0%} to 100% is a cycle. More times that do the 0~100% cycle charge the quicker you degrade the battery pack lifespan. Million miles per pack life span is: 3,100 complete cycles (15k miles per year then it’s 65 years). 47 charge cycles per year. Once the million mile battery pack will have the option of v2g (vehicle to grid).

I'll go out on a Limb, I think they (do) have the (Scale) Solid State battery in hand. But they will only launch in the Semi Truck as part of the First Texas Factory roll outs. And only in the Semi's slated for Internal and Special Partner testing. Its too hard to keep a secret at Fremont right now, and its easier to build a New battery line in Texas, especially since they stated they were not planning on producing batteries for the Model Y produced in Texas.. that was (very) telling. Texas is also where the majority of Solid State Battery research was occurring, and has the most available sources of the currently known components of a Solid State battery save for some things like "Nickle". Maxwell and Hi-Bar technology will be best integrated in a New production line from the ground up and then be distributed by retro fitting factories later. Battery Day will be the best place to reveal all of this an plans. The Industry as a whole will also be presenting massive losses in Sept and this will throw them a life line.. if (half) the work of EV transitioning will be done for them. I also think it will take Panasonic and LG Chem by total surprise.
